upgrade intel i7 4790k to Intel i7-7820X

Depends on your focus. If gaming and only DCS, probably not. The 8086K is just an 8700K with a stock boost to 5Ghz, that'll probably need very decent cooling. With decent cooling you could probably push the 4790 to 4.8. The TIM on the 4790 has probably hardened by now causing higher temps, and could benefit from a delid.

After I did my upgrade from 2500K to 1700x and then to 2700X I tested DCS and discovered it can use 7 full threads. So DCS is already past quad cores in the new engine. A 6 core will indeed yeld more performance however my testing revealed that a graphics card change will impact performance even more than the CPU does. The CPU change from the 2500K to 1700X gave me 14% more average FPS. When I changed from a GTX 970 to a 1080Ti it got me 68% more FPS. Finally when changing the 1700X to the 2700X this gave another 2% average which seems low, but on this time I was measuring the minimums as well and this improved by 16%.

 

This test also revealed that the new AMD chips can keep up with a 1080Ti as it kept locked at 99% load during testing over Nellis (usage of both CPU and GPU will be lower over rural areas).

 

If you have an I7 4790K then you would see a big improvement with a new graphics card but the 1080Ti will probably be bottlenecked by this CPU. In order to take the most out of it you need a faster CPU already. Nothing below an I7 7700K or an I5 8600K, in DCS optimum perfomance will be achieved only by higher core count above 4 cores/ 4 threads, and as ED implements more and more features of Vulkan I can expect going 8 cores could be a good idea then (we are not yet there).

You're seeing windows bump processes around different threads around, and perhaps some of the Nvidia's DX11 driver using more threads. DCS itself is not. You would see something like 40+% CPU utilization if DCS was using 7 full threads. I have a 2700 which is around 15% utilized at best.

Indeed. Water might offer some extras but I, as a an aquarium person with experience in floods and leaks, will never put water inside a computer case.

My CPU bottleneck the GPU ( GTX 1080 Ti ) ??

I think he means are you max performing your 1080ti..?

 

Have you check with MSI afterburner in sim.

 

I was helping someone recently with stutters and it was surprising to see that his 1080ti was not maxing out.

 

Asus Maximus Formula V, i7-2600k, 16gb DDR3 1866mhz, Samsung 840 EVO SSD, Gigabyte GTX 1080TI, HTC VIVE, Windows 7 Ultimate

 

@ 4.5 Ghz

 

This was his 1080TI usage in sim using MSI afterburner. Zig zig = BAD, should be at 100% most of the time.

This is my usage a few patches ago on 2.5, not retested.

 

It would be interesting to see how good the I7 4790K @4,5 GHz is coping to keep the 1080ti well fed.

If money is not a problem, get a proper DIY watercool.de system, they are among the top dogs, if not THE top dog right now when it comes to waterblocks for CPU, GPU and radiators.

 

 

If you opt for air, ther eis only Noctua at the very top, bequiet DR Pro4 is nice too but Noctua still has a lead with the fans and mounting procedure.

 

 

I would get a DIY Loop, I am using mine now the fifth year, still going strong.

It would certainly help, whether enough for you to warrant the cost hard to say really.

 

I have an i7 4820k system at 4.5 GHz, have the funds saved for a new build, and plan on a new 9700k build later in the year. But I game in VR and will take all the "oomph" I can get.

I would wait and see what happens when Vulkan is added before doing anything, your 1080ti will be doing a lot more work I'm thinking...

 

right now w/ DCS Being DirectX11.

 

The Main Benefit of Overclocking is to Process Draw Commands Faster and Feed the GPU Faster and Get Better/Stable FPS.

 

If CPU cannot Process the Commands Smoothly, then you start to have FPS and GPU usage drops.

 

w/ Vulkan, most of the Graphics Commands will go directly to the GPU, so you wont need to Overclock to process commands fluidly.

If we are lucky we might see something by the end of the year. Seeing you have a 1080ti, I would make sure it's maxed out, otherwise your not feeding it enough with your CPU.

 

I went with the 7700K at the time and it's enough to fed a 1080ti at 100% with no zig zag

What does you GPU chart look like when running DCS? Like the pic above?

 

If it looks like the pic above you need a better CPU + overclock for the 1080ti. You will need to decide on the direction to go + what happens with Vulkcan, decisions decisions. Ask BitMaster...LOL;)

 

You could go AMD and do a good cheaper build, depending on what else you play as we might not need such high single core speeds and from what I've seen around here the amd 2700x etc is more than enough to fed the 1080ti. I would like to know if the 1700 is also good enough to match up to a 1080ti, anyone? I would say possibly yes with Vulkcan + once optimized.
