Does DCS World benefit from more than 16GB Ram?

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

32GB, just search the forum how many guys had erros and what not else...put in another 16GB and the sun came out again.

Sure, it runs with 16GB too, just how well and reliable throughout an array of missions SP & MP is a big ?.

Go 32 is my best and honest advice. You only do 16GB if you really cannot afford it for now, that is the only excuse.

edit: and yes..my next rig is 64 or 128GB. The cheaper RAM is the more I will put in. This like a 1200cc Turbo 13:1 compression engine that fails after 50k km, make it a 2.7L V6 with 9:1 and lower temps and it'll run 500k km. Dont press too much, not on an engine and not on RAM, they WILL let you down.

RECOMMENDED VR SYSTEMS REQUIREMENTS (VR GRAPHICS SETTINGS):

OS 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; DirectX11; CPU: Core i5+ at 3+ GHz; RAM: 32GB; Hard disk space: 60 GB on Solid State Drive (SSD); Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 / ATI RX480 DirectX11 or better; Joystick; requires internet activation.

The VR recommended specs are 32GB`s of ram, with the non VR version recommending the same 32 gigs of ram for multiplayer

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (HIGH GRAPHICS SETTINGS):

OS 64-bit Windows 7/8/10; DirectX11; CPU: Core i5+ at 3+ GHz; RAM: 16GB (32 GB for multiplayer); Hard disk space: 60 GB on Solid State Drive (SSD); Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 / ATI R9 Fury DirectX11 or better; Joystick; requires internet activation.

I have 24 gigs of vengeance pro ram, but can experience an occasional freeze in VR (rift) running a 1070, i7 4790K and EVO SSD. Ram usage usually sits around the 16 gig mark. In the process of picking up an extra 8 GB on ebay... and likely a used 1080ti at some stage, then sell the 1070 (Zotac amp extreme).

When in editor for a while memory usage can get pretty high 12G+

RAM: Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it ?

I think those numbers are with the patch !?

Last thing I know it came with a one of the patches 1-2 months ago iirc.

wow and I thought 32 GB was massive overkill when I built this system last year.

I bought this pack in 32GB actually for VMware usage and future proofing the rig as I know how hard it can be to find another 16GB 2 years later if you find out you need them.

Ive been getting a DCS crash every single time I fly BF. Its always a few minutes after loading into an aircraft (refueling). Could it be RAM (or lack of)?

I have 16gb 3200, i58600K, 1080ti. Most settings maxed out.

Doesnt happen in SP or on the 104th.

If you have many Hard Pagefaults, then even a SwapFile is not enough. Every HPF while you use DCS is a clear indicator that you lack memory.

You can put many things on a PF and it wont cause any itching, just when you end up pumping data on & off the PF during a flight, that is called HPF, you have a BOTTLENECK in I/O.

with latencymon latest version 6.72 it always show HPF on my end even tough I have 32gb of ram, even by putting 100gb as pagefile it always shows hardpage fault.

This from latencymon 6.70 ( newest i could find ). Fa18 PG freeflight 5min through the skyscrapers down low. All green with latency but Windows Defender seems to be causing my HPF's.

Not an issue I guess, I should disable RealTimeScan and check again.

I guess, with many HPF's for things like Defender it really pays if you have a SSD for swapping. A slow HDD could be an issue then, dunno.

Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Process with highest pagefault count: msmpeng.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults 80798

Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process: 72220

Number of processes hit: 29

haha..here is one without MS Defender...either I need a new test app or we have to stop at this point. The good thing is, it's not DCS and the number of HPF's is lower, tho the flights where not 100% the same, just about same time length and low level downtown PG ending with a crash, some F2 and F3 views in between, no F10 map btw.

here's the Stats HPF log snipped:

Total number of hard pagefaults 3474

Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process: 3440

Number of processes hit: 10

---edit:

I used Ressource Monitor from within task manager to show me the HPF's. It showed only 2, both were DCS. I did about the same flight, just more intense, fired weapons and some more stupid stuff.

even more strange:

I did another run with RealTimeScan back to ON and measured HPF's again in Res.Monitor. It only showed 2, DCS, not 80k.

Maybe both results are true, maybe not. I have no idea what Defender does while you run DCS. I will keep an eye on it with ResMonitor.

Maybe LatencyMon is not true because it interferes too much with the measuring, I dont know atm tbh.

Some laptop GPUs can be replaced, depends on how it's made, they're horrendously expensive, though. If your pegging out and can't do upgrades, it's unlikely RAM alone will buy you much unless you're crashing due to shortage

My gpu is the bottleneck and cant be replaced(laptop). Will doubling my 16gb RAM allow me to push higher settings or am I screwed until I build a new system?

Thank you

While 32 GB might, and I mean might, show a slight improvement, it is highly unlikely to be worth the investment. Save your money for a new laptop, or better yet, build a desktop machine.

Well the card is a 960m, and it uses the intel GPU in tandem, it has an extremely powerful cooling system if you keep it clean. So it’s not completely bad, just anything above 1080p or VR won’t work. I needed the laptop for my job but knew I might need somewhat good GPU, so it was a compromise. Thanks for the advice

That's a mid-range card and those were soldered on laptop mainboards so that's not upgradeable directly. I also doubt such a laptop has a Thunderbolt 2/3 port either?

The only other alternative would be to use some expansion card port (e.g. an M.2 PCI-E slot or an express card slot or some mini PCI-E slot) to connect to an external desktop GPU card via some 3rd party adapter card, but those can be tricky to get working.
