Operation Clear Field - Caucasus PvE Playground

Recommended Posts

Operation Clear Field is an open-world PvE playground for the Caucasus map. It is loosely based on the Russo-Georgian war of 2008. This mission uses the same mechanics that Operation Snowfox uses for the Persian Gulf map. The mission will randomly choose targets throughout the map. You can fly any role you like, and if you are on your own, you can use the radio menu to request support flights of AI planes to assist you. Most modules have been included. You will be flying against the Russians. The mission utilizes Moose functions and custom scripts which have been included in the mission file.

Check the mission briefing for AWACS/Carrier Group/Refuelling frequencies etc.

Notes on requesting support flights:

- CAP/CAS/Anti-Shipping/SEAD and Pinpoint Strikes are available to call in, you can choose the sector they will fly to

- Only one flight of each type can be active at any given time, so choose carefully

- AI flights will start near Khasab airfield and will await a "Push" command via radio when you are ready for them to proceed with an attack

- Pinpoint Strikes will only target specific structures in their target area, if the current target is not a building they will not target anything

Other radio options

- Check Current Objective will remind you what the current target is

- Target Report will give you coordinates and distance to the target, and if the target is a group it will tell you how many units are remaining in the group

- Abort Directives will allow you to send support flights back to base

As it is based loosely on the Russo-Georgian war in 2008, expect to be flying into the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions. Due to the West coast not having enough ports for a docks attack, Sochi is also a sector so I could put some things in a port. It is a long way to fly and I will probably have to adjust a few things but that's how it goes. This is a bit of a live test for version 1. Ok good luck

Tried it out tonight with some friends and had a blast.

Some issues we ran into were:

-Datalink wasn't working with AWACs in the Hornet.

-Some enemy fighters didn't react so us engaging them and kept flying level

-There are no Hornet fuel tankers

Other than that the mission is really cool.

- Datalink ... yeah looks like something has gone horribly wrong. Will fix as soon as I can.

- Do you remember your position on the map when this happened? I am guessing at this point you had not crossed the borderline into 'red' airspace hence they didn't engage you.

- Hornet fuel tankers? I'm not sure what you mean by that sorry. I am guessing you mean Tanker Texaco? Did tanker Texaco not turn up for you?

It was somewhere close to the mountains north of the airfield you spawn at. It was two Su27s heading north west.

Also my bad - didn't realise texaco could refuel hornets - I didn't see the fuel lines on the outer pylons.

Ok cool yeah I was going to have heart attacks if the tankers were not showing up.

Meanwhile attached is a map of the Russo-Georgian war which I have cleverly scrawled all over like a 5 year old to show you the border (the big orange scribbly line). If you fly over that orange line the Russians will come and try to intercept you. If you stay on your side of the border, then you should be ok 'mostly'. I am guessing you were flying near Lenetekhi or something by the sound of it, which would make you 'safe'. However, if you cross the border then cross back, it does not mean you are safe. The Moose AI A2A dispatcher does all that work. Hopefully that gives you a bit of an idea of what is going on in the background.

I am considering making the border about 20km further into Georgia than the actual border so extend the Russians 'reach' just a little. I won't change anything until I get some more feedback on this one. Because of the layout, this one is more complicated than what Operation Snowfox was because the border in Snowfox was literally the international waters line between Oman/UAE and Iran.

Edit: Also if you and some NZ guys are flying around in this hit me up sometime. I'm in Sydney.

Cool man. My steam name is proctoss so feel feel to send me an invite and I'll let you know when me and my friends are playing it.

The borders haven't really been an issue for us so I'll leave that for other people to comment.

Is there any way to delete the friendly F16s? I had a look in the mission editor but couldn't find them. I'm assuming they are part of some trigger? They aren't really a big problem but it would be cool if I could make a version without them for when I have enough people on to defend the base. Also the game tends to spawn more of them over time which seems to impact server performance.

So far, I'm having alot of fun with it. Only suggestion I can think of is maybe add some CAS missions with ground forces going at it? Although that may just be a mission I haven't seen yet.

Overall I've been trying to build something like this myself for years, but my coding skills are lacking. So this is a VERY welcome addition!

Same as Snowfox, this one has 100 target missions that it will randomly choose from. In my first design I had these groups late activated and some of the groups did fancy things. The problem with that was the map felt empty. So I changed it all around so that all the groups were active and my poor old potato machine couldn't handle it. So then I made it 100 target groups where none of the groups were moving around and performance seems to be ok.

There are lots of things I would love to do but there is only so much you can pack in before performance goes downhill.

i was considering adding 'special missions' after a certain amount of time has elapsed. I figure maybe after an hour or two enough regular groups will be dead that spawning late activated special missions might not blow up peoples machines.

Cheers, will check out the update - after trying out last night I found in the Mirage I was always given A-G missions (despite the slot being CAP), which was fine - but these missions might be 'kill 4 tanks' and around the stated location are say 10 vehicles, which in a Mirage requires a slow flyby to try to identify the specific '4 tanks' you have to kill.

Same with a couple SAM/AAA missions I tried - a whole bunch of vehicles withiin a 1/2 mile radius with no way to identify which ones you actually need to destroy, and too spread out to just cluster the whole lot...so really was just a crap shoot as to which ones you managed to kill with rockets/guns being the right ones for mission completion.

The 'Skip Mission' might help with this.

There are no specific air to air missions at this point, all the missions are ground targets. I do plan to expand on the red bomber attacks part, but for actual regular CAP related duties, I think it is unnecessary to add specific targets to attack.

Ah all good, no worries - so just take off with no specific mission and perform CAP. Trying to combine a A-G mission completion with CAP is a bit tricky in the Mirage due to the limited payload possibilities.

Basically yes for CAP just go shoot planes down. Remember a) you can call in AI to do whatever roles over whatever sector at any point to help out and b) you can ignore the missions entirely and go do whatever you like. The missions are not timed or anything and there is no failure states that will stop the mission etc.

Sometimes I just jump in there to jam out some hot moves in the Tomcat or if I'm feeling really suicidal, I'll have a crack at it in the MiG-21Bis and see how long I can last. Other times I'll escort AI SEAD/CAS flights or whatever and focus missions.

Hearing this makes the ridiculous amount of hours spent in the editor worth it

One day I might even get to just ... you know ... fly again haha :pilotfly:

Edit: I have just got the Fleet Defence planes working in Clear Field. Moody screenshot attached.

  • 3 weeks later...

v107 is up which now provides a persistent world environment.

Changelog v107

- Persistent world for ground units, ships and static objects, this will require de-sanitization of 'lfs' and 'io' in MissionScripting.lua. On servers please ensure that the simulation is being run with sufficient privileges to write to the DCS World installation folder.

- Train missions have been substituted for other targets due to issues with mission scripting

- Recovery tanker for carrier group has been introduced, and rescue helo because why not. Big thanks to FunkyFranky for the script and the guys at =JAGTF= for pointing me at it! The recovery tanker frequencies and tacan have been added into the mission briefing

- F/A-18's and F-14B's on the Stennis no longer have a pair that start with air to ground load-outs. The CAP groups for each have been increased to a group of 4. This is part of a re-organisation of tail numbers and callsign adjustments which I will explain in more detail when it is finalised.

- A-10C group increased to 4 planes

- AV/8B group increased to 4 planes

- M-2000C group increased to 4 planes

- A bug with the target report on server environments where the report would spit out twice for each player under certain conditions has been fixed

- Radio channel adjustments for some planes

Note: if you do not de-sanitize 'lfs' and 'io', then the script for persistent world will halt, but the rest of the scripts will run without it so if you don't want to enable this feature then you can still enjoy without it.
