What's the max size of a monitor for use on a regular desk?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have recently moved from a 27" Full HD (1920 x 1080) monitor to a 27" 2K monitor (2560 x 1440), that is a very good compromise IMHO between size and resolution.

The next change will be in 4-5 years and I think that by that time, graphic cards will handle (very?) easily 4K. So I imagine that I will get a 32" 4K monitor.

I guess that 32" is the maximum size for a monitor, for a regular desk usage?

I'm not into home cockpit so I seat on a regular chair with a regular desk. The distance between my eyes and the current 27" monitor is 68 cm (27 inches).

What do you think?

All right Johnny, and what is the distance between your eyes and the surface of your 34" monitor?

I'm also at 34" Acer Predator 34. I'm about 90cm/36" away from the monitor and I don't have any issues.

resolution matters, the higher the resolution, the closer your screen can be and it still look non-pixely... 1080p 27" a meter and a half is great, 1440P 27" is good anywhere over half a meter, 4K, pretty well any size is ok... having a 60" TV a bit over half a meter from your face is a bit ridiculous, so i guess any size within reason...

but then it also depends on how good your eyesight is... some people really like VR as it is now, but its so pixely, it just totally ruins the immersion for me, i'd rather use a regular monitor so I can actually see as good as people not playing with VR, not be intentionally and knowingly keeping myself ignorant for the sake of depth perception and 1-1 head tracking.

I suspect those that only play VR have bad eyesight, compared to me at least, so the giant pixels aren't so giant to them...

using a 39" HDTV, at about 3 feet away. Wished it was larger for those games that I use it for. (using VR/Rift all the time for DCS). No issue for having a large display at that distance for ArmA, and my Win8.1 desktop.

hey its the only bonus to losing your close in vision in middle age.

the blurring is like free MSAA.

so if you are over 40 and on the fence because of your eyes, then its an advantage not a disadvantage :) so jump..

27" here

but meanwhile I think a 4k 16:9 32" would be nice too.

using a 34" 21:9 ultrawide @ 3440 x 1440 , love it

Same here.

Once tried, there's absolutely no going back. Need a decent GPU though to run 3440x1440.

Thanks everybody.

Interesting.

It looks like that with a distance of more or less 27 inches to the screen, a 34" monitor is still usable.

My desk is 80 cm (31 inches) x 160 cm (62 inches).

Actually, getting this Asus 34" 21:9 sync 100Hz screen is on my option list too, with a 1080Ti.

I never thought I would consider it but I changed my mind. More workspace is always good tho I would rather have the same specs 16:9 with standard 4k
