New machine, SLI, dreaming?

Recommended Posts

All the parts arrived. 2x EVGA 1080ti's, 32GB Ripjaw, EVGA 1200watt Super Nova Platinum,

256GB M2 Drive, 2x 512GB SSD's, 2TB WD Black Hard Drive, Light-ON DVD writer, Asus Rog Maximus X Hero Z-370, Intel I-7 8700K, EVGA 280 Water-Cooler, Full tower Coolmaster Trooper, Artic Silver, extra fans, card reader. A tad over $3500.00 :music_whistling:

I will start the build tomorrow. Win-10

Was I dreaming....didn't I read that 2.5 will be released within two weeks? :book:

I wanted to get the EVGA Classified but they have not released it.....I took the two evga 1080's out of the new/older computer and put them in the closet. I have a Corsair water cooler in that machine and was scared it would leak like the other machine did.....and all over my two brand new 780's. A friend sold me two older Titans to replace the 780's...gotta fire that machine up soon. It has a I-7 3770, 32GB, 120GB ssd, 2 2TB black drives. Couple of generations old, but new.

Every machine I have built in the last 15 years have been duel GPU's. I am also going to fire up my old 3-d machine again....I am sure it won't compare to the Oculus.

I am not going to load DCS on the new machine until 2.5 is released.

Nice one lazduc:thumbup:

Can I ask why you always go for duel GPU's....? Do you have many other games other than sim's that can utilize both of these? Most of the things I do (Sims) only benefit from one good GPU, so Ive never really thought about SLIng.

I didn't even bother with a CD drive in my new PC, I do have one in my old PC if needed, just haven't needed it so far, so left it out.

Love my hero IX, she went straight to 5Ghz just using the H100i AIO, will grab a 1080ti soon I'm thinking. I'll wait for DCS 2.5 and see how it runs, then upgrade.

We’ve put a massive amount of work into this effort and it is almost complete. We plan to release DCS World 2.5 in the coming weeks!

What a massive investment. I doubt the benefit of the dual GPU. Onwards i am very curious about the effects on dcs 2.5. Good luck buddy! :D

Gotta take my standard poodle to the parlor for a hair cut...then home to start the build. I will take a few photos if you are interested.

I have programs that take advantage of duel gpu's. Back in the day before sli it was called

3DFX. I have one system with one 3dfx card that has 2 gpu's. I have another system with 2 cards both 3dfx connected by flat ribbon cable. In addition too these I have a monster with 2 cards with 2 gpu's each, 4 gpu's total. These machines are over 10 years old. If you are interested I will take some photos of these older machines.

"mine ethereum or btc if sli sux". Naw, not worth it. LOL. I have Cad programs and electrical/mechanical simulation programs that love sli. I have a few programs that are on DVD's.

Correct, DCS will not take advantage of sli. Despite what ED said several years ago, they did not go forward on sli. Many reasons why sli fell out of favor. Cost, added coding support, small market share, less programs that will utilize sli.....its only benefit is if you have the software that will take advantage of it.

Massive investment....I will bet most here have that much and much more invested in this hobby.....and probably have a lot more invested in other hobbies. Sometime if you are brave enough, add up all you have spent on this hobby....lol. Dont tell the wife.

Look at the list of the games that support SLI.It's a very short list. Is it really worth it? My motherboard is SLI enabled, i don't even bother.

GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 ATX Intel Motherboard

the ONLY reason these days to use SLI is if you have more money then common sense and want to be able to say i have SLI, generally it's more trouble then worth and the list of games that support it any more are few and shrinking. while it may doubble FPS it often introduces a micro stutter at least was my expierence

I am half way through the build. Ran into a couple of very minor problems. The heads of the screws I used to mount the radiator do not allow the dust panel to insert correctly. And I just ordered a USB 9P 9Pin Header Splitter to make up for the 2 usb-2 sockets on the motherboard.

This gives me 4 additional headers. I have installed a card reader, the front panel controls and the usb control for my waterpump. It coming from China....2 weeks. I will finish up and not use the card reader till the splitter arrives. I mounted a sound card. Dont know if I will keep it. Lots of wires to make pretty. I really like this case. Cool Master Trooper.

I will post a couple of photos. Yes I will sli my 1080ti's. Not for gaming. I have several cad programs that utilize dual gpu's. There are very few current games that support sli and VR-SLI at this time only has one title and it is by Nvidia.

NZXT has a nice internal USB20 splitter, 2 x USB-A and 4 USB PinhHeaders ( 1 for hookup to board, 3 for you ).

Thanks, Bitmaster. Just ordered. Finished the build sort-of...waiting for the splitter. Perhaps you can give me a little advice. ( Not about SLI..lol) I want to load Win 10 onto my M-2 drive.

Should I disconnect all the drives except the M-2. After first boot go into bios and select my usb drive as first boot? I assume after first boot I can go to bios first, then change the drive settings. Should I select the M-2 drive as second boot...and the system should go to the usb drive first....load win 10 and during the loading....it will give me the opportunity to select the M-2 drive to finally configure the M-2 as the boot drive and load Win 10 onto the M-2.?

I have read somewhere that it is not possible to get a M-2 drive to be the boot device...??

I am also a little worried about first boot and having the auto voltages set these voltages to high?

I will post photos of some of my systems...and thanks.

Ehh, with a modern board and Win10 you can boot right off the NVMe, no special settings needed.

With F8 you can force the Boot-Menue to show up, so I would use that option to select the DVD or USB to install the OS but select the NVMe in Bios as 1st boot device.

Mine for example is:

1: Win10

2: Linux Mint on USB20-2GB ( better to check OC, if it fails, it wont crash my Win10 )<--> inserted inside the case into NZXT hub, always inserted, as well as a 64MB stick for Bios files and OC profiles

3:DVD ( if all fails )

As long as you can keep the drives apart when you format the OS drive, you can leave them connected. If you have doubts to be able to distinguish them, leave them better disconnected for the install. Not a bad idea and I do this too for some installations. Simple is always better and what isn't connected cant be formatted :smartass:
