That's right the level of Torque is exceptional. The rudder dance will become a familiar thing for all pilots

You think the IX is hard? Try it with a crap tonne more power...

Or don't use it all?

Does anyone know why the Spitfires had no lockable tailwheel? To me it seems such a simple way of making take-offs and landings easier for pilots who were sometimes very inexperienced. So many other planes had this, why not the Spitfire?

On the other hand; in all the pilots biographies I read I never, as far as I can remember, saw the take-off and landing mentioned as more difficult than in other planes because of the lack of a lockable tailwheel. Is the difficulty with the Spitfire in DCS perhaps caused by the lack of motion cues?

It didn't have a lockable tailwheel because, presumably, Mitchell didn't think it needed one. Although this is a Mk XIV thread I never found in the 20 or more biographies I have read of anyone having serious Spitfiee ground handling problems because of it.

Perhaps the tailwheel friction of our MkIX is underdone but then we are using concrete runways, I don't have quite so much trouble taxying across grass.

Non-lockable tailwheels were a standard in most (if not all) UK planes of the war. I've read once that in some late mark Spitfires that feature was added eventually, but never investigated if that was true.

I think we have a more difficult time because we dont have that sensation of motion like a real pilot would, I dare say they are reacting better and faster than we can, so it makes it that much more difficult. I cant speak to flying a real Spitfire of course, but that would be my first guess.

That guy explains it absolutely fantastic. Former IP and experienced in training taildraggers.

I found his insights very useful.

I am sure if you release the P-40 before summer and the XIV before winter a lot of those pitchforks will have been set aside :music_whistling:
