DCS: 1070 vs. 1080 vs. 1080Ti

Recommended Posts

In term of DCS performances relative to graphic cards power my thoughts are :

since DCS 1.2 that I knew, ED always took the right directions in term of performances. When they made 1.5 the calculation load came lighter for the cpu and bigger for the gpu, wich gave a big boost in performances and till DCS 2.0 (the edge version next to 1.5 engine) it was imo absolutely the right choice in terms of exploiting nicely the hardware ressources (cpu and gpu) to get the best performances.

Now since VR came out the rules changed. If you use a 1080p screen with "high end", or at least homogeneous resolution/rig, your ressources are all max exploited (gpu and cpu, about max each), and so max perf are given by your rig. But if you use VR ..... there the balance of DCS engine is broken (probably the same with big number of screens setup) : your gpu bottlenecks the system.

And I think that is why ED is taking the choice to go with vulkan (but I can be very wrong) : in the purpose of re-balancing the resources needs for VR, wich is natively very taxing for gpu.

1 year ago I tested the 2500K VS R7 1700X and then pitted my old GTX 970 VS a new 1080 TI (guess who won) on the AMD CPU. Here's the results:

But because my 1700X bottlenecks the 1080Ti a bit, tomorrow I will be testing DCS with a spanking new Ryzen 2700X. Stay tuned.
