34 inch 21:9 monitor resolution

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm thinking of getting a 34 inch 21:9 ratio ultrawide monitor. My computer has a 4.0GHz chip, 16Gb Ram , a ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1050 Ti OC graphics card and a 22 inch 16:10 monitor which runs nice and smooth.

I have a few questions:

1. If i got a 34 inch 21:9 monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080, will it look ok pixel

wise?

Some say a 34 inch 21:9 screen is too large for such a resolution, that its too low and so

you can see the individual pixels.

Others say it looks good. What sort of picture quality does it produce? Is it really that bad?

2. If i got a 34 inch 21:9 monitor with a native resolution of 3440x1440, could I then run DCS

World at 2560x1080 (or thereabouts)?

I think my gtx 1050ti oc would struggle with 3440x1440 res.

Ideally I would like to buy a 3440x1440 for future proofing.

I could then get a graphics card sometime in the future that would handle that resolution.

3. In general, does it matter about monitor size when it comes to DCS World because I read

somewhere that DCS World is more concerned with viewports rather than actual

monitor size?

This led me to ask question 2 about running the game at 2560x1080 on a 3440x1440

monitor. Is this feasable, workable option?

4. Or should I just get a 2560x1080 res monitor and be happy with that?

Regards,

Milli

If you want ultrawide than dont go for 2560x1080. 34" will make it too pixely, I saw one of such monitors in store and while in most of the stuff its ok, some games look bad.

I have AOC AG352UCG which is a 3440x1440p 35" UW monitor and to power that thing in DCS even 1080Ti struggles at high settings.

My specs are as follows:

Asus 1080TI Strix OC@2 Ghz

Core i7 2600k OC@4.8 Ghz

24 GB RAM at 1600 Mhz

I play at high settings with MSAA at x4, AF at 16. Some effects are turned off such as lens, flare, heat blur, shadows are flat only. That gives me roughly 50 to 80 FPS, depending on a situation and environment in 2.1. Unfortunately this version of a game requires a lot of optimization, hopefully it will arrive eventually.

I can tell you that 1050Ti just wont do. Better wait, collect more money and buy a better GPU (or even a completely new rig if need be).

Thanks for the info Hiromachi. I will go to a shop and have a look at what a 2560x1080 looks like on a 34". Some say games look ok but general usage looks pixelated. 1080 was the new standard not too long ago for tv's etc, so maybe they're not so bad.

1080 might be satisfactory for the movies, though this days you see a lot more 4k TVs with superior to monitor ones panels. Some even consider buying a 40" TV due to image quality.

Go for 3440x1440, as you say you can always upgrade your GFX card later on. I had a 27" monitor at 1920x1080 and was never completely happy with the clarity, it always seemed a bit too blocky; my 34" ultrawide is roughly the same physical height but looks so much clearer being 1440 in the vertical.

Personally even 3440x1440p is not razor sharp, I had 27" 4k and that was something I really enjoyed in terms of picture quality. I'm looking forward to something like 38" 5,120 x 2,160p LED, with 100hz refresh and freesync/g-sync. Of course no hardware is capable of running it at this point, I'm not even sure there are connectors providing bandwidth for such amount of pixels.

But one can always dream :)

I have a 3440 x 1440 screen with a 1080TI

It was a massive step up from 1920 x 1200 ...... but it has GSYNC

which makes a big difference if the frame rate takes a dump

You can, but it wont look well. If you moved from 1920x1080 to 4k and wished to lower resolution on 4k panel it would look ok, but stepping down from 1440p to 1080p doesnt really look well.

Oh well. Decisions decisions. Thanks for the replies.

My tip would be to wait. This generation of ultrawide panels is all based on AUO panels which have some significant quality issues and next year there will be arriving ultrawide panels with higher refresh rate as well as built in HDR function, so there really is no reason to rush.

Better wait and raise money to buy monitor and gpu at once.

You can but it will look blurry due to the monitor upscaling to fit the screen. You could always disable monitor scaling which would mean that the 2560x1080 output would sit in the middle of the screen, surrounded by a black border.

Firstly pick the best monitor that you can as chances are you won't be buying a new one in at least 5 years as the monitor is the one PC peripheral that most people hold onto the longest. You can always sacrifice some lower FPS now and into the short term to keep that excellent image quality balance of a 1440p ultrawide display. I always stick to the monitors native resolution, after all that is what you paid for. As GPU performance advances then you can move to a newer more powerful card. Over my many years of PC gaming I have found that in the lifespan of my display I would have used at least three different graphics card, each one more powerful and higher performing.

  • 1 year later...
GTX 1080 ti works fine with a 3440x1440 as long as the other PC specs are up to scratch etc.

You know the last post was over a year ago, right?
