New M.2 From Samsung

Recommended Posts

There are a few of us building new PCs here so FYI:

https://www.pcgamer.com/samsungs-new-970-evo-plus-ssds-tout-faster-speeds-at-lower-prices-than-970-pro/

Samsung 970 EVO PLUS, maybe faster and cheaper than 970 PRO.

Hot on the heels of WD announcing its Black SN750 SSDs with an optional chunky heatsink to lessen throttling, Samsung today responded with its new 970 Evo Plus line of SSDs, which on paper is its fastest consumer NVMe offering to date.

It's somewhat of a surprise release, and an interesting one when you compare the specs to Samsung's 970 Pro family. Samsung has always saved its best performance for its Pro family, while its Evo drives have traditionally offered better pricing at slower (though not 'slow') speeds.

In this case, however, the upgraded 970 Evo Plus drives are rated to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 3,500MB/s, and sequential write speeds of up to 3,300MB/s.

The sequential read ceiling is the same as the 970 Evo (non-Plus), but the 3,300MB/s write ceiling is significantly faster than the 2,500MB/s of the non-Plus family. Speeds vary by capacity, but here's how the rated performance compares at the top end of each SSD family:

New Samsung 970 Pro Evo: 3,500MB/s seq. read, 3,300MB/s seq. write

Samsung 970 Pro: 3,500MB/s seq. read, 2,700MB/s seq. write

Samsung 970 Evo: 3,500MB/s seq. read, 2,500MB/s seq. write

"Since introducing the first NVMe SSDs to the consumer market in 2015, Samsung has continued to challenge technical barriers in SSD design and performance," said Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. "The new 970 Evo Plus powered by Samsung’s latest fifth-generation V-NAND technology will now offer unrivaled performance in its class when taking on demanding tasks like 4K content editing, 3D modeling and simulation as well as heavy gaming."

For this new series, Samsung is using 96-layer 3D NAND flash memory chips, which is the fifth generation of 3D NAND, and an upgrade over the 64-layer 3D NAND that is found on the 970 Evo.

This is where the added performance comes into play. According to our friends at Anandtech, the controller is the same as the previous generation, so beyond any tweaks to the firmware that Samsung might have made, it's really all about the chips here.

The newest generation of 3D NAND also allows Samsung to remain competitive with its pricing. Samsung is offering the 970 Evo Plus in capacities up to 2TB, at the following price points:

Samsung 970 Evo Plus 250GB: $89.99 (~$0.36 per gigabyte)

Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB: $129.99 (~$0.26 per gigabyte)

Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB: $249.99 (~$0.25 per gigabyte)

Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB: TBA (April)

Compared to 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, these drives obviously cost quite a bit more, to account for the NVMe interface and much faster speeds. However, pricing is in line with the 970 Evo series. Here's a look at what the previous generation SSDs currently sell for on Amazon:

Samsung 970 Evo 250GB: $85 (Amazon)

Samsung 970 Evo 500GB: $129.99 (Amazon, on sale from $149.99)

Samsung 970 Evo 1TB: $279.99 (Amazon, on sale from $299.99)

Samsung 970 Evo 2TB: $499.99 (Amazon, on sale from $599.99)

Pricing looks even better compared to the 970 Pro. For example, a Samsung's 970 Pro 1TB sells for $399.99 on Amazon, which is $150 more than the same capacity 970 Evo Plus.

Now that question is, does Samsung have a 970 Pro Plus up its sleeve? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, the 970 Evo Plus looks like a compelling option for enthusiasts who need those kinds of speeds. It will also be interesting to see if this drives the price of the regular 970 Evo down.

Yahh, the numbers are awesome, I/O and writespeed, NICE :)

Soon the controllers will reach peak throuput on both read and write.

It's about time to move them to PCIe v4 or v5 to double or quad the bandwidth ;)

Glad the WD Black's exist, keeping samsung prices in check. Last I checked on newegg current 970 evo prices matched the WD Black pre-orders.

Also glad samsung is responding with the Plus.. while still having to compete with the WD Black prices.

The only good thing about the Z390 Dark being on back order is waiting for new stuff to come out. The Dark seems like awesome board that will last many years. I actually read the manual already.

Newegg has the new WD Blacks listed as having a 5 year warranty, current 970 Evos listed with a 3 year warranty. I might just have to shop for WD when I get to the point of having another $380 to blow for a 500gb and a 1TB.

Interesting post and thread. Thanks for all this!

Similarly to dburne I also recently built a new PC with both 970 EVO and PRO as it's my main professional tool and simming rig.

The speeds are impressive and if the PRO SSDs are supposed to retain their high speed more consistently than the EVO (MLC V-NAND vs TLC V-NAND) I still have to witness how different they can be.

SSDs performance slows down as it becomes full, and that's why I chose a 970 PRO as my system and main working storage (so I don't lose speed over time, as it gets filled by files/data).

I'd be curious to see how a possible 970 PRO Plus performs and how noticeable the difference can be compared to the current PRO version.

At this point, I can only say that both (EVO and PRO) are blazingly fast and I can't tell the difference with my current use (but I didn't push them yet).

DCS is installed on my 970 EVO.

Hi Headwarp,

Do you mind telling me how you like that 34 inch monitor?

I initially will be using a 30 inch 2650 X 1600 antique, but will be upgrading real soon.

Been eyeing these:

I'll be picking up a 970 m.2 from which I want to run DCS.

Q: Is it as simple as dragging the whole 'Eagle Dynamics' folder across and creating new shortcuts or is there more involved?

What about the DCS stuff that lives in the 'Saved Games/DCS' folder (config, missions etc)? Does that need to be migrated too?

I am super new to DCS but if you cloned the drive I wonder if DCS could tell the difference?

I love my monitor. The only real caveat is it likes GPU power. When I got it 980Ti was pretty much the best option and the card was just barely enough for it. 2080Ti is almost too much for it, but kind of right in the sweet spot. IN DCS with the monitor I can see CPU cores hitting 99% but gpu usage stays above 97%.

With my settings getting like 70-80 fps minimum.

it depends on many things but 4 is not really an issue for most 2600k. the later the edition the higher they clock per se, mine did 5.0G at 1.35v back then. What a great chip that was.

So, you got a month playtime, sharpen your overclocking skills :)

Thanks for the encouragement, I am off to Costco to get some Dust Buster air blowers, this rig is 5 yeas old.

What CPU cooler do you use?

I was looking at the Noctua D-15 but EVGA has shifted the CPU socket and moved the memory slots so I need to contact them and make sure the D-15 fits.

I switched to an h100 for my current PC build and am sold..will never go back to air cooling a cpu. 240mm AIO unit will give you some headroom for overclocking, and keep those hex and octa core cpu's in check. afaik most of them are compatible with any intel socket. ALthough you need access to the back of the motherboard to install the bracket. Can run the radiator and fans as front intake or top exhaust. Exhaust being the better option in theory, but either works as long as the fans can grab air and get it flowing in the right direction. I don't have the motivation to build and maintain a custom loop.. but my AIO has been solid.

my i5 2500k was pushing 4.5ghz on air but temps were higher than I'd have liked. I probably could've gone higher with an AIO. But I built a new system before trying one out.

It's certainly not a nightmare to migrate the DCS install (to the point I don't remember accurately what I did ^^).

Iirc I just copied my DCS program folder to the new SSD (non-system, different path from my original install), copied the Saved Games/DCS folder from my backup to my new NVMe SSD and then just fired it up.

I had to enter my serials as it was a new machine, but that was about it. I paid a visit to the settings and changed a few things.

I think I just updated as usual (using the DCS_updater.exe).
