Hmm tough choice, I tried the occulus with an i5 4.4Ghz system + 1080TI

and the performance was terrible

I have a gsync screen so fps dips are not noticed , but oh boy do you notice with the rift

See my sig for specs. Runs fine. Id go for the Rift, hands down.

Problem isnt so much specs atm, its the game not being super optimized for the time being, and Im hoping this changes in the not so distant future.

1.56 ran smooth as silk in VR, 1.57 not so much.

2.05 ran smooth as silk in VR, 2.1 not so much, but has gotten better in the case of NTTR. Normandy is just unplayable still.

- Edit: and Im enjoying flapping around in NTTR atm, with deferred shading.

- Jack of many DCS modules, master of none.

- Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS.

The news said that Occulus will have a 4k VR next year. I'd wait and get the 4k version,... MAYBE.

The maybe cuz of the GPU, you also need a GPU beyond a 1080Ti to fire those 4K goggles I guess.

My personal view with 48 years towards VR is: WAIT, I dont need all those childhood problems that usually comes with new technology. I rather enjoy fps beyond 100fps and call it a day ;)

There is no announcement whatsoever of a new high end PC VR unit from Oculus in 2018. Not even any mention of a CV2 at Oculus Connect this year.

Only thing was the Oculus Go, a low end headset, and Santa Cruz still under development, a self contained wireless headset.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/oculus-connect-4-everything,35667.html

There is no telling how many hours I have in with my Rift now, and continue to enjoy it every day, even with the weaknesses of first gen product. For me the immersion of being in that plane far outweighs the weaknesses.

I have not gamed any at all on my monitor since getting the Rift in Jan.

That is odd, I would think with an announcement such as this by HTC some of the forums I frequent would have been ablaze with that information.

I have never tasted that forbidden fruit LOL

Might well be that once I got those goggles on I am addicted. hell, I am one of those guys too.

So I am holding myself back tasting that fruit until it is fully ripe ;)

Imho, they will all come out with 4k sometime 2018, it just cries for better visual quality, from what you VR users all state. No doubt it is a "beyond" experience ! A forbidden fruit HAHA

Knock-Knock, I tried Normandy last week and this week. The A10C Instant CAS mission was unplayable before, but it's much better. Good enough to play now.

BitMaster, whatever you do, don't try it! :) I KS'ed the Pimax "8K" device. From what I understand 4K one was not quite up to par. No true 6DOF tracking etc. But 8K device (name not withstanding) seems quite promising.

And I agree, Rift is $400 USD with controllers now. It's a no brainer.

In addition to what other said I would add that Rift will bring your DCS experience to a completely new level, whereas a hardware upgrade will just address performance issues. Go for Rift!

What FPS did you get with Rift?

As the problem is that VR requires some fancy combinations to work well. You can have the best hardware out there (like best i7 or i9 as CPU and 1080ti) and still just have a terrible 12-30 FPS for Rift, while in 4K you run easily past 180FPS.

i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S.

i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Not enough FPS sadly, that is why after just over a week I returned it

I have a 3440 x 1400 Gsync screen, and it ran DCS fine, the Gsync hides the frame rate changes very well,

but when using the Rift when the FPS drops it is very noticable.

The resolution just isnt high enough for something so close to your eyes,

a friend warned me before I bought it as he works in software dev and had

tried both rift and vive. He said it wasnt ready yet and I agree with him.

It was very hard to spot anything at distance eg trying to ID ground targets to attack was really hard,

same with spotting aircraft.

I will say though that the 3D effect when flying in a heli low to the ground was great,

so much so that the first hard turn I did I thought I was going to puke (trick is to tilt your head into turns)

I gave it a shot and found it wanting, I am just glad I was able to get a full refund.

Another mate bought one and he hardly ever uses it for DCS

For me there is no going back to a 1440p monitor. I mostly fly choppers in DCS but even so, spotting is critical. In fact I'd say it's more critical given the lack of radar to spot for me. What I've found is spotting in the rift isn't any harder than at 1440p (actually easier since the pixels are bigger), but IDing stuff is very tricky. It's less of an issue in the Ka-50 or gazelle thanks to the targeting cameras, but any time I take out a Vigger or F-5 I'm just shooting at dots with no real idea what it is unless I see it fire or do something else that gives it's type away. But I agree the resolution needs a dramatic improvement. It's just the situational awareness and immersion far outweigh the loss in resolution for me.

As for the original question, hard to say. If we're talking DCS 1.5, then your GPU is almost irrelevant. Flying with the Rift with a 1080 TI and i7-8700k, my GPU almost never exceeds 30% usage. That basically means a GTX 1060 would work just as well since it's the single thread game engine holding the frame rates down at 45 at times (I see 45 near coast, 90 everywhere else).

If looking at NTTR, it's different. I get 90 pretty much everywhere except Vegas itself (at tree top level). Additionally, both the 1080 TI and 8700k are pretty much fully used at the same settings I use in 1.5.

System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.
