right now I'm waiting for ANY new maps... I hope they release a tactical map with the release.. like TC-1.

With the Nevada map, just look at sites like skyvector.com. It has all of the aviation charts for the US as well as airfield charts. It also has basic IFR/VFR charts for the rest of the world.

Maybe it has been covered in a different post?? Are there any plans for a working air to ground radar??

If an aircraft needed it, I am sure they would do it, for example the Hornet, but not really dependant on DCS 2.0/EDGE that I am aware of.

Hopefully everything in NTTR is correct to the real world charts (nav aids, radio freqs, etc.) so we don't have to make them like we did for the current map.

Oh no you didn't, SiTh! What was wrong with my post? :P

DCS 2 and EDGE.... new maps... features listed in the first post, so much to talk about that is on topic, CA and what its future is for for another thread... note in the first thread as well... the part about heavily moderated... ;)

I do have a question: since McCarren International airport will be integrated into the NTTR map will there be civilian traffic added for this, or will there be an option to add AI civilian aircraft at some point? How will this be handled? McCarren is a legitimately busy airport ranked 24th in the world. Perhaps this has already been addressed… in that case can someone link me to the post. Thanks!

The focus on the NTTR map is training missions such as red flag. I doubt that much effort will go into modeling civilian traffic, least not at release. EDGE and 2.0, while bringing a lot, isnt a magical update that will change everything, sure it will allow things to be changed easier down the line (I would hope, and by easier I mean easier than 1.0), but one shouldnt expect stuff out of the scope of the project. I hope things like ATC revamp and such can be looked at down the line once the dust settles on 2.0, but dont expect more out of it than what they list in the OP.

No, DCS 2.0 will not support Direct X 9.

Not really a case of "keeping" Dx10, since DCS has never used Dx10.

As for what Dx11 does: it not only offers potential performance boosts, especially for systems like yours that doesn't meed minimum system specification ( ;) ), but it also gives access to new techniques that COMBINE the "gain graphics awesomeness" and "gain performance"; that is, with techniques such as clipmaps and others you have additional tools to make things pretty where it matters which would not be possible (or as feasible) in Dx9.

A Dx11-compatible graphics card is, however, fairly cheap, and supporting older standards when even Dx11 is actually not too far away from getting replaced by Dx12 doesn't make sense, not when other components technically put DCS minimum system specification beyond what a typical Dx9-limited system would have anyway.

Thank you for the information. I'll have to get a new PC then.. In like a year.. Now I'm hoping that DCS World 2 will be released as far from now as possible :D

Some features we plan to include in DCS World 2 include:

Clipmap support for new maps

By Microsoft own research documentation, it should have huge benefits!

More detailed tree models with collision for new maps

But this is my wondering...

The Black Sea map will see several benefits of this including better lighting, improved grass, effects and weather.

Does The Black Sea map get the new Tree Collision mesh? As that alone affecting radars (LOS) and other ammunition would make that map totally different to fly!

Hovering in helicopter behind simple treeline sure isn't helping against anything else than missiles (that has proximity fuze, wire or beam raiders) while HEI/AP shells gets trough fine.

But drop behind multiple tree and its much easier to stay in safe :D

Who needs flat desert with some canyon and rocks when there ain't cover for helicopters, or for SAM/Radars to hide behind :D

Black Sea gets benefits inherent to the graphics API switch, but not benefits inherent to new methods afforded by designing a map with a new API in mind, since this would literally require the map to be re-built from scratch. And as most people would agree, that is time probably best spent giving entirely new maps rather than making a slightly prettyer version of an old one. ;)

EDIT: Example:

Bad Company 2 used both Dx9 and Dx10 (or 11? Was a while ago, not sure.)

It used the two codepaths to render the exact same picture, so the latter would not give a prettyer graphics. But it would give better performance. That's what you can _probably_ expect for Black Sea. But taking full advantage of the Dx11 features would require Black Sea to be re-done from nothing, which Is energy (and money) probably better spent giving you new locations to fly and fight in. :)

Agreed but I think they'd eventually have to revamp it completely or make another map free for new players just trying out DCS World. I mean, Georgia looks dated now. Think how it will look in a few years.

Hi dev team, maybe it could be very useful for many users (me as first!) to know if new EDGE DCS World 2.0 + NTTR, to be released hopefully in the next weeks, will require similar hw specs and config to have same performance of the actual DCS world version, or you suggest an hw upgrade.

thank you for your advice :)

EDGE ETA?

I'm super eager to buy a system, solely to play DCS. After a few of my previous posts relating to hardware advice, I'm now more aware of how the EDGE release will potentially effect which system spec I should go for.

Anyone know (roughly) when EDGE is likely to be released? Or have any inclination as to which system configs I should be checking out?

Any advice would be most appreciated. Looking forward to joining in, until then I'll remain super jealous at all you guys enjoying such a great game.

Chris.

Soon is the only answer you'll get right now.

ED will announce anything new, and there hasn't been anything for a while. Best estimates would make me guess it'll be within the next month or two - being optimistic, but as always it'll be subject to them not encountering any snags in the last phases of testing.

I'm sure ED are just as keen to get it out quickly as we are to get our paws on it.
