didn't notice the CAS and strike were missing :)

the trainers i can understand, fun in multiplayer but not the best.

Yes well the poll only supports 10 options and I am personally more interested in Fighters right now. Also, FC3 aircraft are excluded because they get stale a little faster, I've got two (Su-27 and F-15C) and they bore me to death now.

Question #2: I really want to get in on those Cold War servers with a fighter, so F-5E or MiG-21bis? I think Belsimtek is working on an F-4E for the distant future as well (though liscencing cost and classified tech may stop this from happening).

Question #3: Will the Mirage even be worth the money with the F-18 coming out soon?

I'd go with the Harrier.

The ability to carry the Sidearm makes it a great SEAD platform against SHORAD (you don't need to find the Tunguska or Shilka visually to shoot it), and with the new TPOD functionality you can now lase for other platforms, you have the power to get up to altitude quickly (out of MANPAD/AAA range), and with the TPOD on the centerline station you don't have to worry about which direction you're orbiting. The Harrier makes for a capable bird dog in this role. It also has the speed to keep pace with strike packages.

Which brings me to the Viggen. The Viggen is a lot of fun in multiplayer, but the mission has to be centered around strike, not CAS. The Viggen is a fantastic deep strike platform, but it's a fish out of water when given a single waypoint and instructions to plink targets. Unfortunately, many of the multiplayer missions available are based more on CAS and troop reinforcements than deep strike/interdiction, so it makes it tough to find a good scenario for the Viggen online. Additionally, Viggens are toast without good SEAD if the target area has any capable air defenses, so this would necessitate good AI SEAD programming to have the air defenses eliminated before the Viggens got to the target area. Now that the Harrier is out and can keep up with the Viggen (though without the legs the Viggen has), it may be more feasible to have SEAD escort flown by clients.

meh, gazelle, mi-8, huey,.. :D

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

It depends on what you want, Mirage is a Fox1 interceptor with light A-G capabilities so it does not play in the same field as the Hornet.

If you like the plane go for it, it's a very interesting plane and can be deadly even against F-15/Su-27.

Well the server I play on most for modern aircraft is Dynamic Caucasus, which limits all fighters to fox 1 and 2s.

Harrier is... useless :music_whistling::thumbup::megalol:

Last night in the A-10C, I flew over 110nm to the AO, cleared the last units there, cleared all the SAMs and some AAA on the next objective, laser spotted for Harriers and gunned the last target in that AO as well. All this with a 60% fuel start. A harrier can never do that. Yeah, it might have taken me twice the time to get there compared to a harrier, but so what, if all I can do in a harrier is shoot 4 mavericks (2 of them hit a tree xD) and go home, because I am out of fuel (good thing there are FARPs and tankers near by or you would have never made it with a Harrier)

No rage here, however, I have to disagree with the Harrier being useless, especially on say the ACG Coldwar server. Where one A-10C can travel far, loiter for hours and carry a huge payload,

A flight of Harriers can do some serious damage. And then let's throw in the possibility of a JTAC or A-10C buddy lasing targets before the harriers can even get there. Slave TV to target area and CCRP to your hearts content with up to 12 gbus, or use that laser to quickly acquire a target picture for launching your 4 mavericks, or making that daring pass with sidearms attempting to knock out any radar, especially seeing as the SU-25T is the only flyable SEAD aircraft in the game (until we get AGM-88 HARMS with the F/A-18C)

Sure, the Harriers can't loiter nearly as long but, flying solo isn't really a realistic representation of most/if any combat scenarios. 2 to 4 harriers could easily scoot to a target quickly, deploy armament and be back home.. using altitude to conserve fuel if need be.

And again, as far as the Cold War server, the RWR and it's representation on the hud will give you a bee line to any mig-21's who dare to engage their radar emitters in your general direction, and you're able to carry 4 aim-9m's and use vectoring thrust to pull some crazy tight turns and/or fly low speeds to stay behind a target in a dogfight.

Now don't get me wrong. I love the A-10C, but the harrier is probably one of the sweetest birds in the game at the moment unless you are against anything with BVR A/A capability. Pile that on with the fact that the UFC and MFCD's are also preparing us for some of the systems in the upcoming F/A-18C (such as TACAN, AWLS/ILS, STRS, moving map, FLIR/DMT).... I'm personally loving the Harrier. Not to mention the amount of learning required compared between the two platforms.. you could have an understanding of most of the implemented system for the Harrier with just a few videos.. and somewhere within 600 pages of A-10C manauls, there's still quite a bit to learn even years after first getting started with the Pig (for me at least)

Both are great planes.

  • 8 months later...

Question was not. about combat effectiveness. Im a red blooded American. My granfather spent his life working at McDonnell Douglas. So of course F15, F18 or Harrier right? The Viggen is my choice for most fun. Crappy air to air, but at least I can fire a damn Maverick.....and Anti ship....viscious. Its a pilots plane. The Harrier is a blast also, love utilizing a FOB. If I need one to come save me, send the "Eagles". The E will be a blast when it arrives.
