Gun convergence

Hi all,

Just wondered if it was going to be possible to adjust the gun convergence in the Spitfire? Otherwise I am wondering if there is any point to the ability to adjust the gun sight?

Hasn't been any word on adjusting the harmonization. I'd guess probably not though.

 

The gun sight adjustments are for both range and wingspan which is related to harmonization but not exactly the same thing. From playing CLoD I never bothered too much with the range - I just set it equal to the convergence setting. Then would adjust the wingspan based on what the target was to try and hit them at the ideal range.

It can make a massive difference in CLoD - in the Spitfire and Hurricane anyway. Would be good to be able to, ideally in the P-51 too - but I know that has been talked about. Would just hope that this would be something in development.

I think more knowledgeable people than me might have commented before that the way it's done in CLoD isn't completely realistic. Anyway as far as I know the standard harmonization that the RAF used for the Mk IX was 250 yards which is fine for general use. I would expect that we'll get whatever the standard harmonization pattern was as just about all pilots would have been expected to fly with those settings.

I assume same as other WWII birds in DCS, you can screw with the harmonization via a config file. Chances are you aren't going to come up with something better than the RAF though.

Unless it was able to be done in the cockpit, you wont be able to do it aside from as mentioned about, in config files. It will be adjusted to the most commonly used settings by pilots back then, same as other WWII modules from ED.

You mean the settings in the options menu? Those arent very realistic as far as the real trim tabs, and they are mostly for making up for shortcomings on our plastic flight controls ;)

 

I dont use them.

Me neither truth be told, however my point stands if we can find historical non standard convergence could they be implemented as a choice?

While we are on the topic of guns, what will be the loadout for the MG and cannon belts?

 

The normal ammunition capacity was 120 rpg per cannon and 350 rpg for the .303s. Purely from memory, the normal convergence for 2 TAF Spitfires was ~ 300 yards (? confirmation pending...).

Sure, as always, if you can find substantial proof that it was a common thing for pilots to have and adjust, then I am sure ED would look at it.

 

Gun convergence was fixed according to RAF doctrine.

It initially was set for 400 yds Battle of Britain but was subsequently changed to 250 yds.

 

However, some senior pilots had their mechanics change their personal convergence to closer ranges - 100 yds.

 

Tracer worked as a guide to aiming but with .303 calibre it burned on the way to the target and was depleted at longer ranges thus losing some effectivemess.

 

What is more important was the loadout. A mix of some tracer and ball early on but after the BOB, incendiary ammo such as the DeWilde was introduced and included in the belting.

 

NOTE: With the DeWilde it is IMPORTANT to ensure that there is a flash on impact with the skin as this was the main way in which it ignited. It is not a tracer but used contact to become molten and penetrate hot. It was extremely effective. It resembled small orange sparklers all over the target.

 

For the .303 they tried AP but it proved innefective as it would only penetrate the skin and not have enough energy to damage underlying components. Therefore withdrawn from service!!

 

But, please explore the loadout of the 20mm Hispano cannons because that was another issue. With the larger shell, AP and incendiary did extroadinary damage.

 

Sound: The sound of the .303's is similar to "Heavy fabric being ripped" Quote.

I thought that ball rounds and observer rounds .303 were no longer used by RAF fighters after early war and that incendiary and AP (50/50%) was the standard loadout once armour protection was used more on aircraft of both sides.

I don't think it would be historically correct to see .303 ball and observer rounds in use by RAF Spitfires Mk IX over France. Any experts out there to confirm this?

No point in observer rounds as they do no damage and strikes can be observed by incendiary rounds, so observer rounds were not needed.

Please don't tell me DCS are going to give us useless observer rounds and ball rounds in the Mk IX Spitfire over France!

Sorry if I have got the wrong end of the stick about this (this ammunition stuff is a bit confusing, LOL), but hope someone with some proper knowledge could put me at ease. Thanks in anticipation.

The Spitfire gunsight is pretty straight forward, you need to adjust only 2 rings, the base (wing span) and the range ring. To set those rings properly you need to know only 2 things, your opponent wing span (Base ring) and the range of your guns harmonization or convergence ie where in space the bullet will converge.

 

Once both rings are set you only have to shot once the aircraft wings fit inside the sight symbol ( the 2 horizontal line each side of the gunsight.)

 

 

Knowing your convergence is primordial to use your gun to it's maximum effect.

 

On the subject of gun harmonization they're is multitude of books, bio or historical research that tell story where pilots had there armourer or engineer had there convergence adjust and change from the manufacture. Bio of Malan or Beurling come in mind.

 

 

Here a documentary on George Beurling @ 28:21 it explain how Beurling had is convergence change by his mechanic. I know it's only a History Channel documentary but there is plenty of reference about the subject

I'm very interested in investigating this as I have played with the convergence on my Spits guns in Single Player and it makes a world of difference. With the current settings, I feel like I can't hit anything unless I almost fly into the target in front of me and most of the time can't get that close.

In the case that Krupi mentioned of the out of cockpit settings for the 109 & 190, is that something that proof was provided for or just part of the simulation? If proof was provided, would you be able to point me in the direction of this? I really want to get a solid idea of what would pass as "substantial proof".

I thought that ball rounds and observer rounds .303 were no longer used by RAF fighters after early war and that incendiary and AP (50/50%) was the standard loadout once armour protection was used more on aircraft of both sides.

I don't think it would be historically correct to see .303 ball and observer rounds in use by RAF Spitfires Mk IX over France. Any experts out there to confirm this?

No point in observer rounds as they do no damage and strikes can be observed by incendiary rounds, so observer rounds were not needed.

Please don't tell me DCS are going to give us useless observer rounds and ball rounds in the Mk IX Spitfire over France!

Sorry if I have got the wrong end of the stick about this (this ammunition stuff is a bit confusing, LOL), but hope someone with some proper knowledge could put me at ease. Thanks in anticipation.

I was doing some research on the DCS Spit and came across your post and seeing as how I was already doing this breakdown for my own reasons I thought you may want it as well based on your post.

 

So here is the current DCS Spitfire ammunition loadout translated from numbers into types of ammunition, so you know what exactly is in the belt and in what order. As you can see they did keep the Observer rounds and like you, I agree they are useless however DCS does have them configured and tagged as HE rounds in the coding, with explosives inside. So, maybe they will be more effective on here.

 

So here you go:

 

Hispano MkII x 2 (Both cannons are configured with the same ammo belt)

 

3, 1, 3, 2 = HE, AP, HE, HET
