What does pre-purchase mean exactly?

I got the ED email re Normandy pre-purchase. What does that mean? In the email, it says available for download in late May. What is the point in purchasing now apart from the 20% discount? Anything? Do you get access to a pre-release version?

So that you have it and on release day you just enter the module manager and download it

and this way, your wallet has earlier a hole in it than when you buy it later :P

And no, the pre-purchase is most likely getting released to all

So here's what they say right at the bottom of their latest email...

The DCS: Normandy Map and the DCS: World War II Assets Pack will be available as a 20%-off, pre-purchase bundle for $47.99. Upon release in late May 2017, the DCS: Normandy 1944 Map and DCS: World War II Assets Pack bundle will be sold for $59.99, and the stand-alone DCS: Normandy 1944 Map for $44.99 and the stand-alone DCS: World War II Assets pack for $29.99.

Note: Those that took part in the DCS: World War II Kickstarter campaign, and provided a high enough contribution to receive the Normandy map, will receive the assets pack for free.

It's quite simple - you will make a saving if you pre-order

I asked if there was any reason to pre-purchase apart from the discount!

Maybe the answers to these few questions have already been posted elsewhere but I'm a little too busy with something else at the moment so bear with me please...

Is the 'assets pack' just for those who like to build missions - what happens if you want to fly a mission which includes items from the pack but you haven't purchased the 'assets pack'... will this mean these items just won't show up or will you not be able to fly that mission?

If we have contributed to the Kickstarter with enough $ and on our profile page we know we will be getting the map along with the asset pack for free, what do we need to do now? Do we still sign up for pre-purchase? Or after the Normandy release, if we go into the module manager to d/l, does it recognize us as getting it for free?

Do we still need to install the VC runtime 14?

Yes, you still need the VC update.

You will get the needed keys before Normandy is released, just like the kickstarter aircraft.

I know I will buy it sooner or later - I won't be able to resist it and heck, I've got nearly all the modules including the Spitfire so it's only a matter of when... I just wonder how long the 20% discount will be running for?

True, but if you're not willing to wait, it still provides a discounted price. I'm like a lot of people - waiting for a sale is out of the question. I want to be flying over Normandy within minutes of it's availability. Pre-purchase schemes make buying on that basis more attractive than waiting for months for the first discounted offer.

Fundamentally though, I'd pay whatever was asked - within reason - to get it on day 1. I did it with the Rift, I did it with every module that DCS World has released - as well as all the 3rd party ones.

Why is it an abuse of customer loyalty to boost sales after the initial rush has died down? Name any software house that doesn't discount in that manner. I prefer to look at it as a way of widening the market, and how is that ever a bad thing?

Can someone answer another question? If purchases are made at full price from ED, then we all get a 20% bonus to go towards future purchases. If we purchase, as I have done a few times now, at any offer prices, we don't get that 20% bonus, what is the point of the pre-purchase 20% bonus?

Going a little off topic but you use the bonus you receive against full price purchases that are not part of any other special offer.

Thanks for that. I thought it was on topic, as I am still trying to understand the point of pre-purchase!

As far as I can see, we get 20% off, but if we buy at full price, then we also get 20% bonus towards future purchases. Is it not the same thing? I can't see the benefit of re-purchase. Not complaining, just not sure what the point is, financially anyway.

[Partly sniped!]

See: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/support/bonus_rules/

You can normally only use the bonuses you've earned on full price products. Bonus use is capped at 30% per item.

You cannot use the bonuses during a normal sale but occasionally ED do special sales that allow you to use more than that. The item is still technically full price, you just can get a bigger discount.

You also cannot use the bonus on "New" products. <-- Bolded what you're missing to match with your question

So, 20% pre-purchase discount is pretty good.

If you wait 6+ months, you'll be able to get 30% if you've got enough bonus stacked up (excepting special sales).

Sorry, I still don't get it. If I bought Normandy + assets on release for $60, I would presumably get a $12 voucher to use towards a purchase of another full price product. If I bought Normandy + assets pre-purchase for $48, then I don't get the bonus $12. So in my little brain, I am no better off pre-purchasing, assuming I will be making a future purchase, of course.

What am I missing?
