And it rarely got used because the cannon took up valuable fuel storage space.

I read an interesting article in an old magazine series (by old I mean 20-30 years), 'WARPLANE', which actually detailed the RAFs Phantom air to air gunnery practices (using the cannon pod) in one issue as well as a step-by-step of an intercept of a Tu-95 Bear. Very cool read.
