Free Normandy Map Update Coming

In May 2017, Urga Media released their DCS: Normandy 1944 map for DCS World. The map focused on the landing beaches of Normandy and points south to encompass the breakout period in June 1944. The entire map also includes portions of southern England and areas outside the landing and breakout area to the south at a lower level of detail. The total map size is 267 x 348 kilometers and includes many period specific buildings, bridges, vehicles, windmills, and other objects that populate the map. This has been the ideal map for World War II combat and even low-altitude helicopter flying.

 

Since the release and a large update to this map, Urga Media has been very busy to two primary items: The DCS: Syria map and another large, free, update to the Normandy map!

 

This free Normandy map update will include the following:

  • Improved quality of ground textures (fields and urban areas).
  • Improved quality of the noise textures. This will be particularly evident at low altitudes.
  • Improved quality of the coastline, both in Normandy and along the English coast.
  • Processing of fields and city vector data to use new DCS World terrain technologies.
  • Improved quality of the rivers and lakes.
  • Improved quality of roads.
  • Increased the number of unique objects and scenes.
  • Optimization and improved the look of the trees and forests.
  • Optimization of map for virtual reality performance.

 

We have no planned release date at this time.

I'm happy that an update has been announced!

 

Doesn't change my plans, though. Syria map for me at the earliest *after* an update to the Normandy map has been done.

Unless by then another map has caught my attention ;)

Yeah, sure, or maybe they just did what was said that was to be done but you all can wait a minute before starting the bashing, who knows, right?

where was said? point me there because I haven't seen it. The only thing I found was that the optimization was scheduled for the maps except Normandy...

I wish the word "Free" would stop being thrown around like they're doing us a favor. Its called Product Support. It wasn't kept current or to a usable level where the DCS specs allowed it to have decent FPS.

Could you please put the same pressure on Microsoft to support Win-7 Pro ?

I liked that much more than Win-10, but they've stopped patching it.

Weak argument:

 

1/ It's as if you'd clung to former DCS 1.5 Caucasus theatre instead of embracing DCS 2.5 brand new one.

2/ Win-10 was a temporarily free update for Win-7. biggrin.gif

- Other maps are already feature complete, check

- Relies on map changes, not game/engine, check

Having FPS at a usable level, by your own published specs btw, is not a "feature". Its a service obligation. Normandy wasn't properly optimized and had plenty of people post up how poorly it ran. But yet it sat, untouched, until now.

 

I'll be happy to see what all changes. It will determine whether or not I purchase Syria.

What are you talking about? It's listed as a free update to Normandy as well. You are not understanding the logic. All the work, including the VR optimization, is extra beyond what as promised for the map.

No, feature complete as in the map was completed, end of work, no more to be done. BUT now they are going back to update it. This wasn't promised or required. Again, the map was feature complete.

One day, you'll be on the receiving end of a broken product that did not meet standards and you couldnt use it as is. The builder will say, but its complete. Then, you'll understand how we've been feeling.

No one is saying the quality of the map was on par with ED's, but also ED invented the tools and had much more time at them. Normandy is hardly broken though, that is just being overly dramatic. I have been flying the many cool campaigns released and coming for the map, and have been having a blast. I think that would be hard to do on a broken map, and I am very excited for it to be improved even more.

Sith, I appreciate you get a lot of rubbish thrown your way and you're required to be somewhat defensive (being on payroll and all), but can you just accept for once that others have different experiences than you, and just because yours is fine, doesn't mean other people's are.

 

Normandy runs ok on my rig, but it doesn't perform as well as others.

 

For people with worse machines than ours, that can run Cauc fine but not Normandy, the broken claims do have a ring of truthfulness to them.

 

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what the updates bring.

I think people are getting upset for the word "free" because seems like ED is doing us a favor updating the normandy, because is a 3th parties decision to update or not their modules. With this I think many people will think twice before they will buy something that is not made directly by ED team, seems a lottery... you'll never know if will be supported or not

It was matter of the time the update comes.

But that was matter of the size of the update (upgrade in this case).
