Anyone planning on getting the 3090 for VR?

Of course considering the 3090.

So far we dont know the real spec or the real performance gain (for, in my case 2080ti).

Probably a complete package, if I get the Pimax 8KX(still need more info about that), then I might need the 3090.

Considering the increased memory bandwitdh and the improved texture compression on the gpu, I expect the VRAM on the 10gb 3080 to perform closer to a 15-20GB variant.

This is a new type of Vram so shouldn't be as pricy as that found on 20 series, but I certainly won't bet that the 3090 will have an MSRP lower than $1400, too rich for my blood counting for the 25% vat.

As for DCS.

Faster cpu's, aren't going to happen, that game is over and done.

Future for cpu is multithreading, and asynchronous processing.

The problem is DCS doesn't make use of it.

Eagle Dynamics is simply going to have to solve that, and Vulkan is a major current priority in house, per claims.

It's simply put, they either get current on their software side, or DCS and Eagle Dynamics as a studio will be done for.

I think my cpu will be a bottleneck. I’ve an i7 6700k, running at 4ghz with 32gb DDR 2400mhz. I believe I do have an 850watt psu, but it is a pretty cheap one. A full system upgrade is long overdue.

I’ve been ready to pounce for ages, but the manufacturers seem to be dragging their heels forever. AMD, with the Big Navi, and new Ryzen, and nVidia with their 30xx series. I, and many others, have been reluctant to bite now with all of this stuff ready to drop at any moment.

You can OC your 6700k to 4.6 easily. Then you're only about 400 Mhz away from the single core performance of a top of the line Intel CPU considering IPC hasn't really increased since Skylake. I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade from my 6700k for that reason.

1. I am currently running a GTX 1080, not even a Ti.

2. I have pre-ordered a reverb G2.

3. I keep getting plenty of overtime.

So, a 3090 is on the table.

I am also long overdue for a new PC, but I may have to wait another year for that due to other circumstances. But overtime may fix that, too.

i wait until dcs comes with optimizations. I will not invest a cent more at the moment..I'd rather donate my money to eagle dynamics than to a new graphics card ;))

I've heard in the neighborhood of $1400 for the 3090 with 24gig of VRAM. Yeouch!! I will not be buying that anytime soon. Happy with my 2080ti for the moment.

That would be a steal considering a 2080ti with just meh 11GB still is 1300 today. I'd be expecting the 3080ti 12G somewhere around that. If we'd really be getting a 3090 with 24G for that, I'd literally just go for that one right away. But well, first I'll replace all the other things in a go probably in March. Somewhere around a 9700k or similar 10th gen, 64GB 3200, 970 m.2 drive(s) and keep the 1080 8G, then put in a 30 series about a year later. I'll just have to see where I'd put the G2 in there as well...

And just as a side note, the real question then is "but will it run the other sim's menu?" rdlaugh.png

I’m not very au fait with the dark art of overclocking. Plus, I’m pretty sure I would need to reconsider my cooling options at 4.6ghz. Probably starting with a new case. Nah, I’ll just upgrade the whole kaboodle, and give my current system to my son. Thanks for the advice though :)

with that in mind, you might want to consider if buying a K sku processor and OC capable motherboard makes sense if you are just going to leave it at stock speeds ... you are quite literally leaving money on the table...

I know. I realise that my pc has more to offer than I am able to get out of it. But I do get a certain degree of comfort running things at stock, knowing that nothing is, in theory, getting over-stressed. I may make a concerted effort, sometime in the future, to try and get a handle on overclocking. But, at the ripe old age of 57, whether it will sink in is another matter entirely ;)

There are some pretty simple guides which you can follow on DerBauer's you tube channel

which might help, i get the comfort of headroom, but you functionally get that on an non OC'able SKU as well ...

on a modern motherboard, in most cases your worst case scenario is a BIOS/UEFI reset ...

My personal take on this is that I prefer minimal overclocking to the overwhelming sound of all my fans going mad! I personally have not always seen the point of stressing out the hardware just for the sake of a handful percentage point improvements in benchmarking.

But, as always, each to his own.

I just use the Intel Performance Maximiser tool, which painlessly sets the CPU.

I just can't stand the sound of fans stressed to the max. I feel sorry for them!

I go full bore on overclock and fan speeds.

When I am gaming in VR, I am fully immersed including sounds as I use earbuds, so the outside sounds are pretty much isolated for the most part,

$699 for the 3080... $499 for the 3070 but Jensen didn't announce the price for the 3090, other than 24GB's RAM...

I think they are actually skipping the TI variant entirely, making the Titan variant more mainstream.

The RTX Titan has an MSRP of $2499.

The 3090 getting a full 1k drop off from that, with the new more efficient memory, is making it much more available.

As for do we need it?

Honestly I don't think so, even the 3070 is a full fledged enthusiast card, and the 80 is very much "highend".

Just because something bigger does exist doesn't mean you have to buy it.

But I'm probably going to have to be sensible and if at all, fingers crossed might aim towards the 80 as an upgrade to my 1080ti, which I bought in 2017 for $800.
