4K Upgrade Path

Recommended Posts

I recently upgraded to a 4K monitor, the result of which is impressive, but also means I am going to have to work out an upgrade path to ensure I can run DCS steady, above 60fps.

The obvious component to upgrade is the GTX-1070. I know so many people repeat the mantra "if you keep waiting for the next card, you will never buy one", but I feel that spending 1080Ti prices at this point in the Pascal lifespan is hard to justify. Would it not be better to wait for a 2080, which should see better performance than a 1080ti for less money?

The other question is the CPU/Mobo/RAM combo - Would it be worth getting a newer Intel processor, DDR4 RAM and a new motherboard to accommodate? I feel like not much has happened in the processor market since the 4790K, especially in single core performance. So my processor still appears appropriate for DCS, with its 4.4ghz boost.

I realise this is an incredibly first-world-problem - should I upgrade from my Ferrari 430 to a 488GTB...? blah blah blah. But yes, my current rig just barely clings on to 60fps, and often dips below, which really is annoying. ;)

If you are going to wait for a 2080 Nvidia card you might also get the benefit of a "fine tuning" of the DCS engine while you wait, which is probably going to bring as much improved performance as a change from 1070 to 1080ti.

I have 4k 1080ti and i am very happy with that combo just waiting for the fine tuning:)

I think the newer chipsets and processor technology does make for a better experience fps wise in 1.5. When I upgraded from 3770K to 6700K over clocked to the same 4.6 I did notice an increase in FPS. Could be a combination of the newer DDR4 chipset and processor instructions. But it's there. I steadily get 60 fps with vsync on, on 5760*1200. It goes higher, but with 60 hz monitors there's no reason to run harder for me

Did you reduced the amount of Antialiasing when you changed to the 4K monitor? ... I dont have a 4K display yet, but I understand that you can halve the amount of AA on 4K and still keep the same image quality as in 1080p

What did you end up going with if you don't mind me asking hughlb?

Before I got my 27" G Syncer, I was looking at the Philips BDM4065UC 40-inch. It was a hard choice, I think for the smooth speed, especially when flying low fast or doing air to air when flicking your head around a lot, nothing will come close to the G Sync @ 144 Hz.

I'm interested at the size you got and how much difference is it, when you set it to 2560 x 1440P, is it a big noticeable difference in sim going to 4K?

My 1070 handles the 1440P well and I like the size of things on my desktop at this rez, if I was to go the 4K, I guess you would need to go fairly big just to read text, like the Philips BDM4065UC and still have 60 Hz and with a decent response time still for simming.

Thanks for your responses guys. In terms of the monitor, its an LG 43UD79-B - 42.5 inch. To my eyes it's the only useful size for 4K. It's PPI is still higher than a 24 1080p monitor, but because it's the size it is, you don't need to do any scaling. That way you get the most out of the real estate. I do run some AA, usually 2x is fine. I'm sure it's not quite as sharp as a 27inch 4K screen, but the size feels almost 1 to 1. It fills your vision a bit like the Rift does. I sit about 4 feet away. 60hz and no gsync is a step back, and the lack of motion blur in DCS is a bit jarring when looking around, but on the plus side, it's easier to drive and the frame rate should be more consistent, if not as high.
