4790k to 8700k anyone?

Recommended Posts

Interested to hear this myself, I've had the thought a few times when I've had the itch to waste some money but I've never been able to rationalize the purchase versus performance...my thought has always been that it would perform the same, and that my GPU (albeit a 1080 Ti) would still remain as the bottleneck.

Well first think of this:

What it the core load on your GFX now, when running DCS?

Mine 4790/1080Ti is running the 1080Ti at around 60~65% Core load, and no matter what Ill turn on/up for the CPU load wont go higher (65-75%).

If Ill overclock my GPU, the load just go down ! If Ill overclock my CPU the Core Load on the GFX is rising.

So Ill know that a better CPU would give me better FPS, and since a 8700K should be able to give a Core Load on the 1080Ti to 98~99%, and thats a Core load gain of 35%. So lets say half that in FPS.. Now my FPS are at 45~55, then plus 17% and end up in 52~64.

Ill will test this the very same day Ill get a 8700K (maybe this summer)...

My system is:

4790K @ 4,8Ghz (up to 5 but not 100% stable), Asus ROG Maimus Formula, 32GB DDR3@2400, EVGA Hydrocopper FTW3 1080Ti, Kingston 512GB M2.2280 NMve. HTC Vive.

The difference between the 8600K/8700K (almost identical performance) is only 20-30% faster depending on game and it some cases even slower than the 4790K, based on a benchmark of 5 non-DCS games.

You should itch to upgrade your graphics card before you itch to upgrade your processing power.

im still running a sandy bridge i-7 2600K at 4.4 so I'd say save your $$$ and just OC the CPU. The mileage i have received from this chipset has absoutely blown me away over the years and completely changed my mindset about jumping at every new upgrade.

MP/SP no problems for me at gorgeous graphic settings. As long as you have a decent GPU and have that 4790k even OC'd a little, you should be just fine where you are at. - mind you i just noted in your sig that you are pushing pixels on a 55" 4k... not sure if your bigger bang is eeking out a bit more CPU speed or looking at a 1080 from your 1070...

Would like to get it to run at 5ghz, but Im not very good at overclocking.. The PC can go to BIOS when CPU is running at 5.1 but cant boot into OS.

BTW got a tiny tiny bit better lower FPS when going from 1080 to 1080Ti (the 1080 burnt out on me). Anyone handy with solder can get it fee..

Good point, for sure. The rationale for me is that my current motherboard is maxed at 16 gb of ram and I was looking into 'future-proofing' a bit by getting another motherboard that had higher RAM capacity. 1151 MB's seemed to be the way to go so I thought, "If I'm going with a new MB, might as well go with a new processor as well... hence the 8700k. If I could, I would get a 1080 ti instead, but I can get a new MB with 64 gb capacity, an 8700k cpu, and more ram for about half the current price of a 1080 ti right now. :-)

Still waiting to hear from somebody who's actually made the 4790k to 8700k transition to speak up. :-)

4790k is a great CPU :)

Overclock the hell out of it and stick to it.

The platform has advantages, NVMe 4x, better USB 3.x etc... but that dont add to DCS.

7700k @ 5G, before that I had a 2600k at 4.8-5G.

The 7700k had also 32GB, the 2600k had 16GB.

I do extensive VMware, so my RAM requirements are not solely based on DCS.

The 7700k was a beast, my son has it now, with a new 144Hz screen, he's loving it !

The 2600k fried...yeah...some CPU's may not run that long when overclocked.

My DIY WC-Loop ran all previous 115x socket systems, GPU is always a Poseidon ( WC-Hybrid )

I always use different I/O for OS and APPs, 2 x SSD or NVMe or more, currently 3. VMware loves it too.

So if your where to guess the gain by going from 4790K to a 8700K, what would your guess be?

Useing same GFX...

BTW, Running alot of VMWare too - but do that on my servers ;)

And yes one drive for OS and one for apps (in my case a total of 3 SSDs and 1 HDD for data).

Mine is a DIY loop if one is looking past my EVGA GFX, wich since my 780 days have been Hydrocoppers.

What Ill base my quess on is, the jump from 980x to 4790K and from 3770 to 4790K.

Which lead me to say 15~18% better framerate and better process time, so lowest FPS will be the thing you lift the most.

yes, lowest fps become higher and more stable.

You can assume that any proper cooled 8700k does 5G, most do more if cooled with water or even delidded. That will really speed up your overall latency, everywhere.

I would epxect maybe 15% more brutal IPC power, but the real deal is better latency, more PCIe lanes for your I/O subsystem ( NVMe then 4x, not 2x ), faster RAM ( 3200 or faster ).

Way easier to oc than a Devil's Canyon, my 7700k was easy, this 8700k is even easier to oc.

Actually, all modern CPU's are easy to oc from the skill side, the harder part is cooling ;)

My 1600x needed 1 click for all cores go 4G, rock solid. Most simple OC I have ever done is that office beast haha, our lil Emailripper.

Since you have a DIY loop, weay to go, delid that sucker and boost it 5+ with 55°C :)

My delidder will arrive next week, been waiting 2 month for this device. It will bring my temps down to 55°C or better from 70°C max at 5.2G in DCS. Volts are high, I can dial in what I want, it spikes up n beyond 1.45v when at 5.2. That's the microcode VID it applies automatically, my choosen Volts are 1.35 but it wont listen.

my tip for RAM and Z370, buy 2 x16GB and not 4x8, try to avoid a 4-ship config if you intend to XMP them high. The more modules the harder it comes and Z370 is infamous for XMP, many many problems. So dont buy 4133 RAM unless you can send them back, good chance they only run way way slower. Keep that in mind ! My own 3600CL16 only runs 3200CL16 w/o issues. any faster means trouble, 4 x 8GB that is.

The 8700k was really not a great processor. It lacks the PCIe lanes that you'll need with more storage devices. If disk access is limiting your DCS performance and causing stutters, then faster storage would be a better option.

Exact same here , watercooled 4.8ghz rock solid cool & stable

Mine is delided, and temps never go past 50°C

What helps there is alot of radiator, have two radiators one 3x120mm and one 3x3x120mm !

So with a water cooled motherboard, GFX, and a delided CPU... Ive should be able to figure out how to get it to run stable. Windows7 and Ill can run stable at 4.8 but windows 10 only allows 4,7 ghz.

Anyone with a good idea what to look at?

Well played some with the PC to day, and hit a kind of 4.9 stable...

Kind of since the uncore side only runs at 4.7.

Just had the onboard GFX on!!! Turned it of, and is now able to boot into windows @5ghz but get a BSD quickly - can start RealBench if uncore is running at 4.6.

This is with a voltage at 1.4 for both Vcore and CPU Cache. No difference up to 1.5V.

Max temp is 73¤C after 4 hours of RealBench StressTest, water do get "warm" at +6.2¤C over ambient temperture. So nothing is getting hot.

that is about max for a 4790k, it wont go higher reliably.

if it still is too slow, sell it and go 8700k-5.2g, 1080ti-32gb-nvme thats max perf as of today in ipc
