And a decent FFB stick I presume? I mean I don't care how good the MS Sidewinder FFB2 is I'm not trading in my Warthog for it lol

I've got a WH, but the stick is collecting dust in the cupboard as I can't fly with that thing. The spring is absolutely horrible and I prefer a better feel to the deal over moar buttonsies rainbowdashwink.png

 

Heh I don't mind the WH spring, I mean sure I'd love force feedback but in VR I really need a HOTAS to be even vaguely effective. Specially with something like the F-18 or A-10

I finally got to watch your interview full back to front and I loved the nerdery! It's much appreciated, especially as I'm really curious to know what the max allowable throttle setting is for taxiing on the CVN vs taxiing on land. Big thanks again to you and Greg for the info!

Loved the video. I still have some pictures of VFA-113 from '85 on their first cruise with the -18C on the Connie. The Russians sent all kinds of bears looking for them; it was the Hornet's first deployment and they wanted the sigint from an intercept.

 

Of course that was before the -14 was relegated to the fantail (Jurassic Park), and the standing joke was the Hornet had just enough gas to get off the front of the boat, turn around, and land...

 

Hard to believe those jets, assuming any still exist, would be older than their drivers...probably have weak detents, and you end up flying on the blower.

This brings me back to a thread I had made earlier, as to what happens when you pull the G-paddle and should virtual pilots be punished for it.

 

I don't think any false consequences should be added in - the real life consequence is a talking to and extra maintenance hours, which obviously we don't have to deal with (though I'm not part a squadron so maybe that's simulated too). Also, we play in lots of uncommon scenarios - there's probably a handful of times in the last 40 years of aviation where a pilot's life was in genuine peril in a dogfight whereas it happens several times a day for most DCS pilots. I'm sure the attitude to the paddle would be different if it was the difference between coming home and not - that's just not a common thing in real life normal activities.

FNAEBs, a few days/weeks/months in the tower getting chewed by the Air Boss for every minor infraction anyone in your squadron might commit, real or imagined...there's probably not a DCS pilot out there who hasn't been boarded, and I'll bet none of them have kept their wings.

 

This is a game, after all, and if I want to skid to a stop sideways on the boat and taxi on the blower I'm going to do so, even though that would be the end of a Naval career elsewhere. Strangely, all I need to do is restart the mission and they keep giving me new aircraft.

 

I shudder at the thought of the score page keeping up with infractions. Perpetual Enswine, X hours of flight, X*2 FNAEBs, 1/2X Court Martials...not pretty! :pilotfly:

Thanks everyone, trust me I re-watch the video and learn more from Greg every time. He did an amazing job explaining things.

 

Of course VFA-113 and VFA-25 (the two Hornet squadrons) were among the first squadrons in "low vis" paint. Given this is the Navy that means you can't see any contrast when they're in flight. It's also film; I would kill to go back and re-do those six years with my digital Nikon. I came back from Russia with 17k images this year, which is pretty typical of my spring vacations.

 

VF-21 and 154 were much prettier in flight. I found a model of the F-14A that has decals for an aircraft I caught in flight in August of 1985. Once that is released I'll skin the sucker for DCS.

 

This is actually VFA-25, but you see what I mean about low vis...I'll hunt around for the 113 pics.

As opposed to (yes, I know this is a Hornet thread, but I'm an old guy). This is the exact aircraft for which that model has decals. VF-21, 205, Air Wing 14, Constipation battle group Delta, WestPac '85. Perth was awesome!

With knowing all of those details you have to love DCS even more.

 

Had a smile on my face as I verified e.g. the speed brake limits in G's, alpha and landing config. Felt awsome how DCS's FA-18C does exactly like told by Greg in JAR's interview.
