Adding ssd to new machine Q

Recommended Posts

Ok so my new rig has a m2 NVMe and has a open spot for a sata 7200rpm hd which didn’t op for. I’m able to add 2 ssd to the unit but my question is that should I hook a brand new 1TB ssd to the sata 7200 he spot or 1 of the ssd spots? Thx in advance.... trying to get all set up and buy some mods.

Well is the slot size made to fit a smaller SSD drive or something?? or is the drive space the same size..

It should not matter it all plugs into the SATA Port on the motherboard they are all the same abit different spoeed SATA Ports..

so the slot where you can put the SSD and HDD the same size you can put an SSD in the HDD Slot with a SSD CAddy..

Yes exactly it’s a empty slot where a 3.5 sata would go if I went dual drives. I was wondering if the transfer speed would be better in that 3.5 slot. Thx for reply

I forgot to mention that there is 2 available ssd slots. I’m thinking just put it in the 3.5 hd slot.

OK I think I see what you are saying the Slot means nothing most where made for a 3.5" HDD but you can put in a smaller 2.5" SSD with a Caddy..

Then you need to be plugged into the correct SATA Slot on the motherboard if it has both SATA3 and SATA 2 ports on the motherboard.. and you should use the black SATA cable that came weith either the moptherboard or SSD itself..

it should be printed on the SATA Cable which version it is for..

Yes I bought extra sata cables with ssd so when I opened my Alienware R9 I saw where there is already a sata and power connection where a 3.5” HD would go. So instead of putting the ssd in one of the ssd cage can’t I just put it where a 3.5 HD would go...if I went the option to go dual drives which I didn’t ... I just went for a single drive NVMe. Dang I’m sorry so freaking new to this is driving me crazy. I just want to put the Samsung 1tb ssd in and get DCS loaded on the drive. Thank so much for your help.

Also let me add that sata 1 is the NVMe ... sata 2 is the empty spot where a 3.5” he would go and sata3 and sata 4 are open for use and open on the motherboard too. So should I put it in the sata 2 spot? God I hope this makes sense.

Ok wait I think i may have it. The mother has 1 NVMe and 3 sata connections. So I think it would be wise to put the ssd in the sata 1 spot which is where I opt not to have a 3.5” HD... the power and sata connections are already there. Wouldn’t that be the right thing to do? Much thx !

I doubt that, unless they only accommodate drives of a different length, the Samsung one is 80mm long.

The Bios wouldnt know imho.

You could order one from a place where you can give it back...or just ask Google.

OOPs...I didnt read correctly... I thought NVMe. .just google if it works. I still doubt it would not accept them.

Yeah I was totally like huh? I Called again on the tech support and was the same answer. A lot of cases of crashing and losing data. Is there other recommendations on gaming 2.5 solid state drives? If not I’ll just run DCS on the m2 2 tb drive. Thx for the reply.

I almost can't believe what the Dell tech guys told you, as many drives that come from Dell are actually Samsung drives with a different sticker "Dell" on them.

If it was me, I'd giveit a shot because if a drive is incompatible it would rather not show up in Bios than causing errors in use. It's an Intel PCH controlling the drives and that chip is from Intel and can very well work with Samsung drives, in fact I have 2 of them in my home running 850Pro's in Dell Optiplexes and all other drives I ever put in any machine were to 99% all Samsung Pro drives, till today, no errors.

I bet, if you order one from Dell, it is likely a Samsung drive, relabeled.

This is a stupid situation. I don't want to talk you into buying something that Dell knows it causes errors, for whatever reason. Samsung has many other drives than EVO and PRO, so there are chances to buy one from a dealer other than Dell and get the exact same drive...for less money.

Either way, one more reason NOT to buy pre-made boxes from Dell if you are a gamer etc.

They make perfect sense for offices, large scale deployment and for people who only have clearly defined usages and dont mind paying extra for all the positives Dell has to offer.

For a DCS simmer, Dell and alikes are maybe the worst you could do. Any local dealer can build you a better box for the same money or an equal box for less, hands down. What they cannot deliver, is a 5y trouble free parts delivery in case of malfunction etc... that is the difference.

As I get into DCS and learn more about all the computer stuff, I will eventually build one on my own. I'm an older guy... mid 50's that just wants to get my brain going and DCS and all its glory has lit my bells and whistles for sure. This is my first ever gaming machine. Anywho... Thx Bitmaster for your time and I will definitely soak in your advice.

The End !
