F18 Hornet Campaign, Persian Gulf

Recommended Posts

Good Evening,

I have just finished the 1989 campaign with the Hornet and I was wondering if there’s any supercarrier campaigns set in the Persian Gulf with the F18? I had a look on the campaigns menu on the DCS website and I couldn’t see any. Most of the campaigns are for Nevada. Thank you

Are they easy to download and install from user files. I only have a basic knowledge when it comes to computers? Is there any tutorials or step by step guides ? Thanks

Check out this thread: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=281351

Also you're in the right place on this sub-forum. Several very good dynamic missions on this sub-forum. To name two that include the SC:

  1. Liberation Campaign (make sure to check out this one!) (
    )
  2. Any of the "Through the inferno" missions (this one in Persian Gulf)

As long as you can read the few instructions they do have, installation really ain't complicated at all and no knowledge of computers is needed :)

System specs:

Yup! totally agree with sirrah! Liberation is absolutely worth looking at. Make sure you read the docs as well, since this one works/behaves a little different from others.

But if you want a plain scripted one, like the ones you buy/included in the modules, then this one includes the SC in the Persian Gulf.

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3309923/

Since you claim you're computer illiterate. :) I'll explain how to install it, to get you going. Most other campaigns works the same way, except for the dynamic DCE campaigns, they are also nice!

From link above. Download the file, OER_pt1-v2.0_SC.zip. It will probably open in Windows Explorer, and inside is another folder "OER_pt1-v2.0_SC". All you have to do is copy that folder.

If you want it to appear under the F/A-18C when you click Campaigns like this:

2020-07-28_20-04-01.thumb.png.e5e123dfabe69cc8a44ac3d22bd96f05.png

Copy to:

Drive:\path\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Mods\aircraft\FA-18C\Missions\Campaigns\

Where drive and path might be C:\Program Files\ if you just installed DCS with default settings. You might even have Steam version. Change accordingly!

BEWARE!!! If you update DCS, you might need to copy it back in. Not always!

If you want it to appear under the "My Campaigns" when you click Campaigns like this:

2020-07-28_20-04-14.thumb.png.6e1869196e344f6f5dc444a36e1bab29.png

Copy to drive:\Users"your user"\Saved Games\DCS\Missions\Campaigns\EN

And/Or

Copy to drive:\Users"your user"\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Missions\Campaigns\EN

Make folders if any are missing. Items in the "Saved Games" folders are not affected by updates and cleanups. But I would recommend to get one of the mod managers. I have startet to use the new one Open Mod Manager.

Hope this is constructive and helpful!

Yeah, do that! Those scripted story driven campaigns can be a lot of fun and a different experience as well.

I don't know your mileage on DCS, but if/when you're going to add mods, make sure to check out that mods manager, or the old OvGME. OvGME is simpler, but abandoned with no more development, so I would just head directly to the new one if I were you.

Cheers!

Thank you. What Mod Manager would you recommend I use? I had a quick look on user files and I can see mod manager ModManFX 64 Bits 1.0.1.2 - Mod Manager. But having a quick look at the installation process and it looks really confusing.

You mean whether 32 or 64 bit? Always go for 64bit when available.

The installation is pretty straight forward, but if you mean the setup process, yes, that one is somewhat intimidating, and lack of documentation.

But install it, and make a post in the thread, and I'll help you!

:)Hi there! Great! Give me an hour or so, and I'll write something down and post it here.

For simplicity I will assume you have no knowledge at all. And I'll use my setup as a reference. I hope that's okay. Also, if anybody else reads this and I make errors, please feel free to correct me. No harm in that! :)

Thats cool! Quick questions.

Standard version or Steam version?

Release or Open Beta?

Do you have a specific folder where you download stuff for DCS, other than the Windows default "Download"?

First , there are "two types" or "destinations" for mods. One goes directly into the install folders of DCS and are usually affected by updates and repairs. The other is in the user "Saved Games" folder structure.

We'll setup for both.

Also one must consider if the version of DCS is Release or Open Beta, or if DCS is installed through Steam. I don't use Steam version. So there might be differences if you have, but I believe it's easy to adapt.

I will assume you have the non-Steam standard installation. Release and not Open Beta.

First you have installed the new Open Mod Manager, and now we must setup a context. As far as I understand it, context means "game". So it seems you can use it to handle mods for different games.

Well, in "Open Mod Manager", click File -> New -> Context, and click "Next".

Just call it "DCS World 2.5.x", (can be changed later), and choose where to save the settings for the context. I just made a folder in "Saved Games" and called it "Open Mod Manager.

2020-07-29_21-16-22.png.36bc5cbaf77d64559fad9c51ffc40b5c.png

Location wizard starts. Now, we have to setup a destination for the mods, and the mods library.

First make a folder somewhere (everything can be moved and changed later),

like: "drive:\DCS - Downloads", and three other folders inside. Name them like this:

"1. Saved Games Mods"

"2. Root Install Mods"

"3. Temp folder for making Mods packages".

(The preceding numbers are just for easy sorting).

2020-07-29_22-28-17.png.c22de43dfefcc6a23cb8742b25a88f87.png

Back to the Mod Manager and browse to your "DCS" folder in "Saved Games", and click "OK".

2020-07-29_22-28-47.png.ad12b8c629de8070a8cc2f528c0c7f7c.png

Then browse to the newly created folders, and select number 1, and click "OK".

2020-07-29_22-31-23.png.0524d915de4c72a3df173fb60d8c96c9.png

And click "Finish". (Forget about the back up setting for now).

2020-07-29_22-33-18.png.331abee9cce3a1eb7d8285e0fd6eeffb.png

You will have something like this, only yours is empty.

2020-07-29_22-37-18.png.d3c14bfbb24f35ba051f75a8dd282ea5.png

Now, we will add the root install location Click. Edit -> Context -> Add Location.

2020-07-29_22-42-58.png.420959c875af625c20c22182e6cad613.png

Browse to where DCS is installed.

2020-07-29_22-43-52.png.6a84725a5ee422af335a0db50e0b54d2.png

Click "OK". And select the mods library location, from one of the folders you made. (.2)

2020-07-29_22-46-36.png.6673e74db8ffa4a031ef08725bec6965.png

Click "OK" twice.

2020-07-29_22-46-59.png.99e69eb3c2330dfa54f4e1200a545a63.png

And you are back here:

2020-07-29_22-47-07.png.b98597111067935de88578bc0d46c664.png

That was the setup. The "hard" part. (For Open Beta, it is exactly the same, just different destination folders). Now over to the fun part. The mods!

But first a little info.

The mods in the "Saved Games" folder doesn't really need a mod manager. Because they can just be copied into the "Saved Games" folder. But I like to have them in the mod manager, so I can easily see what I have, and have installed. (Also, when you "add" them to the mod manager, it's easy to have a structure for making portable packages).

The mods can be "made" in two ways. Just a folder in the repository, or made into a zip file, a package.

--- Before I forget. are you already using Skatezilla's excellent launcher app? If not you should get it immediately, as it can be really helpful, if something goes wrong with the root install mods.

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=160053

The way to handle "Saved Games" mods vs. root install, is exactly the same. It's just a matter of knowing or sometimes choosing, whether it should be installed in the "Saved Games" or root.

Let's start with that campaign I suggested.

To have it in the "Saved Games", and appear under "My Campaigns" make folder structure like this:

2020-07-29_23-33-25.thumb.png.75faf4618198443932f506e3507fdf01.png

And to have it appear under the F/A-18C under campaigns, like this:

2020-07-29_23-33-47.thumb.png.4aa3c661a19b973131173c9d57db5ac8.png

Just like I showed you in the other post.

You see the difference right?

But now, to install it. Right click on it in the Mod Manager and click install. To remove, the opposite. Good practice is to uninstall all mods in the root install before every DCS update.

Why don't you start with this? And when you're set, I'll suggest some other mods, and how to set them up.

Cheers!

I use the standard version and release. I download all my files to the default download file on windows. Thanks for taking the time to do a step by step guide to get me set up. I really appreciate it. I will try and set it up tonight using your step by step guide and I’ll let you know if I’m successful.

I also have another question if you wouldn’t mind answering. When I was flying in the liberation campaign last night I was taking off from the Carrier and I couldn’t find the carrier ATC freq. it wasn’t on the mission briefing and it also wasn’t in the mission editor screen? Do you have any idea where to find the ATC freq for carriers in the liberation campaign?

Hi Sean! I saw your other post 'bout the frequency. I tried a Liberation mission myself, and there wasn't any listed in the briefings, like you said. Now. I have a feeling the SCs have a default set, as it seems with the TACAN stations. But I couldn't find a reference for it anywhere. I was going to test with VAICOM, (then I can just say 'select carrier/name' and it will tune to it), but my computer acted up and I only got 8fps for some reason, so I just gave up. This was with lib09, the 06 didn't behave this way, I'll check out out later today, if I have time.

Good Evening Max, I tried to use your step by step guide today and I encountered a problem straight away. After I’ve opened MOD Manager and clicked file the only option it gives me is “Exit” there isn’t a option for “Next”.

I have also found the ATC freq for SC it is the default setting of 127.5MHZ.

Thanks again for all your help

No on the only thing I get when I click file is exit. So I have downloaded mod manger from DCS. I download the file into my default download file on windows. I then extract the file in the same downloads file and then I click on the mod manager file and open up the mod manager when in the mod manager program I click file and the option it gives me is exit.
