First I just want to agree that this is all just good conversation not argument do we agree on that.

:

All good my friend. You know how it is. We all get drawn to that one make or model that, to us, is the bike we must have and despite its problems we just deal with it.

I wish I could afford a few more. Sport-Touring, Cruiser, Retro-Classic. I'd fill my garage in no time.:D

With kids they all want toys too.

I was watching some YouTube's on how Cops go about training and patrolling using tactics.

There are some good videos to watch but here are three I think are good offering some great advice and skills to acquire.

Like in the one below they use:-

  • Marshaling
  • Signaling
  • Point Tactics
  • Spatial Awareness
  • Head Checks ...... etc

For escorting, its awesome watch.............

You see the non use of race-line riding this is how you ride on roads for safety and visual cues (threats and road signs)

Don't know much about Harley's but Softails Deluxe and Fatboys that I have seen are nice.

There is a place up west where there is a yearly huge Hotrod Show the Hells Angels and Bandidos get together once a year.

Note I dont have anything to do with them, just when they all come in its like watching a carrier come to port LoL

Are Japanese bikes cheaper, more dependable, and easier to source parts. Yes, but they have no soul...no character. If I could find one that sounded like this maybe I'd consider that. I do like some Triumphs but even they sound like sewing machines.

Usually you can't beat the sound of Duke, a friend of mine has a similar 1100S but the sound while awesome is definately not neighbour friendly. The last 10 years of Ducatis with improved reliablity and service life are now reliable, living, breathing companions.

As for VFRs the only one for me that had character was the RC30. I still enjoy Jap bikes though, always been a gixer fan but Honda and Yamaha being the quality choices. I grew up in the crazy 2 stroke era RDs, RGVs, KR1S, RG500, TZRs all behaving like boy racers on bikes, basically young and foolish. Takes a while for a youngster to realise that the real dangers on the road are usually yourself.

That’s a nice looking Duc, is it stock any mods or work done to it.

Ducati’s are a great brand and have had good success but what I have said in earlier posts is that you get a stock Jap bike preferably a V4 and fully work it then remap the computer and add mods then you have a solid performance bike again all preference/choice/taste etc.

So many guys just get for example a stock Honda VFR800Fi or Yamaha R1 and fully work it to about 180 -210 ish Hp at rear after "Dyno Tuned" and remap completed and great for track days.

A stock Duc compared to fully high performance mods can not be compared to stock vs stock.

Sure Ducs stock standard hands down on a mile run will kill off competition but watch…………………

For the full story behind bike and rider, click here:

http://bridgetogantry.com/2/index.php...

This BTG lap time would convert to about 7m28s full, or 7m23-24s for 'industry' or sportauto comparisons. Bike is 100% road-legal and ridden most nights at the 'ring

What does BTG mean?: http://bridgetogantry.com/2/index.php...

You just need a good mechanic and team to take your bike to and get work done.

Sadly I found out last week the guys I use to go to are not in business or have another company elsewhere that I don’t know of.

But looking at what you get nowadays with bikes is a leap ahead to what i was riding in the 90's and up to 2005.

The technology you get on bikes now is amazing like for example............

  • TCS
  • SCS
  • ABS
  • Digital Dash Screen
  • Ride Modes - wet, dry, race, sport, road
  • Lap Timer
  • Full Sensors suite through out the bike
  • IMU
  • ERS
  • CCU
  • SCU
  • SC
  • .................... Just so much more advancements in technology

So if I was to go for Duc I would get the Panigale 1299 - http://www.ducati.com.au/bikes/superbike/1299_panigale_s/index.do

1PANIGALER.jpg

So maybe maybe not as a family man we are looking at getting a camper like this.................. http://www.jayco.com.au/range/caravans/

Kids (girl and boy) want this and not tents but its a big investment into a future with wife as well, so who knows.

But I am still hoping in a few more years to hop back on and ride.

Its the 1200R done a tail tidy, rad protection, SC Project exhaust, crash bung stuff, probably get some carbon bits eventually, always wanted a Ducati, too old/sensible for the sports stuff now and the prices are twice as much as the Monster, no fairing was a conscious choice as I do tend to get a bit carried away tucked in.

Factory 160BHP will do me on a 207kg bike for the road, loadsa torque which is what I want, had the 821 for 10 months, fast enough just not torquey enough, no interest in top speeds anymore just the acceleration. To top that it is the best handling bike I have ever ridden and is purely a toy :smilewink:

Nurburgring is a tough track to exploit the power of a bike on.

Here's a good example of an R1 chasing an R6, the R1 is holding back a bit but the difference is not much.

Also no matter how fast you think you are there is always someone faster. :D

Track days are great competition events fun for in 1 vs 1 or even groups.

I love Rossi No:46 The DOCTOR.....

Anyway watch this nice video of MotoGP .....powerslides and drifting......................

Sweet 1200R. It was a toss-up between SC Project exhaust and the Spark exhaust I ended up getting.

I can't imagine how long it would take to learn a course like Nurburgring. Soooo many turns.

Speaking of torturous racetracks, The Isle of Man TT is coming up in a couple weeks.

I replaced my old Kawasaki Vulcan with a new 2016 Versys 650 LT about a month ago. It may not keep up with an S1000RR at Le Mans, but for a 7 day a week rain or shine commuter bike, it's the best I could find at any price point. Not bad for an $8400 ride off the lot bike ($7400 without taxes/fees), though I promptly spent another $2k on it. Hurrah for being way less than I was planning to spend. I was expecting to get a Honda VFR1200, BMW F800 GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000. Ended up liking the baby Versys best.

Bike handles wonderfully and is plenty quick off the line at stop lights/signs. Ton of cargo space too with the top box. Few pics below, outside pic is factory fresh. Other 3 are as it's actually fitted now.

Dang, I've never been in here!

Sad to say, I don't have my bike anymore. I'm considering getting another in a year or two, but would mostly be a commuter - looking hard at a Tiger 800.

I may get back to track days eventually, but I would look to go back on a 300 or 250 rather than the 600. I never got good enough to even come close to testing the limits of the bike. Mostly too scared to do so as well.

One of my last good track days about 3 or 4 years ago.

Nice gents ^^

@BeastyBaiter, nice looking bike and great riding position its also good for off road conditions, it is a good buy, M8.

Motorcycle Counter-steering -"Defensive Swerve" or "Defensive Counter-steering"

Now this technique has saved my life several times.

Once I recall was when a Nissan Patrol hit the brakes unexpectedly then indicates last second begins to turn to the right as we are both on the left hand on a FWY. I had just pulled into the left lane before this happened.

I had time to brake but on a FWY I'm checking my rear and there was traffic behind.

Technique - Check Spatial Arrangement Push-Right clear the threat then Push-Left level up on far right side of right lane, check spatial arrangement then wave the idiot! LoL This is done in seconds no time for if or maybe just needs to get done.

I will try to find a better video on this but watch..........

Now his done it to avoid a pot hole not so much a car there would be more lean shifting of the bike and body to the right and straightening up but you get the concept of the swerve which is life saving to get that down pat.

Just another video I found but not exact............

These two Gif's illustrate the exact reaction in defensive maneuvering...........

Defensive%20Manuevering%2002_zps7esanmxt.gif

Defensive%20Manuevering%2001_zpsjccwcn3c.gif

Practicing this will increase your reaction times and awareness (Combat S.A.) :megalol:

Back in the day we use to use ground lights in the center and with cable remote we would click left or right and you would be marked on reaction and head checks, speed, distance and posture as your are traveling down a coned pathway.

Its intense but thrilling to watch and do.

It's interesting that counter steering is so poorly understood by so many bikers. It is the only correct way to turn a motorcycle once doing more than a jogging pace. Type of bike is irrelevant. But I personally have seen 3 new riders go flying into the grass on the side of the freeway cause they couldn't make a minor course correction at speed. Fortunately none of them were hurt.

You do mean reduce your reaction times, right.

Oh and yes counter steering works on Harley's too.

@BeastyBaiter I'm not surprised, but yes there seems to be a lot of bikers that don't utilise a lot of safe riding techniques. Form cruisers to road bikes and most concerning scooter riders. Here you only need you car license to jump on one and play in the traffic.

No, "Increase reaction times = reflexes (speed)" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_control

Increase in-reaction times comes with practice much like in martial arts in sparring sessions you learn to read shoulder and hip movements before they even strike some look at the elbow instead of shoulder regardless its the knowledge and awareness with speed that increases the reaction times in routine practice.

It takes time and mental awareness in the pressure bubble you are in to produce the outcome desired.

"Sensory Evaluation and Self Assessment Training" - in other words how your mind speaks to your muscles so forth and analyzing for corrective measure.

You certainly don't want to be slower at swerving or counter-steering a motorbike.

I have had to study all this, things like emotional states of rider behaviors is another topic worth looking into if you love riding, it will save your life!

Absolutely love my Duke!!! Couldn't stand the thought of selling her before moving to Canada from the UK. So the old girl went into storage before I left. From my understanding I was prohibited from bringing any vehicle under 15 years of age? To be honest, this baby belongs on the track, far too much power to run ragged on the road. Plus, she scares the bejeepers out of me when pushed hard.

Now leaning towards an Indian Scout to tour the Pacific coast and Canada. It'll be quite a contrast, I'm sure.

Sadly, yeah most guys either get poor training at licensing testing or ignore everything they learnt.

Thats why I'm posting all this.

The first reactions are to panic, then squeeze on front bakes rather than have intent knowing "HARM".

Watch the video I linked much earlier in thread and all the info running down the thread.

People die, or are seriously injured for life because they are not trained or skilled. It is sad and costly to some nice bikes as well.

These are thing's that you can do on a Sunday arvo at a car parking lot using cones and someone with a stop-watch timing you and recording a video or just use today's tech, GoPro.

The three types of counter-steering:-

  1. Cornering
  2. Maneuvering
  3. Defensive/Swerving

These three types apply different techniques incorporating body posture, braking, throttle control, gearing up or down, steering, head checks and hand eye coordination.

For example.........

Cornering - is not braking through the apex where in maneuvering you might have to brake off to the side and in defensive maneuvering you are swerving through or a combination of above.

So for the purpose of developing those skill sets you separate them and create scenarios that concentrate on each task of counter-steering skills to practice until perfect and then and only then can you combine these elements as a complete lesson on advanced rider tactics. By adding multiple tasks at once to perform as a obstacle course to pass on.

If that makes any sense at all in the way I have explained it.

Visit post 30# here - https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3124368&postcount=30

Watch the videos in that thread they are life saving!

That video above not only has some serious mistakes in basic physics (using rotating frame of reference? Centrifugal force makes no sense otherwise). It also says some things rather poorly.

Brake while turning? OK, if you are trail braking on the track. Otherwise, heck no.

If you want great motorcycling advice for safety, get Twist of the Wrist II. Book and/or DVD. Shows you everything you need to know.

As for countersteering, all two wheel motorcycles work by countersteering. It's the same way a bicycle works. Nothing special or mysterious about it.

The key difference between cornering and swerving is in where you put your weight (body position). In a swerve, you counterweight, like you do with a dirt bike. In cornering, you put your weight on the inside of the turn so as to reduce required lean angle. Two different techniques for two different purposes, both of which still are examples of countersteering.

I think the point is to make awareness of counter steering because even though it is a natural action of riding on two wheels, it is not apparent to the rider he is actually doing this. When it comes to emergency situations without this knowledge the uninitiated reaction is to try and turn away from the danger with a steering wheel reaction instead counter steer away from the danger. Practice makes perfect and in this case it can save your life.
