Benchmarking software

Please forgive the vagueness of this question but I haven't done benchmarking on my gaming PC before.

Q) What are the best benchmarking applications for gaming systems, what are you using? E.g. I've seen Aida64 mentioned in many benchmarking discussions.

BM software is nice for testing a rig but is of little value if you have very specific games (i.e. DCS) in mind.

You need some kind of stress app to verify stability of your rig, not really to see how well it performs because of this or that BM software.

 

 

Sure, if it scores in the lower 1/3 of the scores in various tests, chances are it will perform poor in DCS and in general. If it scores well in all tests, expect it to "have the chance" to perform well in DCS if tweaked properly.

I wouldn't bother with BM software.There will always be faster PC's then yours.

And then you compare it to what?

Once you're happy with the new performance in DCS, don't look back and certainly don't search for frustration in running BM because that's easy to find.

But it's a good test to make sure you didn't artificially throttle something. But agreed on the general "need" for it.

flying DCS for a couple of hours is the best way to stress test :)

 

it sure beats watching a BM number crunch for hours.

My Rig: AM5 7950X, 32GB DDR5 6000, M2 SSD, EVGA 1080 Superclocked, Warthog Throttle and Stick, MFG Crosswinds, Oculus Rift.

Believe it or not, PUBG (it may be better now) was way more taxing than DCS. I couldn't believe how it was the only program that drew enough resources to tip over my power supply. Cinebench, Prime95, CPUZ etc, Intel's own stress test programs didn't trip up my PSU.

 

 

 

Neither did DCS. But PUBG, damn. Replaced my power supply and everything is fine. But it was about 8+ years old so it was getting up there.

I can pull over 600w when stresstesting, ca. 200+w for CPU at highest OC and AVX codec + some good GPU stresser that pulls ~300w on the GPU. The rest of the wattage goes to 13 fans, pump, LED, harddrives and all the gear that's attached to it. IIRC 612w was my peak consumption.

 

 

Not that I would ever want that on a daily routine, but it's nice to see it can take it. Just those 200w with the CPu make me think. AVX and 5.2G is not what you should do to your 8700k for longer than a couple hours.
