Best source of information on hardware?

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to find a roadmap for PC technology, Im currently saving for a new PC and am clouded by all the jargon and info.

My thoughts are by the time I am ready (post september 2018) there will be a new chipset running PCIe3?? which will run a new Intel chip and more than likely a 1080Ti upgrade.

Google is useless as there are so many articles on everything I start losing my mind at Coffee lake, Kaby Lake, Ice Lake.....then they mix up the dates with an article dated 2 weeks old says to look out for the i7 7800k release in October...2017.

Of course you are welcome to be that source of information if you keep up with all this!

Any other places you go to fish for all the info i need?

PCI Express 3 has been on the market for a long time, it isn't something new. There are indeed coming new Intel Chips in Q3 namely Cascade Lake and new variants of Coffee Lake, in Q4 Cascade Lake-X Chips.

Those are for workstations and servers though, you want to be aiming for 8700K and 8600K when building a new rig for DCS as of now. Those are for Socket LGA 1151 Mainboards.

With "1080 Ti Upgrade" I guess you mean the new Nvidia GPU Generation which will release in July/August the earliest. The "Ti" cards come out about 6 to 9 months after that.

I meant PCIe 4 sorry.

So the 8700k will be relevant for another few years (as far as is known)? What about the 14nm? chips I heard about or are these the server ones you mentioned?

Yes, especially regarding DCS. I mean those are able to hit the 5 Gigahertz with some overclocking.

Those are 14nm already, Intel is improving 14nm a bit with the next release(s) but as someone looking to build a rig for DCS this shouldn't interest you too much.

8700k and 8600k just came on the market in Q4 2017.
