FNG on the A10C, haz questions.

Hi everyone, I started a thread in the Input & Output section (when I thought it was a TrackIR issue) and eventually the conversation moved over into something that needs specialist A10 knowledge so I've started a thread here in the (desperate) hope that someone can answer.

Can someone explain why my HUD pitch ladder and TVV moves off to the left or right of my HUD despite no control inputs or head movement and my being centred in front of my monitor? (and centred in TrackIR)

If I turn to a particular heading (apparently random) the pitch ladder and TVV centre but otherwise it's off to the left or the right. This screenshot was taken in the "Free Flight over Black Sea region" Mission and this has always occured in variations of that mission i.e. Ramp Start.

On a separate note, where are all the tutorial missions I keep hearing about?

p.s. on the off chance that someone here isn't familiar with the term FNG, it used to be a slang USAF (and others) for the Freakin' New Guy aka Noob. (I may have taken some poetic license with the F)

Is there any way to disable that function? Surely it's purely a Nav thing? Correct me if I'm wrong but it shows aircraft heading vs. track towards a waypoint? Or in other words, it shows what heading I need to fly in order to reach my waypoint with winds aloft?

The TVV will show where you're truthfully going as in if you put it on a building you will fly into that building. If where you're going isn't where you're facing isn't really the marker's fault. To force its position to the center of the display would be to make it display info contrary to that purpose. Certain airplanes have functions to do that (F-16, F/A-18) but not the A-10.

You should also be aware that HUD is a columnated display. Moving your head around doesn't change where the symbols are with respect to infinity. If some green mark is on a distant mountain then there's nothing you can do with your eye location to make that not the case.

The A-10 has other guidance to get you to navigate toward a waypoint like the "captain's bars" on the heading tape. Turn to that directed heading and you will be heading toward your waypoint with all the wind corrections and the like. There are fully precise ways to do all navigation tasks with your HUD stripped of TVV/pitch ladder or even completely off.

Main menu, Training, A-10C... should see 14 lessons Introduction through Countermeasures.

Frederf, thank you for so clear an explanation. Very much appreciated :)

In my defence, I'm working my way through the manual, various guides and watching videos. The learning curve is more of wall :D

I just did the runway start version of the same mission and for some reason my TAD was just wireframe with no map. Any idea why?

certain sectors of the map don't have a "max zoom" ground texture. make TAD SOI and press DMS down to zoom out and you will see the color map.

...and then in the upper left corner of the TAD, change the setting to MAN for the map and the style won't change as you zoom in/out.

Thank you all for the answers :)

...there will be more questions.

I have PPL(A) and a fair bit of glider time (including aerobatics), this is a whole other level!

Yeah, TAD has auto map scale for the chart background or manual or off. With manual you can pick the chart layer that you want. Chart coverage varies by the scale layer. Pretty commonly I'll pick a manual layer or even off. Declutter can be valuable. TAD has up to three very configurable clutter sets and you might be surprised at how much depth of options the TAD has.

You will soon discover that this module is the most deep, precise and realistic out there so far. Someday we can dream the Hornet reach the same level of deep.

It usually take months to be able to fly the Hog properly with all the systems. I've been flying it for years and I still discover some new options from time to time.
