2560x1440 or 3440x1440

Hi,

since I build a new system its time to upgrade my monitor too.

I mostly play DCS and cant decide between 3440x1440 and 2560x1440.

I have a 1080 that runs at 1924Mhz and a i3 8350k at 4.9Ghz.

Which one would you go for and why?

I was looking at a 27" with 2560x1440@144Hz or a 35" 3440x1440 @100Hz.

With the 1080 I would not get the 4k solution, you will lack some ooomps to drive that panel to desired performance.

I'm running a 40 inch monitor on 2560x1440 and am satisfied. Currently 70 frames stable in singleplayer but down between 30 -50 on multiplayer. DCS 2.5 is crashing a lot though. Lots of space to work with video production and programming when not flying around in Ka-50 or the F-15. Great experience :) 27 inch will do for 2560x1440 but you will be disappointed if you try to go 3440x1440 on a 27 inch monitor I believe. Don't go in the trap and buy a large TV. :music_whistling:

I'm always price conscious, so I'd probably go for the 2k at this point unless you're not sensitive to the price difference and/or need the additional pixels for other things.

Why?

The future of DCS is with VR. I think for a DCS-only system, this makes monitors a short term solution. It used to be that I could justify a somewhat expensive monitor. For example, I had a 20" 1600x1200 that lasted almost a decade through several CPU and GPU upgrades. This was purchased in a time when most people we're at 1024x768 and it held up well even after most people switched to 1920x1080.

I'm currently running a RIFT / 1080Ti. Recently, I decided I was missing the photorealistic details so I went back to my 144Hz 2K display with Track IR. That switch lasted all of about 20 minutes because, despite it's sharpness, the feeling of being in the aircraft was gone. To me, DCS World felt completely flat by contrast.

Considering the flaws of current generation VR (e.g., RIFT's lack of viewing range / sharpness, etc), we could argue back and forth and give pros and cons for a 2D monitor vs. VR. I like VR much better despite its flaws, but I totally understand why some choose the monitor option.

However, I think it is reasonable to expect huge improvements in the with VR that will reduce and eventually eliminate most of its disadvantages. I think in a few years, the majority of DCS will be done in VR. So, I probably couldn't justify the pricier monitor based on DCS alone....

You didn't say DCS only though, so maybe the decision really comes down to what other things you use your system for.... I think most gaming titles look good in 2K. A 2k display isn't nearly as good as say a 5K Mac, for things where additional desktop real estate for more open apps would be useful.

Thank you all for your answers, I agree that VR is the future and I have an Oculus, the issues is that my body can't handle it, I get super sick while playing, even with medication I get sick.

Therefore I decided to sell the Rift and get a new monitor. Currently I have a crappy 24" 1080p monitor. So anything will be an improvement for me in that regard.

I don't really know if i should go with 27" or 34", 60hz vs 100+hz, G-Sync vs no G-Sync and so on .

There is so much out there and to much conflicting information, all I want is a really nice smooth gaming experience.

Another thing is that the wide screen just feels more natural as humans see more horizontally than vertically.

If 34'' monitor than at least 3440x1440. Don't go lower with the resolution.

As for other options. G-Sync is IMO a must - at least once you try it out there is no way back (forget the crappy V-Sync, this abomination of technology should have never existed).

The ASUS is a really nice Monitor, its also very expensive, its about $1900 here in Canada.

If I fork out that much money on a monitor I will have to sleep in the garage :-).

You may also check out the Acer X34 predator. Should be the same as linked Asus monitor.

Edit: ASUS Designo 34 looks nice. Especially the IPS panel. No G-sync though - not an easy choice considering much lower price. One point however that many pople forget which is also important - the stand. Asus Design has an non-adjustable stand which on top of that looks quite short. If you prefer to have the monitor higher, on the level with your sight rather than watching down this monitor will not be a great option. Unless you want to stack books under the stand.

The AOC monitor is 3440 x 1440, which is the most popular resolution for ultra wide, 34'' monitors. It works perfectly weel so I don't see a big problem with 35''.

35'' 3440x1440: ~106 PPI

34'' 3440x1440: ~110 PPI

I went with the AW3418DW which is 3440x1440 at 34 inches. It's pretty sweet.

The pixel density of WQHD on a 35" monitor is NOT what you have seen at work. This is a totally different thing !

Have you seen FHD on a 27" screen ? it looks plain UGLY, you cant read a thing and the 35" at WQHD is exactly the same.

You should actually go and check it out personally, I dont think anyone likes 27" FHD or similar PPI.

I had the same decision a few months ago. I played DCS with a 27" FHD monitor (and a GTX 970) before and I compared many monitors and also the resolutions. Long story short, I bought a GTX 1080 and a LG 38" WQHD (LG38UC99).

I never thought that the difference would be like day and night. It's definitely a new feeling to play DCS and I really recommend you WQHD with a 34-38" monitor

P.S. On youtube you can find some very nice WQHD videos so you get a feeling how to fly with this fantastic resolution and how much more FOV (field of view) you get with an ultrawide screen
