Budget - Mid Range GPU Selection

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am determining a possible build, and will be seeing what sort of deals come up for black Friday. I'd appreciate some advise please.

I recently purchased the hornet, and my specs are below the minimum specs, but it does run (you may have seen my other thread).

I have three 60hz 24", 1920x1200 screens. This is what I intend to run with. I am not 100% commited as to whether I'll run all 3 as a standard view, or if I'll go to one screen for main view with MFD etc on another screen.

I am currently considering the Ryzen 5 3600, 32gb RAM, SSD for OS, another for games.

I am reasonably set on the 3600 at this point in time, unless an intel happens to drop price more than the 3600.

My main question is around the GPU.

If someone by chance happens to have a selection guide to the effect of GPU1 > GPU2 > GPU3 then this may help.

I am tossing up the value of me spending $350 or $600 (Australian) for a 1920x1200 scenario.

In that price range, I think I'm comparing:

  • AMD / Nvidia

  • 5700 / 2060 super (~$600)

  • 590 / 1660 (~$350)

  • and there is the 1660 super for around $400

So perhaps for me the questions would be:

  1. Is there any value for my scenario (1920x1200) going to a 5700/2060 super?

  2. Is the 590 or 1660 better for DCS?

  3. How much better is 1660 vs 1660 super?

  4. Is the 5700 or 2060 super better for DCS?

Once I determine the GPU, I'll put a build list together and then probably discuss motherboards...

I'm comfortable overclocking the CPU, but never OC'd a GPU before, so not sure I'd go ahead with that.

thanks :)

I am in a similar boat, having to buy a new card since old gtx-780 died some months ago:

I see it this way:

A GTX-1660 super or GTX-1660ti is pretty much the same performance with only 6gb of vram, ok for all types of games, but not DCS, I wouldn't go lower than these models.

Any of the AMD RX-580 - RX-590 are ok for general 1920x1080 gaming, but not for DCS as they are slower than Nvidia GTX-1660 series of cards,

A RTX-2060 Super or a RX-5700 with 8gb of vram would be the bare minimum performance wise for playing DCS (needed for larger resolutions or triple screen especially).

A RTX-2070 super would be the one to get for all round performance in most games and DCS (Shame they are so damn expensive though $800 - $1100, heavily priced gouged).

As for the RX-5700X would also be ok, but my opinion on AMD drivers and their general software leaves a bit to be desired, and these cards look good on paper spec wise, but can suffer from thermal throttling from poor cooling, hence they don't reach there full speed as specified.

If you want to compare quickly the relative performance of all GPU's in relation to each other try this link below.

thanks guys.

The 5700 can be made a 5700xt with a soft mod it seems, so that makes it a bit better. No way I am going above a 5700/2060 super with my budget (which is actually currently $0, just hoping to convince my wife of increasing that haha)

I think the 5700 with soft mod to xt is probably where I'm at. Otherwise the 1660. But if I'm spending $350-400, almost double the performance for another $200 seems to make sense to spend the extra.

I run 4 1920x1080 monitors with the 4th being for the MFD and other extractions from the sim and can maintain a pretty steady 60 fps with vsync on. Check sig for system details.

thanks, txmtb, but the 2070 is way over budget for me :)

Get the best one you can afford chrisgrind, messing around with settings less and playing more. I had the older 1070 for awhile which was good, even at 1440P.

This would be nice for DCS with 8 Gb ram

thanks. if I go to the $600 range, then I was considering the 2060s or the 5700, which can overclock to xt, for an extra $29. Apart from everyone saying DCS runs better on nvidia, the 5700xt beats it in most areas..though perhaps that is the area that DCS needs. I'll try to dig up what it is that DCS likes about Nvidia

I running a 1070 now . At 1080p it ran excellently with 2x msaa in addition to 1.5 ssaa . I run my rift on it now , and find it adequate for that as well .

It would come back to the drivers you use.

To have DCS run the smoothest at max settings and be able to flick Track IR all over the place and be smooth at 60 fps. I roll back to the older 425.31 NV drivers. No idea why these run the best for me...

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello, I am new to DCS and will build a PC

I am from Mac world :)

I want to run DCS and probably other flight sim.

So, my thoughts are for a Ryzen 5 3600, ssd, for GPU : RX5700XT or RXT2060Super?

(Other alternatives? I want a nice good experience)

Nvidia or AMD? Am so confused with all those reviews etc...want to know from real user

Will also get a 1440p monitor . As I understand it, FreeSync is pretty commun...if Nvidia, G-Sync seems to be scarce and expensive...am I right ?

Motherboard...X570? Ot à X470? Or à B450? Does it matter ?

Thanks

P.s. first post here, hope it is ok in this thread...if not, I will gladly post it in the correct tread/forum

Consider saving some money with a b450 board , and getting a 3600x with it . The x is effectively overclocked , so you need not worry about a higher-priced board to OC . PCIE 4 capability of x570 boards won't be useful for a while yet , and at US $100 , a B450 Tomahawk will serve you well and will not be too painful to replace in 3-4 years if needed .

Welcome to the forum RacingMik

Take a look at this recent post by BitMaster (3600/3600X/3700X CPU with a moderate B450 board)

To give you some idea about performance. I run a 1080ti, this can hold 60fps on high settings at 1440p. Many here lock the sim to 60 to smooth out track ir panning. If you can, grab the 2070 super or better for 1440p and should be good for 60 fps on mostly high settings.

Under this card and I would stay at 1080p personally.

Hey Racingmilk,

Svsmokey already covered the motherboard.

For the GPU rather than being overwhelmed with all the reviews it's best to check an objective benchmark of performance like this one. None of the popular Youtubers or gaming sites do specific DCS benchmarks unfortunately.

https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

The 5700XT and the 2060 Super are very very close in performance. So it's pretty much a coinflip. Go with whichever you can get the best price on and has the best warranty. So be sure and check the fine print.

Welcome to DCS. :pilotfly:

I ended up getting permission from the boss, so I'm waiting on delivery of 3600 with 5700xt.

I went with x570 as I decided with the money I was spending, an extra $70aud was worth it...i think in USA the b450 is heeeeaps cheaper though, in which case the b450 tomahawk max (emphasis on the max - there are two versions) is supposedy the best board on a budget

x570 gets you pci4 which is largely useless in todays world..but it may give you a better upgrade path in say 3 years if you update your GPU.

if you get the 5700xt, dont get the aus tuf gaming...its a lemon. I got choices down to the gigabyte gaming OC (which i bought) and the red devil.

if you're not in a rush, I should get my bits next week (They are stuffing me around...sigh)

the other catch with the b450 is the RAM speed is probably less than 3600, ryzen apparently shine with faster RAM, so you may want to weigh up that cost extra...but that said, you'll need to then spend more on RAM, so the cost does go up.

It's not only FAST RAM but you also need a TIGHT latency.

3200 CL14 would be great, you can try to tweak it to CL12 even for example.

or

3600 CL16 and try to tweak it to CL14.

In all cases, try to get modules based on Samsung B-die, those overclock best and allow tighter timings either out of the box or with some increased voltage.

Ask the seller if what you intend to buy has Samsung B-die.

If you want to learn about RAM overclocking/tighter latency with Ryzen, watch the vids from Actually Hardcore Overclocking. He#s the guy for that special case. He's got plenty of vids online and dont be afraid about the length and overkill on info...after the tenth, or twentieth video you'll get the hang ;)

Finally, I bought my kit ( aerus B450 pro with WiFi, 16gb ram, MSI RX5700XT evoke)

Built it ;)

Installed driver

Downloaded the DCS !! Ready to learn !

I started it this morning and wow, the graphics are fantastic!

So now, have to begin the very slow learning process hahahaha

Thank you all :)

Yesterday I ordered a 1660 super.

I think it has a good price/performance ratio.

Considering I used to have a Radeon R9 270, which also worked reasonably ok for DCS (not great but ok), it's a significant upgrade.

I'll post something once I get it.
