Tarawa - Populate the Deck

Recommended Posts

Is there any way to populate the deck of the Tarawa with other Harriers and Helos?

Static objects simply do not appear, and I could add uncontrolled aircraft, but all the parking spots are on the tram line, which turns the Tarawa into an expensive parking lot with no operational use.

I've also activated start from anywhere, but if I try to place an aircraft like that, it say, please place on level ground

Any tips?

You can place static aircraft and helicopers on Deck. Just ensure the offset fixation is turn on (or they will all be in the middle of the ship) and the link unit matches the ship (or they will move relative to whatever unit have have in that box).

I always name my carriers either Stennis or Tarawa for ease, and I mean the group and unit name

Captain Orso, if you choose a static Harrier and place it on the deck, it will appear there but you will need to check the box for "offset something or other" and then click on the drop down menu that allows you to associate the Harrier with the Tarawa. You can then move it around and place it any way you like. For helos, like the Seahawks or Super Sea Stallion, the blades will be folded as soon as you assign the ship they will be associated with. This system is identical for the carrier.

Thanks guy! Now I feel kind of dumb :( ... but it works so...

Any way to get AI helicopters to start from their actual landing points on the fore deck?

I think ED needs to start treating carriers as completely different from a floating airfield, simply from the fact that far more aircraft should be able to operate from the Tarawa than you could ever fit parking space for them on the deck. They need to be able to cycle from below deck to on deck for flight preparations to take off position. So they need to understand carrier operations.

At the rear of the deck there is enough room to comfortably fit about 5 harriers in parking positions, but LHA's and LHD's can carry up to 8 Harriers, not 5. So you could start a mission with 5 on deck, but 3 would have to cycle through parking spaces freed up from previous Harriers having taken off. With helicopters it's pretty much the same, only their number are far greater.

Then there's the question of, insta-spawn into parking spaces, or move them from under deck. I would love to see the former, but from my experience we'll only see the later.

But the more important question is operations. If you have an MP mission with Harriers and Helicopters operating from the same LHA somebody has to control who gets to use the deck at which time or else chaos will ensue. You can't have helos lined up on the port side taking on Maries while Harriers are trying to take off, or visa versa.

But two years ago the simple 'follow' task was requested multiple times for helos to do CSAR for carriers, and still nothing, while "amateurs" can put something like this together: MOOSE framework - ESCORT class --found this after groveling around for a while, yet to see if I can setup CSAR with it. It really makes me wonder.

Try choosing "Escort" from the Advanced Action Tasks?

At least it works very well for a SEAD flight escorting a Strike package...

You cannot escort ships.

I basically got it to work, by fiddling around with the waypoints until I got the SAR chopper into place, but after a while, although both the chopper and the Tarawa are set to 15 kts, the shopper is moving slightly faster and getting ahead *sigh*.

Also, you cannot get the chopper to land back on a moving carrier, because the landing waypoint is on the starting position of the Tarawa (it doesn't follow the Tarawa), so when the chopper is looking to land, there is no carrier at the landing waypoint to land on :(
