ANY TIPS

So, being fairly new to BS, for the past few weeks I have been flying the shooting range mission, just to get a feel of the old girl, last night it was time to go on patrol, which meant the enemy shot back, which meant, I went down. So whats the best way to engage? fast and low, ambush, or high and slow, and what distance if I used that tactic, thanks in advance.

Stay out of manpad range. Use the reach of you Vikhrs. Fire them from maximum range whenever possible. I assume you mean the "Patrol" single mission? There's plenty of mountains from where to ambush and escape. It's also easy to keep out of enemy gun range when the missile threat is eliminated. Your cannon's effective range is 3 km and from a stable hover you can nail targets from almost 4 km. No need to get shot at in the first place.

Few I'd use during my first frustrating hours ;)

  • tanks can shoot at you with the big gun!
  • learn about vortex ring and intersecting blades
  • manpads:
    • there's very little you can do to actually avoid manpads as you don't know where they are ;)
    • you are in the target area = manpads are there
    • the max range of Vikhrs is ~8 km where usually you're relatively safe. Anywhere below 5 km and you'll have to use flares

[*]use flares preemptively (before you spot launches) - read about UV-26 on the forums; there are UV-26 programs that allow you to use flares economically ; search for posts by users: Frederf, Strongharm

[*]newbies stand no chances against AH-64s engaging them with Hellfires. Run!

With a small addendum - You are driving a 100% All-Terrain IFV... that is NOT armored. :D

:megalol:

Aye - that's vitally important :)

Oh yes - do not target-fixate. Head-on-a-swivel at all times. Shoot, run away and reposition for the next attack, preferably always from suitable cover. Trust me - failing to adhere to this will get a GBU-10 dumped on your head when the A-10 drivers saunter along to join the sandbox - that's when the Shark turns into a Guppy.

As Bucic said, the Kamov is not armoured - a GBU-10 hurts!

In an environment filled with even just IFVs its armor matters as much as my snickers armour :D No need to bring up the GBUs.

Your snickers can withstand 23mm cannon fire? Dear lord you must have a lively digestion. :D

I see you guys got carried away :P

Sobek, apparently you're a lab / synthetic tests guy. I, as a peasant, am more practical. What you said to be true... Ka-50 would have to face a mujahedeen armeed with a 23mm rifle. IFVs field automatic cannons and that's many olives.

Another example:

Even tank 12.7 mm machine gun is able to render any combat helicopter "combat-disabled" or cause engine fire if heli passes near the tank in a reckless manner.

My firsts well succeded flights, was on Quick Start mission...

I always stays out of range from Manpads, until i taked out them with Vikhrs...

After this, i open the hunt season. :megalol:

On this mission i shoot always near woods, at left of Ka50 starts..

I never stay fixed at same point..

Fix a visual terrain reference for navigation, made feel shoots and go to a orbit.

I don´t know advanced INU use for fixed a position yet...

I flew on VFR rulez...

Keep your situational awareness.

Don't go right in, thinking that's the only enemy around.

There's a good chance you'll find a few nasty surprises

hidden nearby. So, scan your surroundings constantly.

While we're at scanning... I'd sweep (visual, then visual+shkval further out)

from under my belly out, not the opposite. The simple reason being it's better to miss something further out than something that is close to you.

On few occasions a fast moving BMP got to close to me while I was occupied with engaging as much targets from a moving column, from a hover at, what it initially was, a safe distance...

Ah, good point, this is a dilemma I have, when I consider how realistic the sim plays, I feel i am cheating having the enemy labels switched on, is it best to get used to flying without labels at this early stage, to prevent you from becoming dependent at a later stage. Thanks for all the input.

What I'd say, as far as training goes, is to fly without labels, but always save the track - and then activate labels during the watching of that track. Then you can see how well your understanding of the battlefield agreed with reality, and help you identify things you need to train.

Achieving a good SA really is the hardest thing in combat flying, and don't be surprised if this takes more effort to train than "just" learning to fly the aircraft.

What a good idea! and I quite understand your point about the SA, but this is quite good news, i find there is always a reward for practice and perseverance, in the long run anyway, thank you.

Plenty of scouting. Rushing into a target area will usually get me killed. Keep (what you believe to be) a safe stand-off range from the hot area while using eyeballs and Shkval to get an overview of targets and threats. Same thing with A-10C.

You are probably not spotting all the threats (e.g. manpads can be quite hard to see, some units are hidden by terrain or buildings), so need to think about vector of attack, contingency plans, opportunity for using terrain etc. to defend, and keeping maximum range for weapons release.
