AN-2 that old plane thats been sitting on the tarmac since Lock-on?

It's about time it gets an upgrade.

I do believe there's one still flying somewhere south America?

lots of them flying in poland :)

Cuba with some. But they started to use more Mi-8 lately in exchange. Probably they are not in use like before

As for why, simple... Logistics missions.

A lot of people questioned what the Huey would do in DCS and then the CTLD script came along and it became a serious contender for a lot of people. I'd say the same opportunities exist for this aircraft. There are a lot of scenarios where logistics support could be implemented in missions, and these guys already have everything they need to develop the aircraft in DCS.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a C-27, C-123, C-130, C-141, AN-12 but this one could be the one to open the doors for other developers to bring their talents to DCS. For everybody who doesn't like them, can you say you wouldn't like escorting one on a multiplayer server or hunting them down to prevent the capture of an airfield?

Produced till 2001 with more then 18000 made with thousands still flying, what else is there to say... o yeah, this: "If the engine quits in instrument conditions or at night, the pilot should pull the control column full aft (it won't stall) and keep the wings level. The leading-edge slats will snap out at about 64km/h, and when the airplane slows to a forward speed of about 40km/h, the airplane will sink at about a parachute descent rate until the aircraft hits the ground."

-------

All the people keep asking for capabilities to be modelled.... I want the limitations to be modelled.... limitations make for realistic simulation.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a bit you realize the pig likes it.

Why do y'all want a transport biplane in DCS? Serious question, I'm rather surprised to see so much support for an aircraft with very little role.

Because, the An-2 is an unsung hero of combat aviation.

"Very little role" really undersells how vital logistics and transportation are to the ability to prosecute a war. If you haven't the material support to conduct a war, you lose. It's that simple. Without ground forces getting resupplied, your air support is just wasting its time on station. Personally, I think a better question is "Why would you want such a small transport?" and I'd have to simply reply "I like the An-2" as it's impossible to argue that you'd get way more effectiveness out of a Herc or A-400.

DCS would be immeasurably improved if it were to embrace other combat roles outside of the most apparent.

Also, the An-2 was part of the most idiotic and terrible air-to-air engagement in history. And it was glorious.

The year is 1968. It's Operation Rolling Thunder. The VPAF are concerned about a site in Laos called Lime Site 85. The bombing campaign was taking its toll on the North and LS85 is providing guidance for those bombers. The VPAF have AN-2s equipped with rockets and bombs to act as a sneaky strike force to take out this installation.

They're met by Air America UH-1s. One Huey positions itself above a Cold and uses its downwash to slow the An-2 down. Then, using an AKM, the Huey crew was able to kill the AN-2's engine and send it into a flat spin. It smashes into the jungle below.

It's the first air to air kill credited to the CIA.

Q: We've got the Hornet. Why do we need the Falcon?

A: Because we want it! :)

Like the other guy said about the Huey: once it's here, it'll be put to use. Once it's put to use...and so on.

The bigger question is, why wouldn't you want an AN-2? It's an awesome aircraft and it's high time that we get more than just the pointy nose combat aircraft in DCS (don't get me wrong, I love pointy noses).

exactly on blueflag server we have to use tf-51 for logistic etc or helis but in ww2 scenario we are limited to tf-51 the proper trnasport plane would fit perfectly especialy for ww2 scenario.

c-130 would be my pick for modern scenarios :)

The AN-2 is not a WW2 aircraft though ;)

Lots and lots of them airworthy all around the world. So when do we get one?!?!?!?!

Because it`s badass and a legend here...

It's f*n badass EVERYWHERE. And we _do_ need an STOL troops carrier for the DCS bushwar thingy.

The An-2 is going to be one of those airframes. Like the Huey. It will keep on flying. The simplicity of both designs pays dividends in their longevity within the context of their jobs.

While fighters are always trying to go faster and get more sophisticated, working aircraft don't need that level of sophistication. The Annie will fly for a very, very, very long time.

How long it flies depends on the supply of parts. You can probably fabricate everything you need for the airframe but radial engines are getting expensive to support because not many people use them so there's no economies of scale when manufacturing parts. I have no idea if it's a different story for the An-2's engine in the rest of the world though.

Exactly Fishbed. And I'd add the DC-3 to the list as well, a plane that entered service in 1935 and still flies commercially. Now that's longevity for you :)
