RTX2070 Super v GTX1080ti - DCS and memory

Question: Which is better for DCS and VR, the GTX1080ti or the RTX2070 Super? Will 8gb of video memory be enough?

I am building a budget 9600k system and have only the GPU to source. I could get a 2080ti, but that's not the goal for the this system since the budget for this specific one is 1200 bucks.

Since everyone here know more about DCS and VR I figured this is the best place to ask the question.

Thanks in advance for any useful facts! :joystick: :pilotfly:

You're really talking about a new vs used card . If you are comfortable with the latter , the upcoming Vulkan's additional demands on vram might prove decisive .

9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2

hm...it's the issue of the vram that is giving me pause. I have a spare 1080ti which I can take from an old system. I might just get the 2070 super and test them both on the same system and see what happens :)

When I was getting my “new” gas card the research I did said that the base performance between a 2070s and a 1080ti were similar, the only delta was memory... my observation is that DCS uses shed-loads of memory

I went ahead with the 2070 Super from Newegg. I have the 1080ti as well and will see how the 2070 does. I can swap the 1080ti if I don't like it and kick the 2070 down to where the 1080 was.

The prices for used 1080ti's are stupid. I can't see it so that's why I went with the 2070. New 1080ti's are even more absurd!

This system as it stands is as follows:

200 - i5-9600k at 4.8g

140 - 32gb Corsair mem

45 - Rosewill Magnetar Case

20 - Rosewill Pcie 4 port USB 3 card

120 - Intel 1tb nvme ssd

50 - cooler master dual fan cpu cooler

80 - Asus Z370 prim MB (open box)

110 - EVGA 850w psu

500 - 2070S

~1265 total for the system. The single thread performance for this one is 2913 passmarks. The 5930 system it's replacing only does ~2100 or so.

Temps are ~80c running Intel Burn Test at "Extreme", ~78 if I take off the side cover (soon will have custom laser cutting and engraving with the DSD logo on it)

I think Half-life Alex is driving the 1080ti prices because the game uses about 10gb of VRAM. I'll bet you would not notice the difference. Look forward to your results.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just an update about this: I tried both the 2070Super and 1080ti in the same PC with DCS and feel the 1080ti is better. I can say that the 9600k running at 4.9ghz absolutely trounces the the 5930k.

Another reason to wait for replacing my 1080ti....

I really hope that AMD new offering will be fast and will help bring the prices down as I don’t want to throw 1200 euros on a 3080ti.

Let me add that the 2070 Super is a fabulous video card for the money. At 500 bucks it cannot be beat. The performance is "most of the 1080ti" for a good price - and you get RTX with it.

But since I had the 1080ti - and it has more mem - I decided to use it instead. Though I will add that the real solution is to replace it with a 2080ti, something I will do when I have more time for it.

Now it's really bad time to buy 2080ti as 3080ti is about to hit the market. Either buy 3080ti or buy 2080ti after price drop

Yes...stupid prices :music_whistling:

If I replace my 1080 with a 1080ti, is there anything else recommended I should change. See specs. (Money IS an object)

I have ordered the new Reverb G2.

Thanks,

TWC_SLAG, if your cpu is a K then definitely overclock it. Otherwise you might not see much difference.

I’m now looking at the 2070 Super. I have to get a new MB (died), and am also thinking Why not upgrade the CPU at the same time to i9-9900. Total $1,138. Hopefully keep me and the reverb g2 happy for awhile.

If you want to save money, get the i7 9700K instead.

You don't gain anything by buying the i9 after what I read from people who upgraded.

System specs:

Gigabyte Aorus Master, i7 9700K@std, GTX 1080TI OC, 32 GB 3000 MHz RAM, NVMe M.2 SSD, Oculus Quest VR (2x1600x1440)

Warthog HOTAS w/150mm extension, Slaw pedals, Gametrix Jetseat, TrackIR for monitor use

Better option for around same amount of money is R5 3600 + MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX MB + 2080Super.

This will be much better especially for VR usage where i5 9600 losing any advantage.
