I am not arguing this for my sake.

No need to continue doing so.

Your point has been well made.

I am sure that all are aware that there are circumstances where some consumers will be unable to verify the software due to having no internet nor access to a cellular device nor access to a landline for the purposes of making a telephone call.

The developers can now take said point in consideration when making their final decision.

I just hope that nothing untoward befalls them during that time. If they further, after not having access to a landline, internet or cellular phone, don't have access to a Sat phone as well then they will be in real trouble indeed.

4 times per year, to be exact. However, I will point out that it won't directly affect me since I don't play DCS that often. I am not arguing this for my sake.

If that is the case then it's not helpful that you post, we need real data from people that this will directly be effected. I dont come on here to argue for my health, I am trying to get info that would help change something, if it's needed.

As an example, a person on Hoggit suggested a week would work better for him during deployments, that was good feedback and something I can take to ED.

Let others speak for themselves, they dont need you to speak for them.

The people most effected by this, are most likely offline right as I type this

Then when they return to civilisation or area with net connectivity and update

they will have a very very bad surprise

If you have real issues that effect you on this please post the examples. We dont need people defending people they think might be effected. Please help me help you, if you have real data, give it to me. Otherwise it just turns into white noise...

In my opinion this is a huge step forward. Awesome!

I honestly feared that I will once loose all my modules due to too many hardware updates or other problems that forced a re-activation.

In fact the re-activation counter for two of my modules are almost gone.

I also don't quite get the problem some have with the 3-day period. It's not that one needs to call ED for re-activation once offline for a week.

It's automated, the game just doesn't let you play if you where offline too long but as soon as you go online you can continue.

Many other games even require a 100% connection to the internet (with no interrupts) for their singleplayer. DCS even let's you play for 3 offline-days.

One could argue that 3-days are too less (maybe a week would be better) but it's rather a minor problem I would say.

The system itself works like a charm, thanks ED its a lot better than the current system.

Now we've cleared that up, I'd like to discuss the effectiveness of the DRM itself.

Yesterday, you said it was to prevent people sharing modules. This can easily be bypassed in a multitude of ways. You didn't provide me with any further answers. What else is this DRM for?

Very disappointed with this new copy protection system. 4 days max between validated online checks is a ridiculously short period of time.

I used to have a bad ISP with regular service interruptions and this DRM system would have sometimes stopped me from playing DCS. My current ISP is better but there's no predicting the future and when/where I move next. I also know players with jobs that entail long periods of time away from reliable internet access (military and merchant marine) and they would be affected by this. Granted, that may be a few percents of ED's customer base, but I don't like seeing them thrown under the bus.

Regardless of individual circumstances, this system will also make modules unplayable if/when ED's authentication servers become inaccessible.

StarForce is bad but this is not good either. I'm hoping ED will reconsider the details of this system and at the very least greatly extend the allowed period of time between online checks (frankly, this should be months, not days). Having the game phone home every 4 days to allow solo/offline play seems ham-handed.

Thank you for reading.

While it varies from year to year, I return to Scotland about 4 or 5 times per year usually for a week to 10 days at a time, however it has been more, one year it was 13 times I was back and forth, and one time when I was back for 3 months, they are the outliers.

Common sense.

That doesn't answer my question. Preventing simultaneous login is an obvious measure, but collecting IPs is flawed because people log in from many different locations. Obviously, I suspect ED would rather avoid falsely accusing customers of account sharing simply because they travel.

Edit: Oh, and don't forget VPNs.

I'm someone who falls into this category, but I didn't see anything about a phone call. I can not get a computer online but I can make a call on a sat phone. Are you saying if I can do that I can call ED be told input key "xyz" and have my modules unlocked without going online? Because that would solve my particular issue.

Maybe ED could run a 24/7 phone support line to help customers out in this situation ?

a lot of people effected by this DRM change might not be about

If it had happened last month then I would not have seen this as I was away back home without internet.

Oh, and where I used to live in the remote Highlands, mains electricity was not guaranteed, but at least I had 2 generators in the garage for when it went out, which it did regularly.

I'm really surprised how many people seem to be playing DCS day in day out without internet connection for days.

I mean you probably also can't play other modern games, most require a 100% connection to the internet (even singleplayer).

Zabuza, it's not day in day out. It's periodic long periods of time spent away from civilization. Which also comes with a lot of boring down time where its nice to have games to pass the time. One trip I used DCS but that's the only one I've done since getting into DCS. It's also been fallout 4, the stalker series, and sim city 4. Halfway through one trip my offline mode for steam stopped working. Three hours a day spent flying, 21 spent sleeping, drinking, staring at the ocean/jungle.

No I am not saying that because I have zero knowledge of the proposed DRM system - I am merely inferring from the facts provided.

What is important is that this constructive discussion has highlighted a possible solution. Whether it is a feasible solution will depend on the Developers and/or the relevant DRM software utilized.

We will just have to be patient and await further details as and when they are released.

I'll ask about this as well, perhaps a support ticket before you went on your trip could suspend the check for a certain period of time.

Yeah, I get that. And the system might need some tweaking. (For example extending the period).

However in my opinion it's really better than the current. I could also imagine that the people affected by disadvantages of the old system are more than the ones affected by this system (however I can only guess).

I had updated my hardware 5 times (a new CPU, a week later new graphics, and so on) and had some activation issues with a module that required re-activation. It's down to 1 activation, another is down to 2 and I really was afraid that I would need to re-buy the modules once.
