Is this worth the buy?

I actually liked this jet ... but it still has little missing things that irk me somewhat:

  • I cant induce failures on demand (to excersise the Emergency Procedures).
  • Some important keybinds for the radio and gunsight dont work correctly
  • There is no livery template available for user created liveries, so you only have the liveries that Razbam provides.
  • It has only Instant action missions (10) but no standard Missions.
  • DCS doesnt have period-appropiate assets (ground and air units), so it's hard to edit your own realistic missions.

On the plus side, it has:

  • Several custom cockpits (wear/no wear, engilsh/russian) created by the developer.
  • Excellent training, 10 missions by Baltic Dragon
  • Excellent Campaign, also by BD (another 10 missions)
  • It's system's complexity fits nicely in-between the MiG-15 and the MiG-21 .. I practiced with the 15 before getting the 19 and it was nice to experience the changes from one generation into the next.

It also seems like the developer has not updated this plane over the last several DCS updates ... take a look at the Changelogs and see for yourself:

Excellent campaign? What's it like? With the mirage, it's fully voice acted. Is it similar with the MiG-19?

Yes, it is like the one on the Mirage ... but the voice acting is all in russian language, with english subtitles ... for me it is more realistic this way, but I know that there is people put off by that :)

This is the initial briefing text, for the situation at the beginning of the Campaign:

Comrades - Pilots.

We have a situation.

It seems that the New Year celebrations have been used by a well organised group of traitors from the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. In the early hours of this morning we lost all contact with the units stationed there and the communication lines were severed.

It is no secret that under the decentralisation ordered by Comrade Khrushchev, local party members of Georgian origin have consolidated too much power in their hands. They were also drafting an overwhelming number of soldiers coming from the Republic rather than from elsewhere, which could explain their initial success in their coup.

Most of our air units were stationed in Senaki - Kolkhi (2 squadrons of MiG-19s. 2 squadrons of MiG-21s) and Kutaisi (another MiG-21 squdron and a squadron of Tu-95s) as part of our defences against NATO units from Turkey.

The command has also deployed two brand new SA-2 batteries close to Tbilisi. These may be active and could be in the hands of loyalists or separatists, we cannot tell for sure.

and this is the tasking for that first mission:

You will be leading a flight of four fighters. Your wingmen are currently on parking spots 11 to 13 on the other side of Tupolev bombers.

Your task is to take off from Mozdok and fly south towards Vladikavkaz. Before turning south, you will push button 2 on your radio and then contact AMETHYST, your Ground Control Intercept station, located in Zavodskoy. They will guide you for the rest of the flight.

You will get as far as Mukhrani NDB at 520 kHz. There you will turn south - east towards Tibilisi.

Your orders are to make a low pass over Vaziani airport and assess situation there. You will also report back on any fighting taking part in the capital.

Vaziani has two squadrons of MiG-15s, it is likely that these have fallen into the hands of separatists. Follow the Ground Control station commands before engaging.

NAVIGATION

You will take off and check in with Amethyst on your first turn south towards Vladikavkaz. You will then set your ARK-5P to Mukhrani at 520 kHz. Once there, you will turn to 122 and fly towards Vaziani.

On the way back fly heading 350 towards VLADIKAVKAZ.

For MOZDOK, far beacon is at 525.00 kHz. Near one is at 1065 kHz.

RADIO

Channel 1 is Mozdok Airfield at 137.000.

Channel 2 will be the main channel used during the mission. It is tuned to 130.000.

Channel 3 is BESLAN TOWER, which is your divert airport.

WEATHER

Strong snow storm and winds plus fog. If visibility remains too low, when over Mukhrani beacon 6th flight is authorized to abort mission and return to base.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Remember to switch to CH02 after takeoff.

And here is a video of Mission 2 on the Campaign:

Relevant to my interests.

Hows the FM these days?

How bad are the gun-sight issues. I mainly don't use keybinds, preferring to click things in VR.

Hows the radar model?

Any other issues with systems modeling?
