Oculus Rift S With DCS World Discussion

it depends on what you expect.

Yes, higher fps and prolly higher settings, but the price you have to pay for that is ridiculous.

I would wait for the next generation of GPUs (which I assume will be even more expensive).

As long as there is no competitor for Nvidia, we will have to pay...

That's what I am doing. I've had my 1080ti for two years now and it's served me well. I will wait until the next series which may be in the spring of 2020. I also think they will be expensive and we will pay through the nose but that's because there is competition at the low and mid range, just not at the top end.

You´re right, this is a wiser decision. Thanks !

For Rift S there is no reason to upgrade to 2080ti imho. 2080ti is still not powerful enough to run dcs at 80 fps (with pd 1.5 and MSAAx2).

It's not the GPU, the problem is DCS is unable to make use of our new CPUs and thus won't ever reach high fps.

It's a problem with the game so we must simply wait for ED to rebuild their engine from scratch...

That's going to need more than two weeks..

The day I max out at <80 FPS (out of a maximum 80 in Rift S) and my GPU is only running at <100% to do it - is the day I believe DCS is 'CPU Bound'...untill then I will just keep upgrading my GPU, because that is clearly the weak point as it easily maxes out at 100% trying to reach the FPS limit of the headset. GPU has no trouble receiving all the info it needs from the CPU that is barely breaking a sweat - GPU just can't handle it all fast enough.

depending on settings, you can bring any GPU to its knees... in any game.

which implies, no game is ever cpu bound. you could run any slow bargain basement cpu and the 2080ti GPU will still be the “problem”

lol.

You can only throw hardware at it so much. In the end the game has to be optimized properly.

Current PC before I pull the Trigger on Oculus Rift S

Intel i9 9900K

EVGA RTX 2080Ti

Corsair 32GB of DDR4

I am wondering how good is the rift in terms of clarity in the cockpit will it be good enough to finally get rid of Track IR or is stuff still really blurry.

Check my specs in sig, pretty much same rig.

Rift S works beautifully for me in DCS.

As far as getting rid of Track IR, that is very subjective thing depending on the individual. I was using Rift CV1 prior to Rift S since Jan 2017, and had not used Track IR or monitor for flying since.

I keep Track IR for things like ArmA3, etc.

Like you, i've never used pancake either ever since going with the CV1, and now the Rift S. The S was a real surprise as to how good it is. Plus, it's not a heavy draw on your existing rig. All around a great unit!

Well sir we have the same rig lol

Is things really that much clearer

Over Rift CV1?

Yes a very nice improvement - but again, that can be subjective also.

The one thing I was very surprised by with the Rift S, was the clarity along with me being able to run it at pretty much the same GFX settings with same performance as the Rift CV1.

Thr Rift S defaults to 40 in DCS in most instances . You should have no trouble holding that with appropriate graphics settings . Be prepared to make some compromises with that 980 . For example , MSAA , flat terrain shadows , pd - pick 2 out of the 3 .

I's seen many, many comments on the poor quality of sound and how easy it is to rectify by adding ear buds or whatever, but I have yet to read anything about boom mikes or a microphone pickup on the Rift headset. What do you guys using these VR headsets do about being able to communicate with others while online??

I only fly MP with friends in TS. S has a built in mic (no boom) and it works fine. But no mute button which I wish it had.

Hey Guys

I'm thinking about getting the Rifts S, that would be my first VR experience. Right now i'm using TrackIr on a 65" TV.

But i'm not sure my 1070 gpu will be enough, I only fly Viggen at caucasus right now.

I just upgraded the rest of my computer to I9 9900K and DDR4 3200 32gb.

But will it still be a cooler exeriece then sitting by a flat TV, and would it be possible to read all the instruments and radar?

/Oscar

It depends on what you expect.

The immersion will be fantastic compared to what you have now.

But, be aware that:

* you need to tune down your graphics settings. Shadows you might even have to switch off with a 1070. That would be an absolute no go for ME.

* the image will never be even close to the quality you have now. This is because of your "weak" GPU but also due to the low resolution of the Rift S (compared to a monitor and prolly also to your TV)

* spotting ground and air targets will be much more difficult. This also is true for airfields in the distance.

* the field of view is *very* limited compared to what you have now

Readability of instruments and display will be OK (I don't own the Viggen) but also not as good as you might be used to.

Anyway, most people who once tried VR in DCS don't and won't go back. It is such an incredible experience

I'd say go for it . I have had a very good experience with a CV1 and a 1070 ( including shadows) , and will be ordering the Rift S very soon .

uhm, there is QUITE a difference in performance between the CV1 and the S.

I seem to get very similar performance between the two.

Granted the Rift S is running at 80 Hz rather than 90Hz of the CV1.

I can't say definitely what the difference in performance will be , if any , as yet . As Don pointed out , many have found no significant change , although most such reports , it should be recognised , are using higher-end cards that may have additional headroom .

Having said that , i have been very pleasantly surprised by the performance of my 1070 to date , which has actually allowed me to maintain a very smooth , stutter-free 45 fps very low over the Caucasus with the graphics settings most important to me . (Water high , civil traffic , cockpit and terrain shadows , MSAA , 1024 displays in the Hornet , maxed grass/ clutter , trees drawn far enough out not to be popping up , etc)

In any event , next month i will be putting my money where my mouth is , and betting that my 1070 will give me a satisfactory experience with the Rift S .
