5ARTIST5
Does anyone know of a source for metal inserts for knobs like the lighting panel knobs? I am 3d printing them solid and I started making a drill jig for getting the hole in the bottom centered. Next stop is figuring out where to get the metal inserts. Is there somewhere that you guys have had good luck? Also I keep seeing mention of Deadman's knob painting tutorial. Is there a link that I haven't seen to it? I have done a few searches and have not had luck finding the actual tutorial. Thanks!

Deadman
romeokilo has mentioned in his post he has purchased several of my knob from shape ways and been very happy with them . The knobs are made with a shaft and set screw holes printed in. He has not mentioned using anything but a tap and set screws. check out his build here on his thread. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3473297#post3473297 I have sold a few knobs now to different guys and have not had any one let me know the material from shape ways has failed to hold a set screw perhaps RK can give you some advice. BlacleyCole
Yes as long as the knob is threaded and fits well the set screw is to prevent the knob from falling off BlackeyCole 20years usaf XP-11. Deadman
The main thing the set screw is there for, is to keep the knob secured to the shaft so it does not spin . Hi, allow me to come with an alternative idea. 3D print them like this: And let the printer do the hole in the middle, printing them solid takes way too long, and rarely keeps the shape of the knob. This way you have an accual thread to screw the screw into when fatening to the shaft, and its also way cheaper. Regards. Deadman
Very creative idea, nice job https://www.shapeways.com/shops/a-10c-warthog-supplies https://forum.dcs.world/topic/133818-deadmans-cockpit-base-plans/#comment-133824 CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans. LynxDK
Thank you :) It might not be all knobs are wide enough that they can use this, but most of them should. Regards. LynxDK [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Instagram
Deadman
Very hard to tell with out a reference next to the knobs or knowing the size of set screw. there is no way for me to tell. Most knobs on the A-10 are less than an inch or 25.4 mm in diameter so there is not much meat to set a nut in Edited May 17, 2018 by Deadman https://www.shapeways.com/shops/a-10c-warthog-supplies https://forum.dcs.world/topic/133818-deadmans-cockpit-base-plans/#comment-133824 CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans. romeokilo
I use deadmans 3D printed knobs in my pit. His knobs are printed for the real rotarys/pots, I just drill the holes out wider (6.5mm) to suit my cheap ebay rotarys and pots. I use M3 set screws to hold them in place. No metal brackets or nuts, just drill and tap the plastic to M3 thread and the material holds the screws very well. The Shapeways prints are very good quality, and with the frosted material they backlight very well. I have only damaged one, and that was because I threaded the set screw hex head and couldn't remove it. Had to drill it out. Still use it but with an m4 set screw.
