[REPORTED]AB-250 SD-2 "wings" disappear during fall

Recommended Posts

In the last patch or so, SD-2 cluster sub-munitions have stopped falling correctly.

Previously, they were deploying appropriately and falling slowly to the ground (taking a couple of minutes from 4000+ metres altitude, and then landing over the space of a further minute or so).

Now, after the canister opens, the butterfly wings open, but then instantly disappear. The SD-2 bomblets then fall rapidly to the ground, landing in a tight pattern together.

Last tested with DCS Open Beta v2.5.6.49314. Before (correct) and after (incorrect) screenshots attached.

I will add to this as did some testing today track and screens posted.

as you can see in screen shot wings have deployed on one group of bomblets and not on another, but as they fall a very high rate of speed aka wings do not make them FLOAT down they the ones with wings deployed disappear and only the bomblets with no wings deployed hit tgt and cause effects on tgt

This is still not working correctly (after the summer bug-fix push from ED). Also, it is still not marked as REPORTED, so here's a re-test to provide more evidence.

Versions:

  • Date of test: 31 July 2020
  • DCS: Open Beta v 2.5.6.52437
  • Module: FW 190 A-8 EA
  • Map: Normandy

Preparation:

  • New mission, Normandy map, 1x FW 190 A8, air start
  • Run the mission on my own server

My procedure:

  1. Start the mission and stabilise the aircraft flight.
  2. Select the fuze as Wagerecht oV.
  3. Safety catch on the flight stick switched off
  4. Go to external view (F2) and adjust camera
  5. Drop the AB-250 canister.
  6. Immediately go to ordnance view (F6) to watch the dropped canister. It pretty quickly opens to dispense the SD2 bomblets.
  7. Immediately go to ordnance view (F6) to watch the bomblets.
  8. On dispensing, the wings appear, which is correct.
  9. However, they then within a split second disappear (INCORRECT)
  10. The bomblets then fall to the ground at maximum rate, land in a tight group (also not fully correct, but this might be a side effect of the wings disappearing and the then-incorrect fall rate).
  11. The bomblets all explode on impact (INCORRECT)
  12. The bomblets do not make any noise when they explode (INCORRECT)

What should happen is that the bomblet wings remain and the bomblets fall to the ground slowly, dispersing over a wider area. The bomblets should not necessarily explode on impact. Historically timed and disturb-fuzes were used.

Notes:

  • I have seen this incorrect behaviour on other maps (e.g. Caucasus)
  • I note that the incorrect behaviour is independent of what fuze setting is used (Sturz/Wagerecht and mV/oV)
  • I have attached the mission file that I used for the test.
  • I have attached a track file which shows the problem.

I have reported this to the team, thanks

The thing is that this originally worked. When the Anton came out in 2019, these were functioning correctly. The patch in early 2020 (yes, 2020) broke them.

While some things may have never been implemented in the first place (e.g. the F-8 variant), the things that get broken during a patch should be easier to fix right. Assuming the genre has not been abandoned, that is. And while it is not possible to address all bugs, the fact that no bugs are being addressed does not give a good impression, nor does it give the community any confidence for future modules (such as the Mosquito).
