Improved VR MFD clarity

Hi Guys,

I'm sure many of you will have seen this MoD:

F/A-18C Cockpit Displays - Readability at High Resolution - V2.5

but the impact on readability in VR is frankly amazing!

the main file that controls this

<DCS>\Mods\aircraft\FA-18C\Cockpit\Scripts\Multipurpose_Display_Group\Common\indicator\MDG_strokesDefs.lua

and the code for that file is modified to this:

stroke_thickness  = 0.9
stroke_fuzziness  = 0.15

-- Currently is used for DMC generated fonts black outline
DMC_outline_thickness = stroke_thickness * 1
DMC_outline_fuzziness = stroke_fuzziness * 1
DMC_stroke_thickness  = 1.5
DMC_stroke_fuzziness  = 0.15

there is a slight "scanline" artefact for me, but the visual clarity is brilliant.

thanks @Rackham!

Wont this mod affect the new "SA" page? When picking up DL signals from other aircraft or interrogating NCCTR.....Doesn't this cause the symbology in the AMPCD to change from yellow to red? Wont this make it impossible to differentiate between friend and foe in reference to own ship AMPCD if the text color is already red?

Not running the beta path, so no way of me telling. That said if you just make the changes to thickness and fuzz it won't have any impact other than what I mentioned

No, this does not affect the SA page like that. It only changes the thickness and burliness of how the objects/text is drawn. It does not affect color or the overall shape.

So not wishing to appear too dumb...but is this only good for the F18? Could these setting work on other aircraft?

YMMV, but if a cockpit for the aircraft has a MDG_strokesDefs.lua file or file containing the same variables then I would guess "yes"

Please post your values. I own a Rift. Thanks

I will try the other settings too

Here are mine

stroke_thickness = 0.7

stroke_fuzziness = 0.4

-- Currently is used for DMC generated fonts black outline

DMC_outline_thickness = stroke_thickness * 3

DMC_outline_fuzziness = stroke_fuzziness * 1.1

DMC_stroke_thickness = 0.58

DMC_stroke_fuzziness = 0.32

I'm going to install this later when I get home but do I need to copy over the materials.lua file as well as the MDG_strokesDefs.lua? Also, what will happen if I don't remove/revert to the old fiels before updating? Will the update fail the validation check?

Thanks

I installed the mod and it changed the font on the Center DDI to red?

I tried this but the hmd is invisible now.

Also the ddi lines are really aliased.

I found that the lines were too thin. I will revert back to my own adjusted values.

yep these are a much better compromise and the HMD works!

Got good results from this, much sharper. Anything like this for other modules, esp Av8-

FC3, F86 Sabre, Mig 21Bis, A10C, C-101, AJS-37 Viggen, F/A18-C Hornet, UH1-H Huey, AV8-N/A Harrier, Mirage 2000c, Spitfire MKix, Me BF109 K-4, Tornado GR4 (one day).

if you can find this file MDG_strokesDefs.lua under the huey or harrier then likely it would work, or similar varibles

Guys...what i am doing wrong?

I tried also this settings but I didn’t have improved readability...worse instead....the ddi lines (and hud and hmd) were really “aliased”.

I reverted back to stock settings and i have to say that in the hud and ddi I don’t have to much difficulty...yes could be better..but the real problem in the hornet is the amcd in hsi and sa page with map activated.

Maybe a solution could be a mod with a black background under the text labels?i am thinking of the a10c map page which is done this way and it is quite readable.

I know it is not realistic...but also not being capable of reading the pages is realistic i think...so this being a simulation some compromises have to be done

There is a mod like that, that increases contrast on ampcd.

Yes i tried almost every possible mod...but also that one is not optimal....

For example in night or low light conditions the amocd become worse...

What would really help is something like the a10...watch this picture
