Mig-29 updated cockpit looks weird

Recommended Posts

New vs old. Clearly the AO is missing, and thats on all of them.

I was using XnView, with Nvidia DDS plugin to view/save. Couldnt view the normal maps, probably due to the DDS plugin being to old or something, and maybe why yours look all distorted, WatermanPC.

Immediately noticed a strange round bar floating in the cockpit... and it stays there when shutting the canopy. But my biggest gripe is the lack of 6DOF. Even though it's mapped in the controls and reacts on "axis tune", my head is glued in the center position and I just can pan the view around and roll it as well. No lateral movements though.

I am not seeing the movement issues, are you talking about TrackIR?

Also I cannot replicate the floating object you are seeing. Are you seeing it in all variants?

Both TIR and keyboard keys. As others don't have these issues, I'm gonna check my view.lua file. There's most probably something bad in there from the old days that now overrides some vital configs.

As a side note, shouldn't the grip be rotated to the left? I had hoped this would have been addressed in today's update as well.

Yeah, there is not AO layer over the diffuse textures (thats the difference with the old textures)...however I think that the real issue is that there is no AO in the roughmets as, since the PBR update, the AO info should be there instead of the diffuse textures so it "somewhat" behaves almost like a real time AO solution...maybe thats what they are trying to do if its still wip, clean diffuse textures and then store AO info in the red channel of the roughmets maps where it should be...

Also hope they add more detail to both diffuse and material as now they look really poor and simple.

this talk about cockpit textures..

has PBR been added to the mig29?

Yes

It looks no different to lots of other cockpits since DS to me. Some are better and some like the F-5E and K4 are worse. Lacking in depth, sublety and contrast in certain light conditions.

I personally am not a fan of fake shadows and refelctions...it may look great but has a feeling like a matte painting. It is OK in the screenshots but once there is movement seing those shadows and refelctions being static kills it for me

+100

Case in point....:)

Alternative cockpit textures for use with the updated 29 pit

http://www.mediafire.com/file/dsqh010jsycgd96/2.5.3_MiG-29_pit.rar/file

extract and copy 'Fixed' folder to Mods\aircraft\Flaming Cliffs\Liveries\Cockpit_MiG-29S directory then select the pit through the 'special' page in options.

Thanks a lot Mustang, it works very well and at the same time the new bump maps are working so it looks better than before.

There is a fix coming for the cockpit, I am not sure what it is supposed to fix, but will post when I know more.

I guess the fix is adding occlusion info in the textures/roughmets which is not present right now.

Me neither, even less now that we have the PBR implementation, thats why I said the best solution is not adding AO over the diffuse textures but the roughmets red channel...that way AO will only apear when in the shadows. Anyway, AO has nothing to do with fake reflections which should be removed completely of course...an example of this is the black leather? thing under the hud (sorry dont know its name) which previously had pre-rendered reflectios but as you can see they have been completely removed in the new textures...the problem now is the thing lacks a lot of detail in the texture (it has a pure color) but other than that it looks good and has nothing pre-rendered on it.

F-5 cockpit looks clearer because of the own nature of it...the canopy frame is very clear and clean so the light bounces happily on it and make looks whiter...not the case of the mig-29 and its "filled" frame.

Am I the only one dying to click those switches and buttons?

Not at all. A full-fidelity MiG-29 is higher on my personal DCS wishlist than say an F-16.

In fact, only Heatblur's F-14 is more exciting to me than a DCS: MiG-29.
