Would this PC (expecially CPU) be good for DCS?

Recommended Posts

Considering upgrading current rig (listed in signature) for the following:

Asus GD30

Core i5-7400

16GB

2TB + 256GB SSD

GeForce GTX 1070

Windows 10 Gaming Desktop in Black and White

GD30CI-UK003T

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus-gd30-core-i5-7400-16gb-2tb-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-1070-windows-10-gam-gd30ci-uk003t/version.asp?tduid=1155c52ea760401fbb511efdf804cdde&utm_source=digidip+UK_2142931&utm_medium=tradedoubler

It retails around £1400 usually, but is currently available for £799.

Bearing in mind I would happily not spend £800, am I going to see a night and day upgrade with this rig, or should I just spend £250ish on a 1060 6gb (2nd hand)?

Thx

CPU seems to have the same performance as your actual computer.

Moreover, DCS is more about MHz than threads, so your overclocked 2500k might even do better than a non overclocked 7400 :

Just get a 1060 for your computer and call it a day IMO.

My resolution is 3200 x 1080, as I have a 1920 x 1080 main monitor and 1280 x 1024 monitor that I have an MFD on.

Does the additional MFD badly affect performance?

Compared to the GTX560TI you'll def see a big change.

Appreciate my GFX is a real weak point in my platform, but is spending £800 to end up with a slower processor a good idea, or i'm just better off keeping my pltform and upgrading only the GFX?

The new processor (which cant be overclocked) only clocks at 3GHz and mine is currently at 4.8. Would the fact its a newer generation offer me any other advantages, or for DCS its all down to speed, and the faster the better?

I'd get a 10x0 GPU and keep your rig, you wont win anything between those 2 CPU's but loose money.

Later on, change cpu-mobo-ram when prices are better.

Bit is correct. A new GPU will give you a noticeable boost in performance and will be a far better use of your cash.

Yep agree, maybe even aim a little higher for GPU perhaps 1070Ti especially if your considering VR

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

Just wait for the next gen right around the corner.

July announce date and questionable availability is hardly "around the corner". I don't expect next gen GPUs to be available until late Q4 2018, Q1 2019 is more like it.

My controls & seat

Main controls: , BRD-N v4 Flightstick (Kreml C5 controller), TM Warthog Throttle (Kreml F3 controller), BRD-F2 Restyling Bf-109 Pedals w. damper, TrackIR5, Gametrix KW-908 (integrated into RAV4 seat)

Stick grips:

Thrustmaster Warthog

Thrustmaster Cougar (x2)

Thrustmaster F-16 FLCS

BRD KG13

Standby controls:

BRD-M2 Mi-8 Pedals (Ruddermaster controller)

BRD-N v3 Flightstick w. exch. grip upgrade (Kreml C5 controller)

Thrustmaster Cougar Throttle

Pilot seat

On what basis do you make your statement?

Next gen tech is literally months away. Keep in mind Pascal is already 2 years old.

I base my statement on experience building PCs since early 90s and current GPU market situation.

Yes, it's months away. So is Q4 18. I suspect there will be shortages of cards and getting one close to msrp is going to be a challenge should they come out in 2018.

Good luck getting a card for MSRP right now. At least in the future, Nvidia has committed to selling more cards directly to consumer gamers instead of miners. I think chances are better to get MSRP instead of over MSRP.

I don't see how they can distinguish between miners and gamers easily. I hope you are right and we will see the cards sooner than later. The current situation cannot go on.

Probably user registration. If you're trying to buy 5 cards directly from manufacturer, they won't allow it, unlike the main distributors that sell whatever quantity an individual orders.

Have you checked GPU prices in the last few days?

I just purchased a new MSI (Nvidia) GTX 1070 Armor 8Gb OC for $639 USD on Amazon this morning. Ten days ago the same card was $9xx.

That may well be but I have a SLI bridge for my existing 1070 for when DCS gets that ability and should get an additional boost with Vulkan as I understand it.

Getting off topic here. Gonna stop before I get yelled at. haha

Don't... Ever... Count... On DCS ever supporting anything. This Vulkan talk we are all hearing may take years and a couple of GPU generations.
