This is a really weird case. Maybe the logs can shed some light on this.

did you try to delete the dcs folder located in the saved game folder ?

(make a backup of it somewhere else first)

Good idea

Yes, deleted everything in saved games folder and everything else related to DCS EXCEPT the registry. There was nothing DCS left on the PC and I was was one doing it through Teamviewer. Now he has to reassign his keystrokes and HOTAS. Thanks for the idea though. :)

The copy protection system makes use of the registry, so maybe that's where the problem is.

Ok, so when we did the complete uninstall, we did not have to activate all of his working jets so that means something didn't get removed (from the registry). So, with the Harrier, with its new protection that phones home to the users account, you are saying they use the registry for that jet/module too? If so, would I just look for the AV-8B keys in the registry and delete them and try installing the jet again? Anyone know where those keys are? :P

Thanks

I think ED needs to add some error handlers so when stuff like this happens it throws a message on the screen that say something like:

Error 13 Contact Technical Support

That way they know what routine or subroutine is where the error is being generated from.

I just checked my registry. The Harrier is not in it, which makes sense as it uses the new copy protection system which got rid of keys and instead is binding the module to your DCS account. So no, the registry is not the problem (sorry for misleading you there). I know you have checked or even removed your firewall/antivirus software and opened ports, but it still seems like a firewall problem for me, because it looks like the firewall is blocking the copy protection system of the Harrier that wants to check online if your module is linked to your DCS account.

Could you check and see exactly which DCS entries are excluded in your firewall? He is running Win10 64 Pro. Maybe a screenshot or just a list of the DSC entries. I am going to look at mine too but maybe there is an entry that has an unusual name that makes it harder to spot.

Thanks

Still seems funny the firewall would cause the game to crash though.

edit: I have DCS and DCS Updater in my Win 10 Pro Firewall. DCS is Private and Public and DCS Updater is Private only. I am positive he does too.

I also only have entries for DCS and the DCS Updater in my firewall. It's a really weird issue you have there and I'm running out of ideas what causes it :dunno:

Yeah, we've been fighting this issue since he bought the Harrier along with a bunch of other jets during the July sale. Thanks for the help and if you think of anything else please post.

Thanks

Well, I guess it's time to learn how to use the Sysinternals tools like process monitor etc. It's been a while since I looked at them but at least I will get to learn the tools for future troubleshooting. It's going to be a while but if I ever figure it out I will post it here. It sure would be easier if I had his computer instead of trying to fix it using Teamviewer. :music_whistling:

  • 2 weeks later...
This is the only jet he has that has the new software protection on it so he is already worried about the future as he wants to buy the FA-18 later. Any other suggestions??

Thanks

A bunch of other modules have been updated to the new copy protection system:

The next modules was migrated to new keyless DRM copy protection system.

  • Nevada
  • Normandy
  • WWII Asset Pack
  • Spitfire
  • Su-33
  • AJS-37 Viggen
  • Mirage-2000

Does he has any of them and if so, do they cause problems now too?

I am afraid to ask him. But I will find out later today. If they all break then that may help figure this out. If his other 3 with the new protection (Viggen and Mirage and Nevada) do not break, then that will tell us something too. Right now I bought 2 expensive books to try to figure out how to figure out how to fix his pc and haven't had much time to read them yet. :P

Thanks

Well so far he is in luck as I think the change is only in the Beta Version and we are running the Stable Version.

Yes, it's onle a beta update so far, but it should come to the stable next week. It will be interesting to see if the modules will brake for him then or not.

Well with his luck they will break too and I will be even more sorry I bought him FC3 for his birthday and then talked him into buying all those other jets. :D I helped him again today and we updated a bunch of drivers (that we tried and failed before using the Windows method. Windows said we were using the best drivers etc) and hoped for the best but still the same. I will keep you posted.

Ok, so it happened. Yesterday the update broke the sim even further in the case of the jets. When he tried to run the sim it starts to load then quits without error message like it did before. I told him to remove the Viggen and the Mirage and Nevada Test Range one at a time and try to start it. He removed the Viggen and no joy. The he removed the Mirage and it worked. So I guess the Nevada TR either didn't get the new protection or it was because we were using the Caucasus map for our flying. I will have him fly with Nevada just to verify. So now he lost 3 jets. :helpsmilie:

Seems like it really is the new copy protection system that is causing troubles. It very much looks like the firewall is blocking it, but as you have already checked everything about it that I can think of, I have no clue what is wrong here :dunno:

I would recommend to contact ED support and create a new support ticket with this new info. Alternatively you could also try to contact Community Manager BIGNEWY here on the forums by PM, as he also deals with technical problems.

Here it's definitely not at the right place, as it's safe to say now that this is not a RAZBAM issue.

Yes, it's definitely the new copy protection system and as they add it to other jets he will just end up with FC3. He has Win10 Pro and pretty much all the same AV and anti spyware protection as me and mine works great. His pc uses a Gigabyte GA-X58-UDR5 Rev 1.0 mother board but that shouldn't matter and the BIOS is the latest they offer. Anyhow, I sent BIGNEWY a PM and we will see if he can help.

Thanks

I wouldn't be suprised if FC3 would get the new copy protection system too eventually. Anyways, pls keep us updated as I'm really curious what the issue there is :)
