Show me your carrier landings!

Alright now that the absolutely fantastic Hornet is in our hands, let's see those carrier landings! Whatever the weather, whatever the outcome, let's all embarrass ourselves in front of each other

Here are my first attempts, I eventually got a "successful" landing (any one you can walk away from, right? :P )

Now for the excuses: my only training, so to speak, was watching Wags's carrier landing video at the time it came out. I'm a little better now, but only a little :P

I guess I can post my 4th attempt (3rd successful) landing as well

Slight backstory, for some reason this carrier, on the server I was playing on, had decided to just keep going in a circle. So obviously we had to try landing on it :P

Not mine :) This how a real F-18E/F lands.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmGDl5WS0yk

Note the vertical speed on the left DDI in HUD mode at landing. It is less than 800 feet per minute on touch down.

I've tested the DCS Hornet up until 2000 feet per minute, and it survived. Death comes at around 3000.

I did not find an exact limitation for that, but a Hornet landing gear test video:

This one shows a drop from 20 feet, meaning about 2100 feet per minute impact. I would assume, this test shows the absolute limit. Using the usual 1.5 factor common in aviation that should mean that the red line might be around 1400 feet per minute on impact.

If someone has more info on this, please share.

speeds at lower than 150 knots, my hornet gets very nose heavy, i have to add throttle to keep it fliying, how do you achieve 135 knot cruising? flaps, trim?

Ok here’s my first straight in carrier landing. Please bear in mind, I suck. It follows no known procedure, my flying is bloody awful, god knows how I survived. ;)

But should give everyone a good laugh about how bad I am. :helpsmilie:

Oh and for some reason I can’t get GeForce experience to only record main monitor, hence the big black strip which is the 2nd mfd monitor input.

Now for the first attempt at a pattern approach. Same caveats apply as above. I’m useless, it bears no resemblance of a correct pattern, I would be fired if this was RL, and it’s a bloody miracle I survived.

Enjoy

I always land nicely on the deck, but the hook never catches. I've tried landing closer, and closer to the ridge, but not catch. Till the end, I end up blowing at the aft of the carrier. :(

Make sure you have an amber donut (on speed AOA) when you touch down, otherwise the hook won't be at the proper angle to catch a wire.

I tried first attempt at it today, the plane gets stuck to 0kts as soon as main landing gear touches the carrier? Like, all physics stop at the moment of contact, everything still runs (including engine afterburner), but the plane is stuck at a nose high pitch stopped.

Something I turned on accidentally to cause this?

Thanks for posting these ,but why doesn't anybody use the proper patterns? Proper alignment, flying the ball. One more like this and y'all will get chewed out by the skipper and find yourselves flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog sh*t out of Hong Kong! :D

I had two 'bolters' with my first attempts but did it with the third! I was so happy not to crash with my first trys but managed to go around.

I hit the first cable with the third touchdown and made an acceptable landing.

Just Felt like a boss!

But guys I was sweating...

Still I can't imagine to get this done at night and in heavy weather too though!!

Sorry I don't have this on tape but I just wanted to tell this someone because it felt so cool - and my girl is not too deeply impressed :-)

Cheers

My first pass was actually a ramp strike. This was my second pass which was my first “landing”
