GPU usage only 50% in VR

Hi everyone!

My PC specs are as follows:

Ryzen 3700x

32GB DDR4 @ 3200 MHz

GTX 1070

Samsung 850 EVO SSD

Samsung Odyssey+ HMD

I am using the VR Low preset and a Steam VR PD of 1.3.

Recently I noticed that my GPU usage is only around 50% (according to the task manager). In single player I get a lot of frames (45+ at all times), in multiplayer I get only 30 FPS (GPU still at 50%, VRAM utilization is almost 8 GB). I am quite certain, that a 3700x should not bottleneck a GTX 1070.

Hence I performed a CPU benchmark, which yielded exceptional results for single threaded performance (2990 points at passmark).

I attached some screenshots from CPU-Z and the benchmark software. Please note that the clock is only so low on the CPU-Z image, because it was in idle. At load the single core clock goes up to 4.4 GHz.

Do you have any ideas how to increase the GPU usage and to gain FPS? :helpsmilie:

Thank you!

FYI, I just ran those tests multiple times to give a baseline.

Single Core Performance

@5.0G ~3030-3050 points

@5.2G ~3130-3150 points

at every other CPU test I fall FAR behind your 3700X due to less Cores and less Cache.

I run DCS at 5G and not 5.2G, so you are basically on par with a 8700k @5G. The 9900k is not that much ahead of the 8700k, it may get 3075-3100 points in my guessing.

Great CPU @ 4.4G

I have disconnected ALL but KB+M usb atm to troubleshoot a BSOD.

Over the weekend I can do a VR run and report back, havent flown VR in half a year LoL.

No, it is 100% not your CPU

to be honest, testing in MP is completely pointless.

please do your testing in a controlled single player environment, if you want to troubleshoot possible hardware defiencies.

if you get your pc to run single player with expected performance you could start comparing it to multi player.

chances are, that MP performance problems are serverside, or otherwise network-related. you should also compare different servers, but please compare them agaisnt a baseline that you established in single player.

Just for everyone interested:

After 2 months of running my XMP3600 kit 4x8GB Corsair, which will NOT XMP on my board, with 3200-14-14-14-36-560-2T without issues I am plagued with BSODs, maybe twice per day, maybe once every 2 days...enough to upset me to the max. I disconnected all USB but KB+M a few days ago because Win indicated a USB problem but I had another BSOD this afternoon when I was away. I reverted back to default Bios, no OC, no XMP, no All Core 4.7G as per Asus XMP, really STOCK as Intel sells it.

Now my Passmark single score is 2637 points !!! FU&% Intel, thos 3700X smoke my CPU in stock-NO-OC settings by a thousand miles.

I am going to go AMD as soon as money allo0000ws. I am SO fed up with Intel and Asus.

AMD all the way, it's superior out of the box w/o any fiddling

GRHHHHHHHHH

So its a VR problem, a little bit of a CPU problem, but really a DCS engine problem. When ever your CPU can't keep up with the VR headset native refresh, frames are locked for smoothing, which loads your GPU less. No CPU available will fix the problem, in DX 11 it seems. This is called ASW (Asynchronous Space Warp) in Rift headsets, and I am unsure of the equivalent name for others. The tomcat actually hammers the GPU (1080ti) in VR, so I'm locked at lower frames with the GPU at 90%+. The CPU problem is something Vulkan should correct for.
