ED Moderation of the tutorials section.

The newly created tutorial section of this forum is a great initiative by ED, but it needs to be moderated to be useful. As most of you have noticed, a certain DCS community has already spammed all their tutorials for pretty much every module there is. The issue with this is that most of these tutorials are wildly inaccurate, unstructured and unnecessarily convoluted which will only lead to new players to learn things incorrectly and inefficiently.

There are plenty of content creators that make tutorials of incredible quality that explain things accurately and in an organized manner. Please make sure these kind of tutorials are what our new players find instead of what we see at the moment.

I asked the Grim Reapers, as well as any other of the major or minor content creators to post their stuff. In fact, that was what the section was created for, if you don't like their stuff, please just chose to ignore it. Please see my posts in those sections, I am asking for all the good tutorials and guides, we want it all.

The Fact that the Reapers have so much content means its a good starting point for new people, are there more technical tutorials out there? Sure, but don't assume everyone likes to get super techy, some just want to have fun, and that is what the Reapers do, so lets be tolerant of all content creators, at the end of the day, you can choose to watch what you want to, and I hope other creators will submit theirs as well.

The problem with the GRs is that they teach bad habits and also confuse a lot of people. I have seen quite a number of newbies comming to the forums that have been utterly confused by those videos. Anyways, I think the GRs should have the same right to post their stuff here as others do, although their tutorials have more of an entertainment value than a teaching value. I suspect they might also do a great job in attracting new people to DCS, which is a good thing at least.

i've just watched some to see for myself and you are right. they are a bit painful (at least the ones i watched). i'd suspect they are not even meant to be didactic, but maybe more for viewers who don't play DCS themselfes?

that said, i think the first step in learning a new module should always be the official manual. even if you prefer those abbreviated manuals or videos, i think it's always good to have the manual open on the subject you are learning.

therefore i propose that the official manual gets his own "sticky" thread in each module section.

i know that every module comes with a manual in the download (at least it does on steam), but i think some people still miss it. by having it the first item in the tutorials forum, it might nudge people to actually read it.

The Fact that the Reapers have so much content means its a good starting point for new people [...]

That is plain wrong though!

I just purchased a ton of modules and about 7k worth of PC components because of the Reapers videos. You guys seem pissed because you got scooped. Alternatively, if you don’t have your own content then your completely out of line. Make a great tutorial! Don’t watch theirs! You don’t get to decide for an entire community whats “proper”.

The thing that kills participation in most clubs, groups, hobbies ect are the “elites” that try to be better than everyone and ruin it for all.

If you want your precious “exterior of the F5 without the incorrect rivet pattern” your going to need folks to join and PAY for development costs and staff.

THANKS CAP FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THIS WONDERFUL HOBBY!!

THANKS CAP FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THIS WONDERFUL HOBBY!!

+1 ... I dont get why all the hate, this community sometimes gets quite intolerant, it is unfortunate.

... I like Cap's style and while some videos are clearly made before he has fully learned the aircraft, most of them are actually quite useful and nicely done, for example he almost always takes a moment to explain the key bindings that he will be using (something that most other tutorials omit).

It's not though, they bring a lot of new guys in, and they show what fun can be had with DCS, just like many other content creators, for that we appreciate them.

Again, more choices are better, and being a choice, you can decide what you want and what you dont want, but doesnt mean it works for everyone.

Hi Nineline,

I consider myself to be a minor content provider in the overall scheme things. I have provided over 30 tutorials via my YouTube channel all posted here in the old Guides and tutorials section. Others can decide whether or not they are helpful or not but I do hope they consider them useful in some small way.

Your statement suggests you have contacted content providers for the provision of such materials. I can say that no such advances have been made toward myself, requesting such or indeed notification that changes are being made to the tutorials section for future reference.

As someone who has taken the time to share useful content for all members of the community, here on the forums I consider the lack of communication reference the changes rather disheartening as I do not know what is happening moving forward.

I have to assume the old tutorials section will become defunct at some stage...is that true? Also the materials I have provided historically, will they be moved to the new section or is resubmission required? Whilst new content is always appreciated please try not to neglect your regulars, communication can be a wonderful thing. Many thanks.

No, sorry, if you look at my posts there in the new section I am asking for content creators to share their stuff, to be honest, I couldn't begin to reach out to everyone, I would surely forget some, I love your ME tutorials, I hope you will share them here as well.

GR aren’t perfect , they don’t claim to be. They brought me to DCS, I watch their content for both info and entertainment. Thunderdome, birds & bees and campaigns all good fun stuff. I also watch redkite, spudkocker jabbers etc it’s all good as far as I see. There’s enough room for everyone.

I think you missunderstood me. I simply reject the notion that they (or whoever for that matter) are a a good starting point, simply for them having much content.

I can see, that them having much content, inevitably makes them a starting point for many, but this alone does not make them "good" subsequently.

It's just a thing of quality over quantity in general. Again, i've skipped only through a couple of videos, so i will restrain from further judging.

ps: You should really consider making the official manual a sticky post in every section. It's the holy book of every module and above all criticism!

Your YT channel may be still little known, but your Mission Editor series is really outstanding, with some subjects that I've never seen covered anywhere else .. In fact, your videos are what convinced me to give a try to the otherwise daunting-looking Mission Editor.

Thus, you helped me to appreciate that the ME is indeed a game within a game, so nowadays I really enjoy editing missions ... Thanks a lot, and I hope more people will discover your Channel at YT :)

Cheers

It's easy to maintain that, but frankly? Any section where training and help happens is going to need some level of curation.

Sure, but this community produces enough content that generally people have options, we still don't support the running down of people out there doing this sort of thing, GR isn't perfect, nobody is, but that doesn't mean its a free for all assault on them here. Honestly, they continue to improve and have made an effort to do so.

I think what "guides and tutorials" needs is to be locked from comments and questions. It becomes useless when tutorials are buried in pages of useless random threads.

Yeah, we are trying to keep an eye on it and will decide if we need to change how things are handled, we certainly don't need this to become a review site for YT creators.

Guys everyone has their place in DCS, I can bet you with very high confidence that GR have brought more people to DCS than anyone posting in this thread combined, regardless of how accurate their videos are.

Not everyone wants to take DCS as seriously as we do .... and if they are having fun, you can't tell them they are doing it wrong.

Seems to me that the original poster voiced an opinion about how he felt the the tutorial section should run, and the creator of that section said “I created it and this is how I want it to be run.

As far as I’m concerned that ends the debate. Only thing left to do is exorcise your right to view or not view specific content. Not sure how that could be any more clear?
