Lightbulb How much FPS did you say O.O ?????

For the peeps, who don´t have a super-PC, but still want DCS to look and perform nice. An alternative approach.

(read Video description)

You are welcome. I hope it does help you gents out there.

Oh, and after reading all the details in the video description.. IF you want to see bandits really far out, just "uncheck" FXAA.

Shown with 1060 GTX 6GB - i7-2600K @ 4.2Ghz - 16GB RAM / Windows 7 Professional - DCS World Version 2.5.1 as of 14th May 2018

Knowing (tracking) the performance and memory "eaters" in the settings; and finding right compromises in context to what is really asked for (of TACTICAL ! graphical importance), one can find a good balance between good FPS (smooth game-play, especially with Track IR and VR) and the appearance generally. Nevertheless, the "eye eats too".

1) The in-game graphics settings are visible in the video. Note: An-isotropic Filtering is OFF in-game, but ON 16x in the nVidia panel. I noticed, this works better for me (less shimmering).

2) The ReShade shader-effects used ONLY in my case are as follows: see picture: https://i.imgur.com/9hYcIF4.jpg

3) The ReShade configuration is as follow (a well and extensvie tested tweaks for SMAA and FXAA, as they "anti-aliase" the frame AFTER it is processed (opposite to MSAA used by DCS) and have no performance-loss impact (or minute).

*** *** *** *** Code begin **** (your reshade config .ini or .txt file aka profile) - [Enable ReShade inside DCS = LEFT SHIFT + Q]

4) OPEN the "SMAA.fxh" file with notepad ++ and edit line 305, 310, 315, 320 and 342 from

#define SMAA_THRESHOLD 0.xx
to
#define SMAA_THRESHOLD 0.00

and inside "SMAA.fx" file change line 30 from

ui_min = 0.05; ui_max = 0.20; ui_step = 0.01;
to
ui_min = 0.00; ui_max = 0.20; ui_step = 0.01;

5) nVidia control panel settings in 2 pictures: (Note: you can LIMIT your frame-rate to 60 or 66 FPS using the latest Nvidia Profile Inspector (frame limiter), if you only have a 60Hz monitor. It will prevent performance spikes and deliver constant frame-rates AND save your graphics cards from wasted energy and heat (-15°C in my case). Instead of enabling V-sync, this method combined with "maximum pre-rendered frame-rates = 1" allows you to prevent "screen tearing", yet "limit" (control" your max frame-rates) with less "input-lag" (V-sync). Funny enough, i do ONLY see "screen-tearing", IF V-Sync is ON. Don´t aske me why that is.

Last Note:

FPS would have been even higher, but i was streaming it with OBS (lost a FPS couple there). Oh, and after reading all the details in the video description.. IF you want to see bandits really far out, just "uncheck" FXAA in ReShade. If you STILL don´t like your FPS .. go down from EXTREME to HIGH visibility range.

Another test/finding:

https://youtu.be/_NvO12vCDGo?t=1196

YouTube did not fully render it yet (freshly uploaded, not 1440p yet or and it might not be as clear as on screen) .. but around 20:00 min in, i can see from 45-50km (25-32nm) .. visually 7 planes.. only using FXAA Reshade Anti-Aliasing with unique settings

SMAA off, MSAA off and only FXAA (Reshade) with

Code:
[FXAA.fx]
Subpix=0.000000
EdgeThreshold=0.390000
EdgeThresholdMin=0.000000

(based or preset in 1st post)

This looks really great, thanks for posting. It may be too early to tell, but would this tool need to be fussed with after each update?

Tried to get some of my 104th buddies to try Reshade back when 2.5 first came out, but it's 'too scary' lol

wanna give it a go, but cant get to the panel when in game, shift Q does not work, neither does the F2, I have a fn/activate for the F numbers.
is there a way to access the program out of game to change bindings?
