Zombie as a DCS trailer soundtrack....really?

.....thats the oddest and potentially most inapproriate choice of music you could possibly make. What on earth, if anything, was going though the mind of whoever decided on its use? Please dont tell it was because it holds the words "tanks" and "bombs".

Bloody turgidly awful version to.

Pretty sure that there are a gazillion better choices for a game that is principally about war and killing than an anti violence protest song inspired by the senseless murder of two young boys in a terrorist bombing.

MSI Tomahawk X570 Mobo, Ryzen 5600X undervolted on Artic Freezer E34 Cooler, RTX3080 FE, 32GB (2x16GB Dual Ranked) GSkil 3600 CL16 Trident Neo RAM, 2X 4th Gen M2 SSDs, Corsair RM850x PSU, Lancool 215 Case.

I found it an odd choice too. Usually the DCS trailers are incredible - the 2018 one for example, the F18 and the F14 stuff, I didn't even watch this one til the end. To be fair to them, it's probably just because all of the others have been absolutely exceptional.

If you mute the trailer and play Hall & Oates 'You Make My Dreams' whilst watching it actually syncs up pretty well. This might make you feel better.

The trailer itself is astonishing, it required whole lot of time, skill and effort to set up all this scenes. But yes, the music is odd, it fits like chalk and cheese.

In contrast previous Supercarrier trailer was also awesome and the music - Anchor Aweigh, US Navy anthem - fits perfectly! One of the best choices I've seen. Many Heatblur trailers also have fantastic music choice.

I never understood this new trend of combining dynamic warfare show with slow, emotional, meaningfull, songs with lots of vocal.

Except for that one thing - DCS has by far the best trailers in their genere.

It's because Zombie is a protest song against IRA actions. That's why it's odd to use it in a Combat Simulator context.

You can add the British army and their loyalist paramilitary proxies into that mix as well, as their numerous murders will testify to same. Such is the dirty nature of colonial conflicts and their history in Ireland.

Hello,

i have to say that i agree with the OP. I do think that the trailer was very well done apart from the music. It's highly subjective and debatable what songs and themes are appropriate for a game that is to some part about war and killing, but for me those highly emotional songs leave a weird taste when paired with footage of war and destruction. It's cheesy at best.

It's a very fine line though. Last years 2019 and beyond trailer had a similar tone, but worked better for me.

Generally i feel EDs trailer are very well done and i still enjoyed the current one for the imagery and features presented. If you wanna do more of those doleful vocal tracks - maybe go for a video which focuses not on combat but more on the aviation aspect of the sim. Nothing wrong with some sentimentality when aircrafts fly into the setting sun...

A bit of a surprise, yes. But really a reason to be offended? I really think going for the somewhat sombre tones isn't quite amiss at times, generally. Am I perhaps missing how that song in particular has a bit of a special place in Ireland in particular? Honest question, I don't know.

Good song but in no way totemic in Ireland. There are many other traditional and older songs that occupy that space. Delores was a local here who you'd often meet in the shop or out walking the road near her home with her kids. No one ever took any notice, even when she and the lads were filling stadiums in America. One of the great Irish bands to break the States.

Whew. I thought I was the only that found it jarring.

Dolores O'Riordan, I imagine, would not be amused.

And yeah, I'm pretty certain it was chosen just because of that lyric: '...with their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns..."

Reminds me of the people who think "Fortunate Son" is a pro-war song because it's often featured in films about the Vietnam War.

I don't think that anyone here is "offended". Also this is not about politics (well it is in that sense, that everything is political in some way).

It's simply a questionable artistic decision. I feel that it's cheesy (the general sentimental tone) and not very tasteful (anti-war-song to a war game). I'm not offended and if you enjoyed the video, it does not make you a bad person. Everything is fine!

I'll put on some of good ol' Richard Wagner's Walküre now.

I wasnt especially offended it was used. In fact im more offended by the awfulness of the cover itself if im honest. Zombie is an angry song not a sad one and certainly not a suitable subject for the "look at me im really sensitive cos i can play a song slowly" brigade (here is where Hall and Oats could be of use as that song would be perfect - Happy makes good sad - lesson 1 in the "how to be interesting with an acoustic guitar" tutorials).

But thats not the reason I posted. Its simply a very strange and, to me anyhow, inapproriate song to use given its lyrical content.

FYI The song has its inspiration in a bombing by the IRA on the uk mainland but i dont think it makes comment on just that but rather the cost to civilians brought about by those prosecuting such actions (in all places and on all sides).

Using a crap cover version is the biggest sacrilege, at least use the original version. As for it been a anti-war song and its suitability for the video in question. I don't believe ED are expecting us to expend the mental bandwidth required for the purpose of a in depth philosophical conversation in relation to the matter. They just want to entice us to open our wallets and purchase the next releases, which I have no issue with. Such is the way the game works.

I think you underestiamte how deliberate ED and other developers of sim-type-games are considering the presentation of their products.

Since they will always have to work with the ambiguity of making a fun product of something that is generally seen as the opposite of fun, you can normally see that they actively avoid mixing the topic of their products with spiritual or ideologic themes as more casual shooter games do it that are aimed at a younger audience and sometimes even aim for controversy. See Call-of-Duty-type-games' obsession with ideology, esotheric masculinity, "weapon-porn", patriotism etc.

Those things do make for easy and effective marketing, so not featuring them heavily equals active avoidance.

I just like pushing buttons and blowing crap up from a great height. If I want to contemplate the meaning of life and my place in the Universe I defer from DCS.

.....oh, and flying in VR is a massive bonus.
