VR with the 2080Ti

Recommended Posts

Morning,

I finally got everything buttoned together on my computer with the 2080Ti any had my first real experience with the Rift. Immersive and initially disorienting but great.

I used the VR preset in the menu but turned up the resolution in the cockpit to 1024. After loading up a quick mission on the runway, I found myself initially at around 25fps with some tearing. Disappointing at first but about 5 minutes in under the same start conditions (maybe minutes a little AI), the fps held a solid 45 fps.

Any ideas why that would happen?

Anyone curious, on my old 1080p monitor I was getting a steady 140+ frames on full settings on the A10 around Vegas.

I get these frames on a 1080 with high settings and 2xAA. Doesn't sound like the 2080ti is doing much. My 1080ti is definitely faster in VR than my 1080 is but I prefer using it in my other PC that I use for most of my games since the VR rig is a dedicated simming rig. Seems to me you should be seeing a solid 60fps in most places with high settings and 2xAA with that card because I get a pretty solid 45fps with those settings on my 1080ti when I have tested it.

Did you change the Nvidia control panel settings?

Have a look in MSI afterburner at usage of your GPU.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s well under utilised. Chances are that your PC is still being bottlenecked by the CPU as the core DCS engine is running single core.

On a positive note, Vulkan will hopefully offload some workload and give your CPU some free resources.

I’m hoping for Vulkan before the end of this year

that’s great news.

it’s going to be a very good Christmas.

Indeed.

Have begun gathering parts for a complete new build which hopefully will be done before then.

Note my wording of “hope”. Might be so complex that it could be 2019.

You should check Steam VR settings as it likes to default to supersampling that it thinks your rig should be able to handle (way more than you want generally) and set that to 1.0, disable MSAA in game and raise your pixel density in game for your supersampling needs.

On my odyssey I'm able to hit a P.D of 1.5 on my 980Ti and maintain 45 fps over Cacausus. Persian Gulf not so fps friendly, but I'm waiting for gpu availability to take care of that.

Spoiler

Win 11 Pro, z790 i9 13900k, RTX 4090 , 64GB DDR 6400GB, OS and DCS are on separate pci-e 4.0 drives

Turn off MSAA if you have it on.

This will give you an fps improvement, the downside is that the visuals then look like sh1t.

Turning it off lets you turn up the pixel density further tho. *shrug* its all trade offs.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've found that with my 2080ti that SteamVR automatically sets your Video Resolution to 200%, which has a huge impact FPS wise on DCS. Note that I didn't say image quality, which seems unchanged. So, I've dropped it down to 100% and getting about a 25% increase in frame rate. With my rig (i7 8700 at 4.8 ) the best settings for image quality to FPS are below. With these settings I'm no lower than 45 fps, usually around 48-50. Hope this helps.

SteamVR

Video Res manually set to 100%:

DCS

Options preset: VR

Textures: High

MSAA: 2x

PD: 2.0

Windows 10 32gig I7 1080 Ti 11 Gig overclocked

4k monitor, Nvidia DSR on 4K, 1080 Ti overclocked, DCS high = 150 fps +

VR htc vive DCS high or low for VR, 1.0 IPD or 1.8 IPD, steam 20% super sampleing or 200% super sampling - all the same = 45 fps.

Others are claiming to get much better, but I don't know how they would do it.

Nobody's breaking 45fps in VR right now. 1080Ti or higher just means you can do so with higher settings.
