Suitability of my planned PC upgrade for DCS

Recommended Posts

Dear All,

I suspect that there is a problem with my motherboard so I am thinking of replacing it and upgrading my PC. I was wondering if you could state your opinion whether the following upgrade will be good for the DCS, in particular considering VR.

My current build: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard, i5-4690 3.5GHz CPU, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM (I had 16GB but the problem I mentioned), MSI GTX1060 6GB GPU, SSD, Win 8.1.

What I plan to get: MSI H270 Gaming M3 Motherboard, i5-7600k 3.8 GHz CPU, 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM.

I will keep the rest of my previous build, in particular the GPU and Win 8.1, to save some money, unless you confirm that Win 10 is much better for VR as rumored.

I am interested to know if, in your opinion, I get significantly better performance. Otherwise I might want to fix my current system.

Looks OK, but I would go for 32GB with VR.

10 is really good imho but I have no VR setup.

If you have the extra bucks, take a "Z" 270.

That i5, RAM and mobo sounds great to me!

Whatever you do, don't listen to anyone telling you to get a ridiculous amount of RAM. No, 16GB isn't enough, you need 32GB. No, that's nowhere near enough--you MUST have 64GB or you'll have "performance" issues. 128 GB is almost enough!

I have a pretty decent video card (GTX 1070) and 16GB is more than enough system RAM. If anything, save that money and get a GTX 1080 Ti if you want to use a VR headset--you'll have much better performance than dumping money into tons of system RAM that you'll never use.

Video cards are vital for good framerates with high settings, and the fastest one you can get is essential for VR. If you absolutely insist on using a VR headset, I wouldn't waste my time or money on anything less than a GTX 1080 Ti. Forget the normal 1080--the 1070 is very close in performance and much cheaper. The 1080 Ti is far ahead in performance, and if you're going to get a super-expensive vid card, the 1080 Ti is the one to get.

Also, don't waste your money on an expensive i7 CPU--they don't perform any better in DCS World because it only uses two threads, and an i5 really will overclock just as high. It just isn't hyperthreaded--which makes no difference at all in DCS.

I am not so sure about what you say, my system usually uses 22GB RAM + 12-16GB SWAP while in DCS.

Yes, my video card only has 4GB, but do the math, substract those 4GB from the 22GB I see whenever I play on decent servers and you still have 18GB in use PLUS the swap.

It is not only DCS that needs Gigabytes of memory, also your OS and apps you run aside DO NEED a significant amount of RAM to function and run FAST.

Thing is, when I had 16GB in it, it never consumed that much, 12GB was the usual amount + 12GB swap usually.

Many VR-Users state that their performance also got more stable and smooth with 32GB system memory, most of them use 1080 and 1080Ti's.

Just because you dont have 32GB doesnt mean it is not worthy to consider imho.

Make the test and run it with 32GB, graph the usage, track what is using it and you will surely get to the same result.

If you are looking at an Intel K series CPU then I would target a Z270 motherboard instead of a H270. Also make sure that your 16GB of RAM is a two stick kit so you have room to double the memory down the track. I'm with Bit that 32GB is preferable if you can afford it. Though with RAM prices right now being as high as they are I think 16GB is a good middle ground.
