How much CPU power does DCS acualy need?

Recommended Posts

Actually** LOL

I decided to try something, in my bios I can not only down clock but also turn cores off. Out of curiosity I down clocked my 8700k to 4.4ghz, turned off Hyper threading and disabled 2 cores, affectively making it a 4core/4 thread 4.4ghz cpu. Very similar to the specs of the modest 7600k.

The results were interesting, I was mostly holding 45fps flying through downtown Dubi with the HP Reverb. CPU usage was hovering around 50% and gpu usage was around 85%

If anyone would like me to try something else out let me know. :)

Yeah! I believe with A bios update you could upgrade all the way to a 7700K with your MOBO.

Absolutely correct . The board has been satisfactory in every way , but only supports memory to 2400 . And a 7700k costs as much as a 9700k . Between those considerations and no overclocking potential , the plan is to bite the bitter bullet , and get a new motherboard .

Don't think i haven't thought about though ! (I even downloaded the bios update a few months ago)

Thanks !

That is defiantly a consideration, I'm going to look into it but for some reason I want to say the memory speed is cpu dependent and not necessarily what the board originally was speced for but I could be miss remembering.

That's interesting . I got the numbers from the mb manual . I'll have another look and see if i can find anything xmp-related .

2 core test and 3 core test @ 4.4ghz

2 cores ~ =30fps 95% cpu and 65% gpu

3 cores ~ =45fps 65% cpu and 90% gpu

4 cores ~ =45fps 45% cpu and 90% gpu

This makes me think DCS can only efficiently leverage 3 cores. I wonder if it can only utilize 2 for rendering and 1 for loading environment? I have really have no idea just speculating.

Funny , both the website and the manual specify 2133 or 2400 , depending on version , but both say it also supports xmp 2.0 .

You may be on to something here

Still digging

Intel limited the chipset to 2133MHz RAM speed.

You can buy any RAM but they will only run at 2133MHz.

ehhh, did I say that chipset sucks ?

You can still keep the cpu-mobo-ram for a HomeTheatre PC or sell it, but it wont get you far if you try to upgrade it.

Best would be to hop to a AMD Ryzen 3600X/3700X and a B450 board + RAM, that could be the cheapest ticket you can buy to more power

6 cores @ 4.8

4000 c18 ram speeds

frames uncapped

It went up a little, looked like it was averaging about 5fps or ~10% more than in the post above. Looks like the 2080ti was pegged at 100% up from 97%.

Delta59R,

that's telling a lot

What matters even more are the lowest frames. How low does it go ?

I not sure what the 1% lows were, but with the 4 core 2133 setup It dipped down to ~46 and up to ~56. Keep in mind frame rate conditions change rapidly when flying through downtown Dubi..LOL
