23mm cannon (ammo) question

Recommended Posts

I noticed that if you fire the cannon, the ammunition explodes automatically after a few seconds (if it didn't hit anything first) It looks a bit like the AA Flak guns and their shells wich were used in WWII. I assume it is some kind of safety feature so that when you are in some kind of aerial dogfight, not all the explosive ammo will hit random places in perhaps a city.

Does anyone know after at what distance these shells explode?

To my knowledge, there are many (if not all) types of HE-ammunition that will explode after a set time. You can also observe this on more modern (post WWII) AAA like the Shilka. The most recent development are shells which can be programmed to detonate after a certain time / distance travelled, depending on the range to the target.
